Scan Disk is having a hard time running because programs are continuing to make changes to the harddrive in the background.
This means you need to close all windows programs.
Turn off all background programs then try again.

Hi Frank,

I've actually went into the Close Program window, where you CTRL+ALT+Delete, and turned everything off but Explorer and I still received the message.

You may forget to stop background programs such as anti-virus utility programs. Deactivate the background programs and execute ScanDisk again.

Hi Big AL
I thought for Win 98 or me, holding down Control (Ctrl) key would take you to Safe Mode.
Pressing F8 will take you to safe mode in Win95, NT, 2k or XP Operating Systems.

Hi there!
Im having 2 problems with ScanDisk. The first one is that message that it already restarted ten times and that i should close some programs. The second problem, the worse one too, is that when its about 80% done on drive C it just blocks and crashes my computer. It does this every time i run it. What can i do?

Every time I run scandisk, it finds errors and fixes them. Later in the day, the PC slows down and scandisk finds errors and fixes them again. How can I find out what is causing the errors?

Howdy,

I just started having this problem as well. The error is:

ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some programs may enable Scan Disk to finish sooner. Do you want to continue receiving this warning?

I closed all background programs except scandisk and Explorer, deactivated anti virus and still I get the message.

I have also received other messages during this process including that it found a file with a future date on it and that there is a file where two program/processes say that it belongs to them and wants to know if I want to delete the file or make a copy for each of them.

All this becuase I tried to defrag and got a message that there was a problem and that I needed to run scandisk.

Any advice would be appreciated. Since I only get to this thread on occasion, please feel free to email me directly at gmerrill@tiac.net

Thanks,

George

follow these instructions ...press CTRL ALT DEL, click on EXPLORER and the END TASK, when it prompts to shut down click CANCEL.. wait about 5 seconds untill the error comes up END TASK ?? click YES and all background programs will close but windows will remain open, you can now do a good scandisk, without it restarting over and over !!

Hope this helps.

I'm getting same message as Eric above; and I can't defrag because it gives me a message that I need to scan since errors have been picked up as need fixing. I've tried recovery disk, but how do I get the scan disk to totally scan and fix the errors. Help!

If you are having trouble running scandisk because of background programs give "enditall2" a try.

Enditall2 will turn off programs running in background.

To download it, do a search in google.com for "enditall2"

W98 S.E.; error with defrag

Dave,

could be that the scandisk.exe file is corrupt, especially if it won't run in DOS, (no background jobs would be running if you run if before windows starts). you can replace the scandisk.exe file with another copy from a different WIN98se pc - It is normally about 140k, so can easily be emailed, if you like send me the email of your friend and i will send him a working copy of Scandisk from a win98se pc i have here.

Dave, also note that the defrag.exe file can also be copied from another WIN98se pc, i think it is about 250k, so can also be emailed.
