Urgent ! Dial up not working.
Emmanuel

Hello there,

Can you help me get my dial up working ? I need this problem solved ASAP if possible. I use dial up at work and I have to do plenty of research on the net this week. I've tried everything I could think of but no luck.

Basically it was working just fine in the morning and then when I tried to reconnect in the afternoon it gave me "no dial tone".

So, I did what I could. Checked for a dial tone, replaced the line, checked with my ISP about the dial up number, changed settings like pulse dial vs. tone dial, also checked in device manager and it says the my pcmcia 56k modem is functioning. So, I'm out of ideas.

Can you give me a list of a few causes or solutions to try out ? Using internet explorer 6 if that matters. Thanks so much !

Have you considered the possibility that your modem is no longer functioning and needs to be replaced? Right click on My computer, properties, and click on device manager tab and see what it says under modem. Donna

Thanks for the reply Donna. Yes, I checked device manager and it says the device is working properly. Other suggestions ?

I don't know much about these forums. Do I have to take it into a shop to get fixed ? Is this question too difficult to answer here ?

The modem could be defective even if device manager says it's working properly. A power surge in the phone line can damage it, such as during a thunderstorm. Happened to me. See if the modem will dial out in Hyperterminal. Go to start, programs, acessories, and communications. You should see it there. Type in any local number, and see if it dials out. If the modem dials out, it is OK, and probably has become misconfigured. If it reports no dialtone, and you are sure the phone line is good, then most likely the modem is bad.

Thanks Larry. I tried your suggestion and it wouldn't dial out so I guess I need a new modem. Thanks for the help.
