Mouse settings change

I have a Microsoft InteliMouse Explorer 3.0. The back button will just stop working but if I go to control panel and hit default it will work for a while, then without changing a thing it quits. I have to go to control panel again and open all the windows, then hit default and it will work again. This happens allot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Mary

Well Mary I would guess that you have a virus then. Do you have a virus scanner? Do you keep it up to date? Do you have Kazaa?

Yes I have a anti-virus program which is up to date and scans every other day. I do not have a virus. Something else is wrong, was hoping someone here might know.
