can't check for errors in C drive

When i try to check for errors in C drive using the C drive tools, it says something is writing the disk and because of that it has repeated scanning ten times. I stopped most programs running but still the same problem. How can i isolate the program writing to the disk?

Put your machine in Safe Mode, then perform the scan disk. In Safe mode, all background running programs will be off, including printer drivers, CD writers, ect.
To go into Safe Mode, right after you reboot your machine, usually just after the machines manufacturer's logo, keep hitting F8, and you will see a Windows Start up menu. Arrow down or up to SAFE MODE
