IE tries to spawn a new window and just hangs

When i'm using Internet Explorer to view a web site, and click on a short cut, IE spawns a new window but doesn't actually complete. You can see the new frame, and sometimes the "window" waving, but it never actually connects, and will stay this way indefinintely until manually closed.

Go to Start -Run- type in
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

JayT -- Thanks, but I have ME and don't see (or know) how to get to Run.

Never mind -- I just discovered how to get to run. I typed in regsvr32 Urlmon.dll, and it went successfully, but the same problem is still there! ARRGH!

Chris,
I was hoping it would be simple. :-) Try registering these dlls the same way as you did the Urlmon.dll
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
If not of that works (try restarting your pc, clicking a link), It has been noted that replacing OLEAUT32.dll will work when all else fails. Since Windows ME does not have a SFC, I'm not sure how you would extract it. Maybe you can copy it from a friend's computer. If you do, rename Oleaut32.dll to Oleaut32.old and then place the new file in the same directory.
Of course if all else fails a repair of IE might be attempted. A final and drastic solution is to reinstall Windows. :-(

Thanks again. I was able to successfully run all dll's excetp for Shdocvw.dll. When I run that I get the following error message.
"LoadLibrary("Shdocvw.dll") failed. GetLastError returns 0x00485"
Have done a search for that dll, and the search can't find it.
I have downloaded and re-installed IE, but still no success.

Chris, You said "Have done a search for that dll and the search can't find it. Did you search on your computer using Start-Find -Oleaut32.dll? Or did you search for it on a search engine? If you searched for it on your computer and didn't find it, that is probably your problem. You can download it from here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?oleaut32
It is a zip file. After you unzip it put the Oleaut32.dll file in C/Windows/System.
If you are talking about the Shdocvw.dll file you can download it from here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?shdocvw
Place it in C/Windows/System
Let me know if this works.

Thanks, did search using Start-Find. Finally located file and did the Run thing with great success. Can't say the same for IE -- still same problem.
Just went to the sites you recommended, but can't download files as they require spawning a new window, which is my problem to begin with.
Is there a command to enable/disable the Pop up windows? Maybe this is the simple solution (I hope).
Thanks.

Chris,
Check something for me, k? Go to Start-Find, search for Urlmon.dll. When you find it, right click on it and click on Properties, then check and see what the version number is. If it is anything other than 2.40.4518 that may be the problem. If it is, we can fix it.
Btw. I want to say it is a pleasure to try to help you. So many people ask for help and then never respond.

Boy, thanks for spending all this time!

No problem :-) And I think we have found the problem. Version 3.50.5016.0 works fine for WinXp but can cause this problem with Win98 and WinME. Now, if you had Win98 we could solve this problem by extracting the proper version of oleaut32.dll using System File Checker. But Microsoft in their infinite wisdom left SFC out of WinMe. So, I am going to have to email you the correct version of the file with instructions as to how to rename the old one (since it is in use by Windows it will not permit renaming by usual methods). You will have to rename it in a Command prompt. But it is easily done.
I am assuming that wilborcs@netscape.net is a web-based email account? Otherwise it would take forever to download. The file is 908 kilobites in size. :-)

Yes, you can send it to the e-mail account. Guess by command prompt, you mean via dos?

Jay...hope you are still out there somewhere! I found this exchange while trying to find a fix for this same problem. I checked the version of my oleaut32.dll file and found it to be the incorrect one as you mentioned. I found a site to download the correct file from but unfortunately that required spawning a new pop up window, which I of course cannot do! Was wondering if you would be so kind as to email me the correct file...it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

spyware's messing with your browser- do a google on 'spyware remover' and try one of the free tools to clean up your browsing experience- it may detect backweb- i wouldn't suggest removing backweb which may be used by hp, etc. to automatically apply patches to your computer

Followed the advice given by JayT to Chris viz. using the 2.40.4518 version of oleaut32.dll. It solved the problem not only with internet browsing, but also with CAG.exe. Now, everything works! Thank you so much JayT!!!

WinME error in browseui.dll
When booting WinME, dialog appears that says Explorer has caused and error in browseui.dll. Explorer will now close. Cannot boot into safe mode either. Scanreg /fix and scanreg restore don't help either. How can I fix this?
