I am trying to open a file from a floppy I've found. When I open the floppy with "find" I see the file. When I click on it to open, there comes a window that says: "OPEN WITH" at the top of the window, then a dialog box that asks: "Click on the program you want to use to open the file"__". If the program is not on the list, click other. OK, next is a long list of things to choose... -acrord32 -cmmgr32 -dreamw~1 etc... Well, I chose the first one, Adobe Acrobat Reader. Of course the file did not open and now I am in this terrible "loop" Whenever I try to open the file again, it is now an "Adobe" file?!?!? I click it and Adobe tries to open, over and over again, with the STOP! this is not a .pdf file, adobe cannot open, etc.. How do I change this "Adobe" setting? and get out of this loop??? I have a 3.5" floppy with a bunch of info on it I need to see, but am clueless on how to open it... What other information do you need to help me. -thanks all -Mountain Man

Each file has an extension. That is a part of the name so the computer will remember the file and knows with what program to open. Examples: .txt --> ASCII text-file .doc --> MS Word file .html --> webfile If the computer fails to recognize the file, it will ask you to give the name of the program that is required to view the contents of the file. All you have to again, is click on the file like you did before with the RIGHT-mouse button and choose "Open with" in the menu that appears. Choose "Select program" so the same list will pop-up like in the first place. Make sure the checkbox is marked, so you want have to open that file this way all the time. The computer will remember the extension and the program you choose to open it with. That is all. If you dont know which program you have to use to open the file, take a look at the link below: http://www.camalott.com/~rebma/filex.html Choose the first letter of the extension, and then look it up in the list. You can also post back with the extension, many people here know more of them then the computer ;-PNiels.

Hey Niels, thanks for responding so quickly. Well the problem still exists. I cannot find the filename extension: .cpg Went to the Filex site and could not find... Anyone else out there that might recognize this program filename extension??

"NVALTGEN DOS files contain the NetView alert information that you specified in NVALTGEN. NVALTGEN DOS files have an extension of CPG. The files must be part of the software package of the Open NetView application for which they were created"." Found this when searching the net with google. Guess you are not supposed to open or alter the file yourself unless you know what you are doing. If the floppy you found is very old, then it might be a floppy with old dos-files instead. In those days ppl put their own extension behind a file just to remember it later themselfs. You can try opening the file with notepad to see what comes out. If the text is unreadeble.. then i dont think you ll succeed in finding out what it is.. Good luck again Niels.

Well, after days of trying to work it all out, I am in total agreement. Leave it alone! I cannot seem to open it. fine. To switch gears, what do you think of Linux Mandrake 8.1 I have never been please with 'ol Billy Gates & Co. After much research and interest, I am thinking of a partitioning my hard drive an installing Linux! Any thoughts?

I was trying to open files on a 3.5 to see what they contained. This floppy was disk 1 of a program install. Problem is, when I tried to open them, I said "open with" notepad. Now those files I looked at only open with notepad. My installation errors out. How do I restore those files or find what application they open with?

Sounds like you opened the file with Notepad, then saved the file. This means the file is now corrupted and unusable. I don't believe there is anything you can do. If the program made a backup then that could be renamed to the original. But typically notepad does not make backups. So if you did in fact 'save' after opening the exe file in notepad you now have a broken install.

I am trying to open a floppy that is a .txt file but it will not open. If I try a "quick view" I can read it, however, if I hit "open" it tells me "file size is too large for notepad to open & would I like to use word pad instead". However, wordpad will not open it because an unexpected error occurred while reading it. When I originally put this on the floppy it would open. Can someone help?
