Not too long ago, I was getting messages at startup that my original hd was about to fail, so I bought a new maxtor to slave and transfer data to, and when the old one finally died, it was replaced under warranty(with a wdigital).
Now, the maxtor slave is giving cannot write to drive BSOD. A thorough scandisk and defrag will not complete even in safe mode. "Scsndisk found an error and will correct it later" message boxes pop up repeatedly until I hit cancel instead of OK. Defrag tells me errors need to be corrected in scandisk at about 10% or so. Scrolling through the colored squares show a line or 2 of damaged sectors where the leatest data seems to be being written.
I dl'd the powermax utility from maxtor to use as my next step, but didn't find any instructions pertaining to use on a slave drive or on mixed brand setups. Any experience or advice?

If you are running win98, you can use the system file checker utility by going to Start-Run-type in the command 'sfc' but do not use the quotes. Maybe you have a corrupt file, if you ,the sfc will find them and prompt you to restore the files, which are usually in the Windows/Options/Cabs subdirectory. I have no idea if this will help, but when my computer was not behaving properly, I did this, and surprisingly found about 7 corrupted files. Depending on what you are trying to do, maybe you would get an error message - I only got one error message, so the other files must have pertained to applications that I had not been using.
