Not really sure if this is a Win problem or not..but here it is:
I have a new Gateway w/WinXP Pro...and using IE 6. Yesterday I tried to access a game I play on pogo.com. When I get to the game and it's loading on their server, it completly reboots my computer! When it comes back up here is the error I get:C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini121601-02.dmp and underneath it there is: C:Docume~\pnarkon\LOCALS~\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml
I have another computer with Win98 and can access it just fine...but if P0G0 wasn't compatiable to XP, I would think it wouldn't shut down my operating system..
Anyway, any help you can provide would be great! thanks
Fred

Sadly XP is a piece of garbage being forced upon us by an uncaring mega-giant.
I'm hanging onto 98SE until I can't find hardware to accept it. After that I'm switching entirely to Linux.

In my opinion XP is a deliberate attempt to stop the proliferation of heritage software, or other old programs. Microsoft believes it's time to buy 100% new stuff. And XP is their start on the process of guaranteeing that old programs become totally obsolete and un-runnable.

My opinion of course. ;-)

Well - thats a bit reactionary. XP is far from perfect, but its based on a kernel that is long tested and very stable (Win NT). Though still not perfectly stable, on a new machine it has no more problems then the Linux and OS X machines in my office, and less than the Win98 machines.

I have same problems on my XP with Hitman. I haven't any idea what it mean. When i was looking for a solution , i came here from yahoo. =) I can help only about shutdown problem. On XP , when a "system failure" occurs , it restarts by default. But you can turn this feature off at " System Properties / Start Up and Recovery / Settings / System Failure / Automatically Restart "

PS: Use my email address for solutions. =)

This error has begun to proliferate like wild fire. Here's how to fix it.

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'. Click on the advanced tab, then the error reporting button. Select the 'Nor Error Reporting' checkbox and turn off the 'But notify me' checkbox. Hit ok. From the system properties window (right click on My Computer and select Properties), stay in the advanced tab, then performance settings, the advanced tab, virtual memory button. Write down your current settings, then select 'no paging file' and press the 'Set' button. Reboot.

Once this is done, make sure the pagefile.sys file doesn't exist in the C:\ directory.

Now just follow the above steps in reverse. Re-enable virtual memory, then error reporting, and reboot. That should fix the problem.

This is only a temporary fix. I have several systems that still have this error pop up. I am still trying to find out what is causing it.

Good luck in finding the answer!

Well, as a network administrator I am pretty shocked at the reaction WinXP is getting, Win2K and WinXP are by far the most advanced and stable operating systems it has been my pleasure to work with - as is mentioned they are not perfect but show me an O/S that is!

According to rumour the sysdata.xml as far as I'm led to believe is a CPU instruction set glitch between mostly AMD Athlon or Duron processors and Windows XP (of course this is just rumour) - no doubt it will be ironed out in the future.

Windows 98 was OK in it's day but it's now just an ageing old dinosaur that is now in the dark as far as modern-day software is concerned.

Aint nuffin perfect? ;-)

Rik,
It's not really possible to separate an operating system from the manufacture. And in the case of Microsoft the problems stem more from corporate policy and attitude than software design.

The whole licensing debockle demonstrates the true interest of the corporation. The fact that they are designing the os to turn itself off periodically and await a reg-number recharge is way off. Whether the system is in use or in discussion the fact that MS is moving in this direction is abusive.

There isn't a person in the world that would tolerate a car manufacturer selling cars that turns themselves off once a year and await a new reg-code. Even if this was a handy-dandy mechanism to guarantee car maintenance or upgrade or reportage or anything. No one would tolerate that level of post-purchase intrusion.

It is only the fact that Microsoft has a near total monopoly on the os market that allows them to even attempt this bullying of the public.

And the fact is that this presumptive attitude runs very deep in the company and in the code.

"Ain't nuffin perfect" is not an excuse for abuse behavior. Just because they do a pretty good job is no excuse. The fact is, the bigger and more successful a corporation the the greater their obligation to behave in a socially responsible fashion.

To return to the initial posting, this has been fixed by Microsoft. According to the guff, the error flag in the paging file was not being reset as it should have been, causing the 'error' to be reported every time the user rebooted. There is no recurring error - just that the initial error kept getting re-reported. And hence why a reinstall of the page file fixed the problem.

There is a 3mb patch now available. Ask your XP system to check for system updates - you'll get a whole lot of security fixes, and this patch on the Microsoft site. In addition, once it's downloaded and installed you will also need to delete the log files from the Windows\Minidump\ folder - it doesn't tell you this as part of the patch.

