Operating system not found

Help Me please. I have the HP Pavillion - about 2 years. Suddenly without warning the computer would not start up. It goes to black screen with message "operating system not found". I had a new harddrive installed but still receive the same error message!! What could be the problem?

i have a compaq presario 1240 laptop with the same problem,so i sure could use some help also

Well, it is usually a bad HD that causes this error. A couple of other possibilities is a bad (not working cpu fan) bad ram or simply an accumulation of dust in your computer. Other suggestions are to check to see if your bios is detecting the HD.
