My co-worker installed hotbar, by accident and we attempted to unistall the program, though the regular Add/Remove Program and it didn't work. It now is not showing in as a program, but it's still on the toolbars. Help what do we do?
Donna

Download Spybot Search and Destroy, or AdAware and make sure you get all the current updates before running a scan. Run the scan and it should get all the hotbar remnants out of your system for you. Donna

after looking at the technical specs for this toolbar, it looks like it might be a activeX controlled toolbar, if that is the case, spybot may not find it, remove it this way,

open your internet.
click on tools, internet options.
Click on settings
click on view objects
click on all the objects in there, and remove them (using delete key)

also check your startup folder to see if there is a startup file refering to hotbar.

also if running 98 open MSCONFIG and click on startup and see if there is a path with a tick in it reffering to the hotbar location. - delete that also.

Remove the main part of the program from add and removes. Both Spybot and AdAware will detect and remove the rest of the hotbar files. Donna

Go to http://www.hotbar.com/help/uninstall.htm

You'll find options there to disable or uninstall Hotbar.

This is lame! I see no optionfs for removing any or all instances of Hotbar. It's all a gimmick. NoAdwear and pPywear all chagre you to untilize their product. HOTBAR should have a free uninstall tool available.

Jennifer, I just had the same experience. I found a method that works for ME and XP applications, and might work for others. I'm not sure. I have ME and there is a restore feature. Mine is accessed from the Start menu as follows: Start / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore. You can then choose a time BEFORE you downloaded the hotbar. Run the program. At the end I found it had renamed the hotbar files and I was afraid they weren't taken off. I checked the programs list, though, through the add/remove programs feature and hotbar was gone. I then tried deleting the renamed files and was successful. I did a further search for hotbar and found nothing. So mine worked. I hope your computer has the restore feature. Good luck. (I was really angry about this unremovable parasite.)

Hi, I used Adaware software to remove hotbar, but something is wrong now with my IE.
When I try to open a new IE windows or I click somewhere on a web page that opens a new one(or with the shift key), it just hang there with the new window empty. What can I do?
Frank

Some of the adware programs modify other programs during installation. They insert "hooks" to work. You IE most likely had some of its dll files modified to provide the hooks for the hotbar to function.

You may need to reinstall IE.
Or, perhaps you'd like to try Firebird from mozilla.org or Opera from opera.com

the easiest way to get rid of hotbar
(or ANY unwanted program)
if you have windows XP
is to go to the control panel
and then add or remove programs.
chose the program you wish to uninstal and your computer does the rest for you!
GOod luck

hotbar
Try the official uninstaller, Windows add/remove programs and system recovery if you have it. If all else fails read http://www.free-web-browsers.com/delete-hotbar.shtml

I removed Hotbar from 2 work computers running Windows 2000 the following way.
Download Lavasoft Adaware 6 free version (www.lavasoftusa.com) Run the software on you computer and it will find all the hotbar files and remove them. There will still be some hotbar cookies and a program file folder called hotbar that can't be deleted because Windows is running it. To get around this I logged off the computer and logged on with a different user. This stopped hotbar from running and I was able to delete the files. (do a search for "hotbar" to find the files. I'm not sure if home users will be able to log on with a different name, but running ad aware stopped hotbar from running.

As an oldbie I spent several hours solvind this problem.
In my ordinary system with XPpro, hotbar did well in hiding and stubournly staying active everytime again, even after a freshly upgraded Adaware 6.0 run for it.
The right uninstall-file is available but well-hidden, meaning you'll find it where you don't look for it.And...here it is for you all, specially brought to you by a Belgian :

If you follow the hotbar "terms of use" link you'll find a link to their official uninstaller buried in the pages of text. Try that.

I have Windows XP and was suddenly knocked off the internet. Now all I have are popup windows and I cannot get back on the internet. I tried to delete hotbar and now the message is accessing msn on the screen but it never does. What can I do?

