I had a similar problem a couple of years ago when using an external cd writer. Boiled down to turning off everything in the Task Manager (control-alt-delete) except Systray and Explorer before starting the CD Writer function. This freed up lots of system resources and let me finish the job. Maybe this will help you. Let me know.
