I have newdotnet (virus???) installed on my computer via Kaaza. I have removed Kaaza and am unable to remove newdotnet via the add/remove program. Newdotnet tech has told me to try reinstalling the newdotnet and then try uninstalling it again. I don't want this program on my computer and certianly don't want to reinstall it. Has this suggestion worked for anyone else? I am afraid to mess around with the registry.

if you've had troubles with newdotnet uninstall the program (via add remove programs or the registry removal guide new.net will send you.) After that get this procedure from microsoft to wipe out and restore your winsock2:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q241344
Remember, messing with the registry is serious stuff, make sure you export the registry into a backup file on your desktop...if you accidentally delete something you weren't supposed to, then restore your back up registry.
Anyway, this fix worked on a machine "infected" by newdotnet (and further boggled by a bad removal attempt) and should save you from having to reinstall windoze. Peace everyone, and spread the word about trying to stop this kind of foistware.

I found newdotnet on a clients computer this weekend.. only it blocked computer from even booting to windows 98. The newdotnet3_70.dll appears to be a newer version than most sites are reporting. I was able to get computer to boot following removal of the startup command. also found offending programs "savenow", "Cydoor", & "Imesh". None were able to be removed via conventional methods. It appears the imesh is what installed the newdotnet.. however it also appears that the client installed the imesh a year or so ago.. question... is newdotnet able to upgrade itself?? I only found reference on the internet to fixes for version 3.23 .. possible that cydoor or savenow upgraded it. But the newdotnet made reference to the imesh program being the installer.

-- -- Newdotnet fix everyone!! -- --
I got THE fix for you.

Read carefully.

1. -- From another computer :

Go to : www.download.com

Search for : Ad-aware

Download it from that computer and put it on a floppy disk. (this software is free)

2. -- Back on your computer:

FIRST, uninstall "NewdotNet" from ADD/Remove programs (in control panels)
Then, install Ad-aware on your PC:

3. --Copy the AD-aware installer from the floppy to your computer. Install it and run it.
Scan ALL your computer with Ad-aware.

4. --At the end of the scan process, Ad-aware shows all the undesired things you wanna delete from your computer. "Check" anything you want to remove from your computer (I suggest you remove everything listed by Ad-aware) then click "Continue" and go on with the removal of all those files. Close AD-aware and reboot.

Voilà!

Your machine will be "spyware-free" for awhile.

!!! Note that this might prevent Kazaa from opening properly now. You just need to uninstall + reinstall Kazaa (or Morpheus or Grokster depending on wich one you use).

Feel free to run Ad-aware once in awhile as undesired stuff always find a way back to your hard drive just by surfing the web.

NOTE : If for some reason this trick doesnt work, or if it gives you problems with your winsock2 file, please refer this issue to a technician or a friend that knows computers... Don't go any further. Also, don't format and reinstall Windows. It will of course fix the problem, but will take a long time and you will lose everything on your hard drive.

Have a good day!

GOD PLEASE, the next time you install a software, dont install EXTRA stuff they propose you...

I was able to remove most of the ad ware (that I was aware of) but when I tried to delete imesh itself, it wouldn't let me. Now my computer freezes, closes itself, etc. etc. What should I do? Should I reinstall everything or what? Please help. Thanks in advance.

we are thinking that someone have installed a trojan in our system

Fortunatelly , it just occurred due to the installation of DIvX5 that has newdotnet on it

It was installed to my kid to watch The Grinch on DivX cd

Fortunatelly aparently the newdotnet cannot cause problems to the system , it is really just spyware

I learned from experience that uninstalling from Add/Remove is dangerous. I look for the .ddl file that should be deleted but I could find it. I just found a folder named "NewDotNet" in C:\Program Files\NewDotNet with an instructions file and program named "uninstall3_88".
By simple intuition I clicked here, and I think it is OK. Still have the NetDotNet folder now only with the uninstall program but the program is not listed in Add/Remove. I won't touch it. May I have to use it again.