Hi Lorraine. Found this on Techadvice.com :

Error Message "Explorer caused an invalid page fault on module GWS.DLL @ 016f:03c68071" and most windows programs will not run (like explorer, recycle bin, My computer etc). Caused by a spyware hotbar, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\GWS.DLL, GlobalWebSearch.com

this is another one of the virus type programs that falls under the category of 'spyware/scumware'. They automatically install themselves to your computer when you visit certain sites and they then in the background steal commissions from sites like mine if you ever shop from us.

This one comes from a toolbar called GlobalWebSearch.com

you will need to find and rename the file gws.dll to gws.OLD. But windows wont let you do that so you either have to do it in DOS mode by first booting with a boot disk, or if you think you can stop all the programs from running then you can rename this in windows (click the keys control Alt Delete at the same time, to bring up a list of running programs, then you can click on each program and click the button END TASK to stop each service. Stop all except system and systray.)

Then use the FIND method (Start | Find | ) to search for GWS.dll and when you find it right click on it and rename it to GWS.OLD

There is also a good chance that a file named "SBUS.dll" might be placed in the windows system (or system32 for win2000) folder which activates this virus. Renaming this file could also fix this problem.

Regards, Mark.

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express first.
Click Start --> Run and run regedit

go to location:

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel]

If isn't already there. Make a new key or change the existing one to:

"Homepage"=dword:00000000

If Hotbar was installed without your consent:

Go to Internet Options and then Advanced Tab. Uncheck where it says "Enable third-party browser extensions". Yes perfect definition of Hotbar.

I suggest you change via security settings tab to "prompt" or "disable" for ActiveX in future by clicking "custom". Anywhere it mentions ActiveX disable or prompt check them. Some sites do use them legit though. Most use it to install things like Hotbar.

About the DLLs of Hotbar also being installed not much you can do unless there is a proper uninstall feature. Use a DLL cleaner which looks at DLLs which are actually needed. Either that or you could go through the System folders right clicking each DLL to check its origins ;)

Then Reboot. Hope that helps.

Uninstall
I was wondering if someone could tell me how to uninstall Ad-software. It did something that I really did't want it to do. It stoped a program from working that needs ad serving software files in order to operate. I can't find any information in my computer about it. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!
Mark

01/08/04
Hey Emma. Never heard of Ad-software, but it sounds like you may have contracted malware (spyware, adware...). Do you have SpyBot Search and Destroy? If you don't, get it, it's free (type it up in your favorite search engine), update it and let it find the crap you may have. Good luck. If it applies, watch what you download...
Frank

Or you could avoid the searching around and use the links at the top of this page for anti-spyware software

Got rid of Hotbar
ok, I got rid of Hot bar and EVERTHING that has
to do with it except the folder it all came in.
That folder WILL NOT GO AWAY with any program
and it does not even show up in Regedit.
The folder is empty, nothing in it, but if you
delete the folder IT IS STILL THERE. I guess
it may not be hurting anything but it is anoying the crud out of me!!!

Ad-aware 6.0 + hanging
Hi, I had a previous version of Ad-Aware but half way through the scan it used to hang and Id have to CTRL/DELETE out of it to exit as it was giving me a 'program not responding message'. I upgraded to 6.0 and it worked fine the first scan, but on my second effort (some 2 weeks later) its hanging again. Does anyone have any idea why? Ive update the program, but its still hanging/crashing. Any help appreciated

i am having a similar prob to Daniel: only there are dll files in the folder which are running from Explorer.exe, so it won't delete (says running, if you stop process on Explorer everything stops)

I have deleted everything else (HKey) through Regedit and it doesn't APPEAR anymore but i am worried it will still activate/reinstall having these files still on my pc.

thanks

I have GOT RID OF THE BUGGER!!!

I used Adaware (thanks for that tip!) and it WENT...i couldn't believe it...

HOWEVER, i now don't really know how to get into the quarentine folder to take out stuff I might want to keep (if any) or just make sure it is deleted. I have read the 'manual' and it isn't much help.

Also, does anyone know why the button for ad-watch won't work (flashes a message saying have to download separately, but the link to get the down load doesn't work).

I have emailed Lavasoft, but no response so far.
