Reinstalling Windows 98

If you have installed an upgrade to your browser (MSIE) since your original installation of Windows 98 it might be necessary to do a little house-keeping before you re-install.

Apparently there is a file called Iemigrat.dll that must be moved out of the way for the installation to work correctly. To set this dll file out of the way so it doesn't mess things up do the following:

  • Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  • In the Named box, type iemigrat.dll, and then click Find Now.
  • Right-click the Iemigrat.dll file, click Rename, type a new file name, and then press ENTER.

Microsoft also recommends a few other helpful steps such as:

  • Disable screen saver programs.
  • Disable antivirus programs.
  • Disable system tools that run automatically.
  • Uninstall any programs that protect or encrypt the Master Boot Record (MBR).
  • Uninstall any programs that protect or encrypt the partition table (for example, uninstall Bootlock included with Symantec Norton Your Eyes Only).
  • Back up data.