In the Microsoft Knowledge base, it's Q317277. Here's the url:

I have received a error message which is "out of memeory". I have a lot of memery in the system and very large vertual memory. I had located the error log file, which indicated errors of faulty ieplorer.exc, mscft.dll and spidpt.dll. I had tried to reinstall internet explorer 6 or unintall the internet explorer 6. Nothing can make it work. Can someone teach me what to do to fix the problem.

I tried everything seen here and none of it worked. I decided that I might actually goto P0G0's site and and see what it has to offer for help with this issue. Here is what I found at their page:

Basically they claim that Linksys, NetGear and some SMC NICs have compatibility issues with many of P0G0's games. They said thge only solution that they have found was to use Sun's Java Interpreter.
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

I went there, installed Sun Java. Voila...works like a champ. I don'y buy the part about the NIC causing the problem, but hey, the Sun Java Interpreter solved the problem for me!

Since installing Windows XP Pro I have one problem after another with IE6. My latest is that the ActiveX setting prohibits...on this page. Yes, I know reset your security settings. I have done this. I have manually clicked on run activex controls also. Nothing works and of course I can't uninstall it. Downlaoded an update is impossable as the update recognizes my versions more current. My only option is to download the ever intrusive IE7. Also my windows media player displays an unknown error occured message more often than not when trying to play things from sites like Atom Films. Any suggestions?

I already installed all the critical updates in Windows Update including the Windows XP Hotfix (Q317277) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. After that, i thought the problem with the minidump error and sysdata.xml was already gone because i don't receive the error message "Your system has recovered from a serious error" after the installation of the crirical updates. But after a day or two, i was surprised when i was playing a VCD movie at Windows Media Player, my pc suddenly restarts and there it was again... is the Q317277 fix really solves that error in WIndows XP Professional Version 2002? I don't think so... can somebody please help me with this problem? Please e-mail me if you have time or you can just post a message here regarding the solution, I'll just try to get back at this site next time to check the good news =) I appreciate your help... thanks.

I have experienced the same about once every 2 months since March 2002. (Involuntary reboots which sends the Mini##-01.dmp and sysdata.xml files to Microsoft.). Of course you can adjust these responses by going to /Control Panel/System/Advanced (tab) /Startup and Recovery [Settings] button.

Anyway, I don't mind sending these reports to Microsoft. It gives me the hope (maybe artificial hope) that they will fix it without me having to create the time to do it myself. It's not cost effective.

Side note: I'd like to see a copy of that sysdata.xml file, which seems to disappear before I access it.

The last error report I sent to Microsoft implies that it is an "Error Caused by a Device Driver", but I don't recall any device driver updates being done on my work PC that didn't come directly from Microsoft. I suppose I could check the log of updates for any that were done just prior to March 2002, since Microsoft does track that installation history.

Additional note for "Rik": My PC is a DELL that uses an Intel Pentium 4 CPU, so not all issues of this nature can be rumored as part of an AMD issue.

Of the 3 reports that I have sent to Microsoft, only the first one is at a status of "Researching". Since I have two other similar error report sent for May and July, I figure they may have enough to figure out something, without me spending several weekends doing it myself. If "Researching" turns out to be more than a pacifier, I'll be sure to post the information here.

jon2xxx@hotmail.com since you seem to imply that it might have something to do with Media Player, there was a new security update recently that might address some additional issues. I happened to be using Media Player for just an audio steam (radio) at the time of the last one, and since then have updated it with yesterdays patch. The other months are in question as to if Media Player was even running, but I am sure it's in the dmp file. Does anyone have a interpreter for these dump files?

A few more months and maybe, I'll avoid spending the time finding the issue myself or one of you will send out an automated fix as a virus.

I don't have the time I use to.

Walter

PS- Try to do everything and get nothing done.

Well, I have received this error periodically when I use WinRAR since they did a security fix in March to the Minidump. My error causes the Blue screen of death which states that a memory dump is occuring due to a serious error caused by Win32k.sys attempting to access information already freed from memory.

I think that originally, it worked fine, but left you open over the internet. When they fixed it, the "fix" causes the system to crash if any program attempts to access information because the "fix" reads it as and intrusion.

by the way Thanks Microsoft, for another fine program released months before it should have been.

