C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll routine failed.

I'm having a problem with my NvCpl.dll file. My story is that some how, my scanner got unplugged so that something else could use the USB connector. I haven't needed to scan anything in a while so I hadn't bothered trying to hook it back up. Today, I needed to scan something. Couldn't find a USB cable, but had a parallel cable. I hooked that up. Got a "New Hardware Installed" message, put your scanner disk in. So I did. Then... I kept getting the "blue screen of death", and the computer would restart. I finally got it restarted and every thing worked okay for about 5 minutes, until I scanned my image and started to send it to PaintShop Pro. Then my computer got into a cycle of blue screen - restart, blue screen - restart, until I gave up and tried "Safe Mode". At that point, my computer hung up, so I unplugged the parallel cable and turned the computer off, unplugged everything, and went for a cold boot. Everything booted up okay, but I got the error message saying:

ERROR LOADING C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll
A dynamic link library (DLL) initializatin routine failed.

My screen resolution is stuck at 800x600 and my color quality is stuck at 4 bit (only choice). I did a google search and this looks like the most likely place to find an answer.

Everything was working fine until I tried to re-hook my HP ScanJet 4400c scanner up. I run Windows XP Home Edition & KDS XtremeFLAT Monitor.

One last thing. If you're going to tell me to uninstall and/or re-install a driver, please tell me EXACTLY which one, EXACTLY what to do, and EXACTLY where to find what I need because I have no idea what I messed up.

I really need to get this image scanned today, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Email if you prefer.

Thanks,
Alisa

start in safe mode so it loads basic drivers then. uninstall any Nvidia drivers you have then install fresh drivers either from cd or downloaded from Nvidia.com. remember to check out windows update to get any new drivers or patch updates.

The real answer is that you must try to uninstall your VGA driver and than install new once. If that doesn't work, let me know(write the answer on this page),(I have had the same problem). Ivan(13) from Rijeka, Croatia. Iwish you luck!!

In answer to the Alisa's question; as others have stated, the NvCpl.dll is a file related to your display drivers. This file in technical terms is the: "NVIDIA Display Properties Extension". Your best bet is to go to www.nvidia.com and download the updated drivers. There have also been cases where you do not have an Nvidia display card and you still receive this error, this is due to an entry in your registry which needs to be deleted. If you need more detailed info on how to get rid of this error, please e-mail me. This applies to Kris, subba, maurice robinson, Tolga and theresa.

One more thing I need to mention; if you do not have an Nvidia display card, its possible that the files loaded via spyware. You need to run a spyware cleanup program such as Ad-Aware.

You can find the download at:

If you are using XP and the Nvidia driver was updated at some point prior to the error, a fix may be to use the Driver Rollback feature in the Control Panel.

I had the same problem after trying to install a new video capture card on my XP-Pro system - first the blue screen, then partial recovery by using F8 on reboot to choose a previous restore point. Then, operating with the screen in low resolution, due to the NvCpl.dll failure, I was able to fix the problem by using the driver rollback feature in the Control Panel. Finally, I re-updated the driver using Windows Update.

I hope this helps.

Bought a Gainward FX PowerPack! Pro/660 TV 128MB.
After many tries of installing various version of Nvidias drivers I finally got the damn thing to work (I thought)
The desktop & browser settings and colours were excellent, but when I started counterstrike
the textcolours where almost unreadable and textures in game where very strange.
I looked in Nvidia display properties, and I saw that there was a message that NVcpl.dll had encountered problems
during load. the same with Nvwwdi.dll. Following text after this was" Restart computer"

remove all PCI cards and then restart the system and do a system restore to a date where the system was working fine without any errors. also uninstall and reinstall the video drivers and try to boot the system back.

I downloaded the updates from the nVidia website, after i restarted my system i get the errors

"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll the specified module could not be found"
&
"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NVMCTRAY.DLL specified module could not be found"

I tried uninstalling my driver and then reinstalling it, but when I goto install it i get an error message just part-way as the InstallShield Wizard is loading. It says:

"An installation support file could not be installed.
The filename, directory name or volume lable syntax is incorrect"

I havn't a clue what to do, now i don't have any drivers for the card. Can anyone help me?

Email me preferably, or just post here.
Thanks,
Tom

BEFORE UTILIZING THESE INSTRUCTIONS, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE AN NVIDIA VIDEO CARD INSTALLED ON YOUR PC.
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE, DO NOT CONTINUE, PLEASE E-MAIL ME.

The following are instructions on how to remove this or similar errors at startup:

!!! Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NVMCTRAY.DLL !!!

Start by opening the Registry Editor. Remember, deleting things in the registry can be fatal to your PC, do not delete anything other then what is specified in these instructions!!! To open the registry click on the Start Menu, click on Run, type regedit and click OK. The Registry Editor will appear. Drill down to the following folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the Run folder you will be looking for a value that resembles the startup error you are receiving, such as:

NvCplDaemon RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

Right click on it and select Delete. Close the Registry Editor and you’re done.

Best Regards,
Ergo

Lisa

Before you go into your registry editor - I highly recommend that you do a RESTORE before changing anything, this way if you accidently delete anything, you can go back to where you were before you screwed up.

I have the same problem as the initial post was, the Initialization routine failure. I was wondering how to uninstall the Nvidia drivers. I went to my device manager and right clicked to uninstall. I did that for everything that said Nvidia and then reinstalled all the drivers. That didn't work. I am still stuck with crappy resolution and such. I even downloaded the latest drivers and it looks like that doesn't work either. Please help via email or here, it doesn't matter. I just want this thing to work.
