I'm not a newbie, except to this posting board. It's tough to find concerned comments related to Windows and PC problems, but this is one of the best. Thanks for your comments.
I SOLVED THE PROBLEM! Turns out my HIMEM.sys (the hi-memory manager for DOS) was causing the hiccup. I used 'editsys' at the RUN line to 'REM' out the lines (placed a remark - rem in front of all the lines).
As you may or may not know Win95 and above controls allocation of both physical and virtual memory, so the HIMEM manager is bogus and needs to be chucked. Hope this post helps someone else out.