The New.net or otherwise known as in program files as (newdotnet) is the new age ad or spyware that these peer-to-peer giants such as Kazaa and Morpheus are using to make money and using YOUR computer to do it! The newdotnet folder which contains a crucial corrupt file which is alright as long as you DONT DELETE IT like I did, can simply look whilst you are online at what you are searching for and your favourite pages and sends it back to Kazaa central. Kazaa then can sell that information for advertising agents so that they can make money in sectors of the Internet that are favoured by the public. Damn them! But it is our fault for downloading these programs in the first place! It is now getting to the point that we can no longer get stuff for free, without paying an immoral cost. Soon I will get a news section about this SILENT KILLER on my homepage. Just log onto www.xalian.co.uk! Hope that this has given you more information on what we face now in the Digital age of Inter-communications.

hi everyone:) lolol :-o =8->

[just a few tips cause I like to give help here]

1st of all U don't wanna get rid of Kazaa, do U?
no right but U sure want to get rid of SPYWARE
that comes with the original version, so here
is the solution: Get a completely SPYWARE-FREE
version of Kazaa that actually will even help
U block spyware after installation, thats true.
And it also contains some other great tools to!
Please copy/paste/GO the below weblink into IE:
(much special tips, tools & spywareuninstallers)

http://free.hostdepartment.com/kazaalitetk/

Now about NewDotNet (grr!) but actuelly EASY
to get rid of, here are a two tools that might
help U: Ad-aware (it can't remove NewDotNet!!)
but here is a great freewaretool that detects
a lot spyware that Ad-aware do NOT even notice
at all (huh, hmm strange that it won't, I think):
(by the way it works MUCH faster then Ad-aware!)

SpyBot - Search & Destroy (exellent FREEWARE)

Please copy/paste/GO the below weblink into IE:

http://patrick.kolla.de/software/spybotsd/index.html

(To answer "home_mom"s question some messages
above here: Yes I'v used SpyBot on Win98(SE)
WinMe 4.90.3000 and WinXP with NO PROBLEMO
to get rid of NewDotNet and much else garbage).

About NewDotNet messing with internetconnection:
(and to give answer to "Saith"s question/problem)
I'v also often completely lost internetconnection,
both with modem, ISDN or ADSL that I have now,
but U do NOT have to reinstall the OS to fix it.
Well actually updating IE and other applications
may also mess the connectionspeed/settings so:
Download this great freeware "connectiontool":
(I'm not kidding, I'v tryed out several internet-
boosters, even purchased two (damn) but this one
is the best I'v ever tryed out (of 12 different!)
it have a option to reset to like it was before
U started "messing" around different settings:)

"DFÜ-SPEED V 2.2" LINK: http://voodoo.club.de.vu

If U still connect to the internet then
"reinstall" the connection-settings under the
"internet-options" tab in IE. Or once I had
conn.probl. I only disconnected the power
to the ADSL-modem & then powering it again:
WHAM BAM the connection was back in buisness!

(all above is based on My own expirience & not
commercials for the programs! Hope it helps:)

Personal Experience: Like most of you lot, installed Kazaa, it installed lots of other --. Used Adaware 5.0, it removed evrything except NewDotNet. But when Adawaer attempted to remove NewDotnet, it came up with an error and then stated "Winsock connection has been restored" - Hence what i does when you kill New.Net is it kills the Winsock client (i know you all know this, but it might help). Now, I too have the new.net folder with an uninstall.exe file but im too scared to use it due to you ppls experiences. Hence now we have two options - either some boffin be able to restore the winsock connection after uninstalling new.dot OR hack new.net
What a piss take - i cant believe that this compnay uses ppls computer in such a way - ive also been reading articles that state that even if you opt out of having these extra applications installed (where the option is very secretly hidden) they still install the blasted thing - very very upesetting

I tonight had the same problem with a friends Pc. Following a full new windows install the problem still existed. As I had never heared of this program or had any real idea of the computers recent history, I simply ran The Uninstall icon in the Newdotnet folder. This then prompted a re-boot. Following this install regedit and remove anything that calls for newdotnet or new.net or newdot.(anything). Another reboot for good measure and hey presto.

newdotnet seems to have snuck onto my computer probably bundled with another installation or that's what i've read so far. Internet connection sharing, ICS, no longer works. I think this was a little bit sneaky. I haven't traced back to find which installation actually installed newdotnet through the back door but so far it has caused a lot of trouble, more than your average virus.

