Rundll error while installing win98

Recently I downloaded a file which caused my computer to constantly display an "explorer has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" message (the file was supposed to be a dvd playing program). I couldn't open any programs. Anyway, I used a startup disk and tried to reinstall windows 98 through DOS. It went fine up until the bit after it restarts your computer the first time, I think it's the finalising plug and play devices and what not. Towards the the end of this process, I got two or three error messages that said that rundll.exe had performed an illegal operation and would be shut down. I also got another one about something to do with a crypt__.dll but the computer restarted before I could read it properly. Anyway, after the restart, the computer seemed to be fine, but anytime I tried to open internet explorer, it crashed. The same thing happened with anything that had anything to do with the internet, liveupdates, I couln't even reinstall explorer from a cd. I'd put the error messages here, but as I couldn't access the computer from home, I'm having to uses another computer and I can't remember what they all said. Can anyone PLEASE help me?? My relevant spec are: PIII 800 processor netware 56k modem 128 megs of ram and I'm running win98 SE (trying anyway)

I love Win98SE. It is reputed to be the most stable of all Windows versions. I would try reformating your harddrive. Since you've had a failed reinstall you might as well go whole hog. My guess is that you have some weirded out dll files which are not being over-written. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a virus involved. So it would be best to go back to the felt and start again. The back news is you lose your data and your installed programs. If you can't afford to lose data or installed programs maybe another option can be found.

I'm begining to believe that win98 included a bug that was shipped with it and was shceduled to break out by the ending of 2001. Why I say so is that my second computer is not connected to the internet yet it started producing this rundll32 error message since november, and this goes on everytime I reinstall win98 and without not even installing an extra program this error message is produced and I can't believe that my pentium 2 400MHz has become old for win98. when it is not even old for win2000.

Rundll error
As my laptop "boots up" I get a 'Rundll - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down' message. If you go to 'details' it says: 'RUNDLL caused a general protection fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL at 000a:0032'. I went to the Microsoft support site, and read a FAQ article which said to edit my System.ini file in notepad to ensure there was a proper line for "run dll". My recollection is there was a "run power dll" or somesuch, so I changed it to what the Microsoft FAQ recommended and saved the file, but it has not fixed the problem. Not only does this box stay up (if you close it, the commputer crashes) but the screen resolution is terrible, and sometimes the computer just crashes anyway. Could someone please email me some instructions to fix this? Thank you very much. jld

Rundll error affecting Explorer
Netscape Explorer has frozen on me and I can no longer get on the web through high speed or dial-up connections. There was an error message stating that the file "rundll" was unstable or unable to operate. There was also an error window that claimed "C/Programs~1." or something had been affected. Is there something I can do for this or do I have to reinstall Windows 98 and again?
Thanks for the help.

Alright since windows.com did not help me i found this site and im hoping for some help :)
When i start my sisters computer, This message pops up saying Explorer: This program has caused an illegal operation and will be shutdown. If the problem persists, please contact the program vendor. I went to windows.com and they said to run it in Safe mode, which i did, But, THEY told me i could point to the start menu, But the same error message pops up so i can't even get into windows to possibly fix the problem. I just uninstalled AOL, and After that, it did not work.
Someone please help this is starting to piss me off ;)

Candace, it is never a good idea to reload an operating system over a virus. Probably your best bet is a complete reformat and reinstallation of windows from scratch. Donna

rundll 32.exe for Win 98
how do i fix this rundll 32.exe on a laptop Windows 98
|
Dan
08/21/03
|
This is gonna be a bit lengthy...
First, a dll file is a dynamic link library. What does this mean? It's a file that can be shared amongst other programs, so that you can save space when installing. Rundll32.exe is one of the most popular dll files, along with the kernel32. These files can be saved in one of 2 places, either in the windows\system folder, or in the folder of the program that is going to use it. So yes, you can have multipe .dll's that are identical, but just stored in different areas. Usually, if a .dll file has been updated in the program, it will install the new .dll file with the program directory. In other cases, if the program calls for a specific .dll file, it will try and find in the directory, and if it's not in there, then it will go to windows\system folder. If it's not in the program directory or the windows\system directory, then you usually get your errors.
There are several ways to fix such errors, some easy, some not so easy. First, read your error message. Read what it says. If it says that a specific program cannot find that .dll file, then reinstall the application. It will then reinstall the .dll file. Also, as one person had mentioned, always a good idea to scan for virus' when you can. Another way, you can run from start/run, this command with the windows cd in the drive... sfc /scannow. That will scan all your system files and install any that are missing or corrupt.
There are several other ways of fixing the various issues, but this may get you started...

I know this email doesn't help anyone but I've wasted more hours on this RUNDLL32 Windows fault than I care to think of. So please count me in on the gang to kill rundll32.exe!
My current challenge started with an error message when Outlook was accessed. An error message would appear stating that there was an error detected and that, oh my golly, how polite, outlook must terminate. Then, based on MS support website I attempted to install a patch that was supposed to cure the problem. No such luck because it says it needs IE Service Pack 6.0. But after downloading and installing the SP I still can't install the patch. So I attempt to uninstall SP 6.0 and find out that I can't access my Home XP ADD/Remove Programs and a box appears telling me that Windows can't access our favorite little friend: RUNDLL.exe. Damn, damn, double-damn!
"Cheers",
John

There is a great little program called isp fix for this problem. Search the net using LSP FIX NET DOT and you should find it.
The search should be LSP FIX - the program is called isp fix.
If you can't find it try searching Foistware LSP fix
If you download it to file - there is a zipped and unzipped version - run it before deleting anything.

net dot - run dll error
You do not need this file!
Please do not delete it before running isp fix as it causes you to lose your internet connection.
Search net for great little program called isp fix - I found it by searching for LSP FIX - New Dot - not net dot as I previously said.
It will delete files that are unneccesary for you.
I still get error message as I DELETED FILES BEFORE RUNNING PROGRAM but it doesn't affect performance.

try checking the RAM or the CPU - couple times i have run into this problem and it has been bad RAM, or an overheated CPU. If you've tried reinstalling windows and still getting this message, it's gotta be the hardware.
also, if you are getting the NEWDOT.NET error, this is SPYWARE. uninstall the program. and/or search for SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY, download it, use it.
