I have a Compaq 400MHz Prosignia with Windows 98, and upon every start-up I get two DOS messages about missing device files, one for Symantec and one for Norton. The message then lists some kind of path way C:Progra~1/xx for the files, which I tried to follow, but no such luck. Neither Symantec or Norton utilities are currently operating on the computer. I can 'hit any key' to get past each message, but I'd love to know how to start up without them. any help is greatly appreciated

Hi Andrew,
Symantec is the name of the company that produces Norton Anti Virus software so the messages are connected. If you do not have Norton Anti Virus you have obviously downloaded some components from somewhere. Suggest you go to start - settings - control panel - add/remove programmes and delete anything related to symantec/norton. If there is nothing try start-find-files or folders and deleted anything found after searching for those two again. Should work.

don't just delete the files, uninstall the anti-virus program, reboot, and then re-install Norton Anti-virus before you get back on the internet.