Brian,

Please visit HTTP://WWW.NEWDOTNET.COM. The information listed there is provided by the developers of the software. The information includes removal instructions. I do not recommend that you use any other 3rd party information and you would be better served directly from the source.

Frank

12/04/02
Dear NewDotNet Support,

It would be wonderful if your website could handle of these uninstall issues. I'm baffled on why your instructions don't seem to work for everyone. I strongly suggest that you have some form of user input (maybe even tech support) so that people can escalate from simple attempts to more troublesome cases. In that way maybe you can find out why some folks are having such a devil of a time removing the program. At which point you can add better instructions to your site.

Another suggestion, maybe put up more pages that say "Remove Newdotnet" and various alternatives to the search phrase so that your pages come up earlier in the search window.

Frank,

We are definitely try to get our pages up higher in the search engines.

The reason why people are having problems uninstalling our software is mainly due to the user themselves. I'm not trying to point fingers. But a lot of our calls and e-mails are generated due the user deleting our folder off of the hard drive either because they were receiving an error and thought that would correct it or they were simply clearing off hard drive space. When you remove our files in this fashion then Add/Remove Programs will not work because the uninstaller is not there.

The best chance of removing our software when it causes errors or loss of network access is to visit http://www.newdotnet.com or contact us directly at support@new.net.

USERS SHOULD NOT USE 3rd PARTY SUPPORT OR REMOVAL METHODS FOR OUR SOFTWARE. THIS CAN LEAD TO CAUSING MORE PROBLEMS THAN SOLUTIONS.

Can we assume then that you have either created or are in the process of creating a simple utility to uninstall the program after someone has deleted the directory?

If you see a repeated problem caused by a common user action you have the choice of either pointing fingers and trying to retrain a world full of users, OR, you can create a retrofit after-the-fact utility to compensate for this goof-up on the part of users.

For myself I believe any program that can not just be deleted from the harddrive is asking for trouble. If any of my programs left such a mess after a simple deletion I would feel compelled to write a utility to clean-up the "post deletion" left-overs.

Since I don't scan your website it is very possible you have such a utility. If you do let us know the link. If you have not written a "post delete" clean-up utilty shame on you.

You admit knowing that many users make this common error. It seems like a simple utility would reduce your support call load and maybe even save your company some money.

Unless you are leaving the mess as a punishment for deleting your program directory, it would be real nice to create this utility.

We have had a separate uninstaller for quite some time and can be downloaded at http://www.newdotnet.com. That is why I supplied this URL in the first place. It has information regarding our software and removal instructions including a link to download our uninstaller.

This comment does not make sense, since ALL applications in one way or another will give adverse effects if removed improperly. If a user deletes folders rather than using Add/Remove Programs, then nothing less than errors and instability can be expected. Our software comes with a separate uninstaller like most applications, but they prove worthless if the user removes the folder that not only contains the software, but the uninstaller as well. We adhere to the same guidelines as any other software application that installs into the WINSOCK and all applications that are removed improperly from the WINSOCK will result in the same problems as our software.

Dear NewDimNet,

You just don't get it. You have been made painfully aware of the fact that many people are having trouble. Rather than pointing out that people are morons for deleting the folder without jumping through the proper uninstall hoops why not create a substitute stand-alone uninstall?

