i downloaded the xp patch to update gta3, but an error comes up. it says: setup has detected that the build version of the system installed does not match the update you are applying to it. you can only install this update
on build 2600 to build2600.
can someone please help me?

is this a message that comes up when you start the computer? or when you start the game?
If only the game then you downloaded the wrong update. I suggest that you restore back to the day before you downloaded the patch and never ever download a 'build' again and only rarely a beta version of anything.