I experience the same problem every day!!
I've got an AMD Athlon 1000Mhz on an Asus A7V. Win 2k was working perfectly well, but ever since I installed XP it just keeps crashing. I have also installed all the hotfixes available, but still the same "sysdata.xml" problem occurs all the time. If I can't find a solution to this pretty soon, I'll be changing back to win2k.
What did I gain by installing XP anyway?

Any ideas anyone?

Hi all,

I've been getting an error as well with the sysdata.xml file. My PC is running almost all the time, and sometimes while I'm away, after I come back and turn the screen on, there is the WinXP log-in screen (therefore I know the system must have rebooted). When I log in and Windows comes up, there is the error about Windows recovering from a serious error. When I check the error details, it mentions the sysdata.xml file. When I navigate to Microsoft's site regarding the error, it mentions something about it being a driver problem, but nothing specific yet.

Only in one of the previous posts did I see something mentioned about possibly Java being the problem. Maybe we should all see what we have installed for running Java applets. I recently installed a program that needed the Java 2 environment to be installed, so now it is on my system. I forget which program it was that needed it...Hmmm...I think it was Morpheus 2.0? Anyone else running Morpheus? Or maybe another program that installed Java runtime environment?

I think I'm going to try Sun's Java environment as suggested by that user who tried it with success.

Let me know if anyone else finds a fix.

hi, your all probably sick of this one by now :-) but my XP Pro system has crashed from the sysdata.xml - same as has been discussed here. I have been getting the 'blue screen of death' and threw the XP Pro disc in to run a 'repair'. however it doesnt recognise that windows is on the C:/ drive. Am i right in saying that all is lost and a format and 'start again' (along with the necessary tears..) is the only option i have?

I have recently had my XP1700+ crashing out on writes to drives elsewhere on my home network.
Same ol' - same ol' problem with an unspecified device driver error message.
Supressed the reboot as suggested above and this pointed to feand5.sys
I renamed the file in windows/system32/drivers to feand5.sys.old and rebooted.
The system came up looking for a network connection by dialup, so I knew this must have been a driver for my NIC.
Corrupt driver? Reinstalled from floppy. Back to the old nonsense.
Installed old Linksys NIC - worked fine but only 10Mbps.
Got number off noname 10/100 NIC and did web search found drivers for Myson MTD803, and they had different names and later dates.
Installed new drivers and MTD803 card.
All is working as it should now.

I guess some Windows update must have broken the old driver!

Do you guys think of changing the motherboard? I reckon it might be the motherboard problem where the WinXP are not smart enough to handle the resourses. There are only 2 option for you guys to think about which is change the motherboard or stop using Windows XP. That's all i can say. Even though you reformat the PC for thousand time the same problem will still occurs.

Or you might try your luck by email to Microsoft and discuss about this Minidump matter.Lets say, tell them to fix these bugs as soon as possible or else they will get an offical lawyer letter soon. Thounsand of Windows XP user having the same problem here where the Minidump occurs almost everyday in some on the PC. This is a disgrace for such a large company to produce such a lousy software to the market.

Got a buddy who is getting the same message, I believe it has something to do with a video card conflict we're gonna try to fix it this weekend. He's running:

Asus a7v kt133,1Ghz AMD Athlon, 256ram, SB Live, SB Modemblaster (til I upgrade to NIC this weekend) and the part I believe to be the kicker GeForce2 MX400.

Error he's getting is:

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini092402-05.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Home\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

We've tried deleting these files, and changing the virtual memory settings and tho they seemed to work at first they always return in a day. (so don't waste your time with that) and YES he's got the Hotfix installed. May even have to reinstall windows again =-( hate doing that. Any suggestions? What a pain

I have gotten this error while playing games. At first I thought it was a video driver or display issue. i have a NVIDIA. So I looked into that and came up with nadda. My computer won't play dvds now also. So I went into Safe mode to unistall my dvd player and my cdr-w. I get this same error and the immediate shutdown after unistalling my cdr-w out of the device manager. So now I am really confused. wtf. my uneducated guess would be a device issue with XP.
my next step is to reformat and continue to curse windows.

Well looks me like this is associated with graphics cards etc etc...most of the problems seem to be around people playing games etc etc...the problem only started for me when I installed my new graphcis card (Matrox Parhelia). I have tried _every_ fix there is, even though Microsoft says that installing SP1 fixes it...bah to that!!!

I have deleted dirs in my documents/temp blah blah, deleted content in windows/minidump and even done all crap to do with the pagefile...nothing works.

