Ok, so I've found that I have the trojan Backdoor.Beasty.F
It's all fine and dandy that I know what I've got and that I have Norton Corporate Edition. Unfortunately, when Norton found it, it immediately quarantined the virus. Which means I can't open any .exe Normally that wouldn't be a problem, because I would just fix this -- using the windows registry. But the big problem is that I can't open a --ing DOS window to change the regedit to a .scr file. Why? Because shell32.pif was renamed or SOMETHING, because Windows cannot find it. So now I can't even use command line to open regedit, stop the trojan so I can use Norton to get rid of the --er.
Suggestions?
btw, I have Norton Corporate 7.6 and Windows XP Professional.

Removal instructions from Norton:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.beasty.html#technicaldetails
However there is a whole family of these. check the name of the suspect virus very very carefully . Search their data base for the removal instructions. Sorry I can't give specific instructions, too many variants.
But this may be a bad one. Not destructive. But it's a rat.
Don't do any online financial transactions, till this one is gone. Some variants drop a keylogger.

vic:
Might be able to fix.
Fellow called kpatz has a vbs script which may help restore exe. .com I'llquote:
"If a virus messed up the shell associations for EXE, COM, REG, etc. this script will repair the associations. It also un-restricts regedit if it was disabled."
Go to this link and read the reply by kpatz: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8802503~mode=flat
Note: it was originally written for sven, but may work. Also this will not remove the virus but if successful will restore .exe . you should then follow abnormals advice above.