As far as applications which can be deleted without leaving a mess, there are many. Are there any programs that much with Winsock to the extent that you do and can be deleted without proper uninstall, probably not. But when you take it upon yourself to monkey with Winsock you have a higher level of responsibility to the end-user to go that extra mile in support. In this case that extra mile could be supplying an easy to use stand-alone after the fact uninstall.

From the limited perspective of reading the plaintive crys for help in dealing with this problem that a more than a few folks are having a problem with this issue. Why not help out and give people an easier method of resolving the issue?

If you feel it is appropriate to require people have a higher level of expertise to uninstall your program then you should require a higher level of expertise to install it.

It appears that you either have a bad floppy disk or your floppy drive is having problems. Did you follow the instructions at www.newdotnet.com? There is a location for the uninstaller in the procedures.

Frank,

I will not waste my time trying to explain to you that there is already a separate uninstaller and has been for over a year. There are complete and accurate instructions for our removal at www.newdotnet.com. Read up on your information beyond what is posted here or on other sites before you make an uneducated comment about our software or support. We have provided support for our software for 2 years now and really do not need your mute suggestions since every part of your post shows the lack of research. We do not support the other applications that you are obviously not aware of that cause more harm to the winsock such as Common Names and Webhancer. Your discussion only proves that LSP research should be first on your priorities before commenting about winsock functions.

Should anyone need support to correct any problems with our software, either visit www.newdotnet.com or contact us directly at support@new.net or via phone at (818) 385-2000. We only support newdotnet caused problems. We do not support the other applications that Frank is obviously not aware of that cause more harm to the winsock such as Common Names and Webhancer.

Obviously you are making the efforts required to correct the situation. That is a good thing.

I've been aware of your uninstall for quite awhile. But then I'm trained in how to do research. I'm also able to notice what is actually happening with the average John or Jane Doe user. While your uninstall may exist and have existed for quite sometime the number of postings begging for a solution have continued to rise. Conclusion, people were not able to find the solution. Why couldn't they find the solution when it is more or less obvious on your website? Don't know. Fact is they couldn't find it. And they went looking in out of the way, odd-ball bulletin boards for answers. Often functional reality is not the same as literal reality. Just because some "is" does not mean people respond to it's existance. Just because you spend hours and hours posting to your website does not mean people can actually find it there. For some strange unaccountable reason people often look for answers in zillions of places other than where the answer actually is.

Assuming that you are posting similiar messages on other bulletin boards I applaud your efforts in trying to actually get the people to find your solution -- by posting where they seem to be going.

I has boggled me for months why people don't look more on your website. Would that not be the obvious place to look? Apparently not.

So I re-iterate, it's a good thing that you are posting your address and support phone number on websites such as this.

Maybe now the answers will be found in the places people look.

Frank,

p.s. Although I'm sure you believe you posted the same data many times previously, for your information it was not until this final post of yours that you really got the message and invitation for support into your email. By the way, in spite of a few terse words, you've displayed a great deal of restraint in dealing with this thread. I do hope this attitude of yours reflects that of the whole company.

OMFG!

I was trying to clear up some disk space and deleting this program I had never used, seen or manually installed just fvcked up my internet connection at the worst possible moment! #&%"& I can't understand why the program is so horribly designed that deleting it messes up the whole other internet. Sure you newnet fvckers can hide behind the fact that no one ever bothers to read pages and pages of some bs terms of usage and then say it's their own fault. Hopefully you sleep your nights well, you don't seem to be very popular >=O

I don't have any of these problems, I just want to state my opinion on the issue.

If a company creates a program, then it should be designed sush that all its files are contained in the install folder. Under no circumstances should it be dropping files into other program folders, and it shouldn't be making changes to other program's setups. If you don't do things like that then your programs will not cause so many problems when they get corrupted.

But alas, the world if far from perfect, but it is nice to know that there are companies that make software less friendly than windows.