Your problem might not be the Operating System, After all if the environment (pc hardware) the OS is running in is not up to scratch and not in working order, how do we expect it to work.
You problem is most likely something to do with hardware and not software.

I just built my machine three days ago, i have never had this problem ever even with Xp on my old machine, making me think it has to be a hardware issue, new pc is, SOyO Dragron P4X400 Platinum MB, GeForce4 440mx Pny, Ati Tv Tuner VE, 768MB PC 333mhz DDR, Pentium 4 2.53Ghz

I installed XP and all the updates, all the updated drivers and SP1, still have the problem, machine will randomly shut down, seriously thinking bout goin to Win2K, or even to 98 2nd Ed. I can't seem to pinpoint whats wrong with this mem dump. I spent a long time updating my XP home edition trying to see if any of the updates would fix this problem but none of them did. This whole problem just started out of no where. I started my computer early in the day and all was fine, and then later on I turned it on again and ever since I've had this problem. If anyone can help I would be very happy, thanx.

Same problem with the minidump. If you want to see the contents of sysdata.xml just wait for your machine to do it's crash thing and restart. When the error window comes up click on the "view technical information about this error". DO NOT CLOSE THESE WINDOWS. When you close them the file is deleted from the temp directory. While these windows are open, open windows explorer and go to the directory where the minidump file is (temp)and there you will see the file. Highlight the file and select edit or open with a html editor. There you will find no information about your error but you will find ALL! the information about your machine and OS. That's what you will be sending when you supposidly send the error message to MS. I expect that MS will have an update fix as soon as they have gathered all of the information that they want. LOL.

well everybody, guess what? whoever downloads SP1 will have this problem. Alot of people I know just get the small updates, but STAY AWAY from SP1. The security flaws update and all that is over-exaggerated. Microsoft has doctored this file to annoy the crap out of users who have an illegal copy of XP. The sad part is some users who have purchased systems legitly will also get this problem. Once SP1 is installed, check out you modem, the send and receive lights while you are surfing (wait for page to fully load). You'll see info being sent and received randomly, and guess what it's sending info that you have a no-no copy of xp, and the temp directory is created! It gives you a few days to enjoy XP, then the rebooting begins! Try and restore (if you can, sometimes) and you'll see it go away for a bit, and then, rebooting country. Format your hardrives and dont download SP1. That is all you can do, or go out and dish out the cash for a new XP, or contact whoever preinstalled your windows. Good luck...

Well, My whole system crashed with the same minidump thing, and would recover, but now windows won't even load. I called Gateway and their person told me that I had to reinstall windowsXP. Naturally, that didn't work and I have two XP's on my hard drive and I still get that same error message whenever I boot up with the SECOND OS. You all sound so professional.
I'm lost.

hey so i stumbled upon this board while searching for a solution to this sysdata.xml conflict. looks like i'm not the only one. however, in my situation, it crashes when im simply using my computer doing everyday normal computer tasks (sometimes multitasking but not always). it happened enough times before i installed SP1 but now of course it happens more. sometimes it seems as if the crash is timed. i'd say it crashes about every 45 minutes to an hour (sometimes sooner than that but never later). usually what happens is my monitor goes blank and the hard drive light goes off. i originally thought i needed more RAM but i have 224 mb which i think is somewhat sufficient. i have an Athlon 1200 mhz and a WD Caviar 80 gb. and a very out of date Matrox Mystique video card but that shouldnt be the problem cos i updated the drivers.
any help or suggestions would be awesome. thanks.

i just got a new dell computer using pentium 4 about a month ago. it had xp home already installed. i kept getting that error message while playing games at pogo.com, so i upgraded to to the pro version to see if it made any difference. it doesnt. i still get the eror message even though i stopped playing at pogo.com. i've been deleting the minidump files and reseting the pagefile everytime it reboots on its own, but it just keeps happenning. i've downloaded all the updated drivers and still nothing. i have no idea what to do now. will this error message problem damage my computer in any way? please let me know if you have any answers. thanks.

Evenutally, windows will not load anymore and you will get that DOS screen saying that there is a problem or corrupt file (sysdata.xml or whatver that damn file is). I am sick of formatting and re-installing myself. And yes, it happens randomly, usually when you are multitasking, and sometimes, while it just sits there... I dont know what to do, thinking of going down from Professional to Home edition, and using my other PC (win98) for internet so that microsoft can stop messing with my system... 2 pcs and a switch, both with burners in case i need a driver or something for my XP one... Im just gonna wait til someone cracks or fixes that crappy SP1 patch.

