Step 1: Downloading the Installation File

Download means to grab a copy of a file from somewhere on the internet and put it onto your computer. Because you are only grabbing a copy of the file the original file remains on the internet (available for others to use) and you get a copy.

The process of downloading a files requires that the original file be sent to you in little pieces from the orginal website to your computer. The file travels from:

The original website
Through the internet
Through your ISP
Through the phone line
Into your computer
And saved on your harddrive

This whole download process is started by clicking on the hotlink or button for that file on the webpage. You may be using Netscape, Opera, MSIE, or some other brand of browser. They all have unique features and common features.

If you are a seasoned veteran of the download process you know the absolute importance of doing the following:

  • Always download stuff into the same directory such as: "incoming", or "downloads".
  • Keep track of which directory folder you download a file into.
  • Keep track of the name of the file you download.
  • Keep a record of where you download the file from.

If you do any of the above, you will be able to later find the file you downloaded. You may think that only Newbies forget which directory folder they download something into. Don't believe it. Even seasoned computer nerds "lose" download files in the wilderness of several gigabytes of hard-disk space. The expression "Oh, that's where I put that file" comes to mind. Now you can move on to Find the Installation File.