Thank you JHB. We had uninstalled both gator and imesh. And then could not view any online web pages. I went to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q241344 and followed the steps to remove the Winsock registry keys (Very scary). Then I reinstalled TCP/IP to rebuild those registry keys. Everything works fine now.

newdotnet ? = irritating pest !!
TO THE SUPPORT AT NEWDOTNET >>> YOU SUCK !!
You have caused me a week of irritating headaches !! I was never even prompted to install your software and I READ everything when it comes to software liceneses and installs!
I have not been able to surf the net for a solid week and you have caused many a problem with my business !
If I had the power you would be crushed and destroyed ... hopefully someone flames you or blows up the building that hosts you !
You are sooo narrow minded in that you force people to install you -- product ... did you ever realize that there is a WORLD outside AMERICA or wherever it is you are from ??
No wonder the world hates you !!

Now incase you have missed the point on this board from all the messages posted ... here it is
"You --ed up OUR computers and you WILL fix each and every possible corrution you have caused and restore each and every PC you have messed up STEP by PAINFULL STEP ASAP !!"

If you are CERTAIN you have not violated anyone then here is the challenge .. provide us all with the name of each developer on your team so they may be identified by the WORLD ... this will ensure that they never work anywhere else again !! Since we can't really call them developers !! If not then you admit defeat and we assume ou are guilty of violating evryone's right !!

I'm sure plenty will agree with what was posted here !

To: NewDotNet Support and all
Here's what no one is saying.

This software was designed from the ground up to be put on computers without the knowledge of the user and to be very difficult to uninstall. After all, if a message came up that said "Is it OK to install spyware on this computer?" how many people would click the "Yes" button?

Making the software both difficult and dangerous to uninstall insures that as many noobs as possible don't bother to remove it. I can install all of Microsft Office with a single step, and this tiny program has a 3 part uninstall procedure. I'm sorry, but that's a bad joke.

By the way, I don't have it on my computer. I never installed Kaaza or ANY freeware without doing extensive research on the Internet to find out if it contains spyware. I strongly recommend that you folks who got burned this time learn the same thing. THERE IS NOTHING FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET OR ANYPLACE ELSE. Anyone who tells you he's going to give you free software after he paid for all the costs in developing and writing it is pissing in your shoe and telling you it's raining.

i have wrote new.net several times about removing their program. i used add/remove as directed on newdotnet.com. however, after rebooting, not only is the folder, newdotnet, is still there, but spybot and spyweeper still detects that the program is still running.

after failing to uninstall the program, kazaa did not run and prompted me with a message saying an important file is missing and that kazaa must be reinstalled to function properly. i reinstalled kazaa after reading all the licenses carefully and choose not to install anything else, such as newdotnet.

kazaa worked again...BUT spybot and spysweeper detected two newdotnets running. i find this very odd and fustrating. New.net themselves wrote me and said that kazaa was not dependent on new.net. if so, then i feel that new.net is some form of virus that secretly installs itself with other programs and cannot be removed properly without damaging internet connections. of course, this is only my subjective opinion.

for all those that said they removed new.net without any trouble..i challenge you to use spybot to check. even odder is that when spy

there must be a proper way to unistall this malware without detrimental side-effects and a method to install kazaa without it installing itself. i will write to kazaa customer support to see what they have to say. in the mean time,

READ THIS IF YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION IS NOT WORKING!

Okay everybody, I've been reading through these threads and pulling my hair out trying to get my desktop up and running.

I"m gonna take the time to explain what happened, and how I fixed the problem.

I ran Adaware, and it found NewDotNet running on my computer. I didn't realize that by deleting it using adaware, it would cripple my connection. So I deleted it.

Next thing I know my internet connection isn't working, I keep getting a Automatic Private IP Address.

After reading through these threads, I decided to try something and see if it worked. I went to www.newdotnet.com and downloaded the Uninstall file to a disk. Took the disk popped it in my desktop, ran the .exe file and rebooted the comp, and WALLA!, my network connection was back.

I hope this helps. If I can help in any way, feel free to email me.