Do not expect your OS to work 100% when the hardware is at fault.
Check your hardware first.
Cesar

11/18/02
Fixed the problem. Turns out that one of my memory sticks was faulty. I have 768mb ram, one stick of 512 and a stick of 256 that came w/the system. That 256 was bad. But rumor is the new SP1 patch does stuff to either the CPU, Memory, or sound card to make it faulty. I think it's probably one of those 'MS conspiracy theories'. But oh well, no SP1 for me, just basic XP. Once the release a fixed version, perhaps.

What kind of errors do you get?

I have an error that I have been unable to fix, I am currently using XP-Pro Retail version on a KT7A Abit board with a 1.33GHz Athlon T-Bird, anyhow, one day I was using my comp and shut it down, i had made the mistake of installing Easy CD Creator Platinum Pro 5.0 and so my system wan't able to shutoff on it's own any longer, so have been symply sellecting shut down and then hitting the power button when it came to the windows is shutting down screen, I guess I shut it down to soon the last time cause when I boot it up maybe <30min later it has given me a: D:\windows\sytem32\config\sytem is corrupt or missing" Error, now I have done as much as attempted the repair tool that comes with xp to fix this, but it just won't boot that drive so it will not do the repairs on it, and I have moved arround files from another installation on the same drive in an attempt to replace the system file with a non-corrupt version, but then when it tries to boot the drive it says can't change password, and I have no idea what that means at a boot? but anyhow, it reboots again at that point. has anyone had this issue, if so your advise is welcome, if not then I really hope you never do c it cause it really sux, hehe, I guess this is just another reminder that we must all, always keep our systems backed up at all times to avoid spending extra time on such a commun mistake as this one was.

Thanks,
Elias Z.

Two initial options, both run in command prompt (Start > Run)
1- Run sfc /scannow”
2- Run “msconfig” and choose choose “Diagnostic Startup” to start troubleshooting.
Microsoft is using Roxio’s (Adaptec) burning engine for its WXP Operating System.
It is possible that the 2 versions of Roxio are causing the problem.
Is Easy CD Creator PP5 WinXP Compatible?
Disabling XP’s burning driver before adding any other burning software might be a better idea.

Solution for automatically reboot:

Since we had in our Fab a couple of PC that rebootet automatically during test - I investigated the problem and found a solution
The problem was the Graphiccard driver. In generall operation it works, but every once in a while it makes a reboot.

Detailed plan (what to do):

1.) Find out, what Graphiccard do you have
2.) Download the latest servicepack from your Windows OS
3.) Go to your Graphiccard manufacturer and download the latest and certified drivers.
4.) Uninstall the drivers of the card
5.) Install the new one

Hi Ramius
Am I right to assume the PCs in question run under W2k or XP?
If so, these platforms are set to reboot when encountering System failures.
In your case Graphic Card Driver fault.

Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery.

Yeah, I heard that the reboot thing is the way XP tells you something is not working or causing a fault. Such as bad Soundcard, VideoCard, Memory, even drivers or files that are corrupt. In other words, they did this so that we would say, wow, I hardly ever see the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH like in the old windows days... its the same damn screen, except its a 'reboot' now. Their way of avoiding it.. hehe.. but if it keeps rebooting like crazy, you should see a blue screen eventually...

Hello,

I also get the sysdata.xml error, but only when trying to play games, the game will play for around 1 min and then crash. Did not use to have this problem with my old vodoo 3 2000 card, but got a geforce 4 ti4200 and have the problem (also tried radeon 9000) exact same prob. Thinking it has to do with winxp conflicts or something. However, installed another harddrive and put 2000, and the games work perfectly no errors. So if u know how to do it just have two OS on the computer (preferably on two different HD's).

However, I might just install win98 for the games part and xp for the rest. If anyone knows how to fix this problem on xp please email. I have all the updates for xp so that is not the problem. and i have tried the to do a clean install.

I'm glad I'm not alone with this XP problem!!!

I've had 22 minudump errors since January 2002. First 5 were between January and June but after October 22. I got them 15 in one month! But when I installed new videocard (GF4 MX420) and CPU (Celeron 1.2 Ghz) and updated bios (1006) and all the drivers except SP1, the problem disappeared! So it's definitely a hardware problem. Afterwards I've had 2 errors (December 6. and the other one 15 minutes ago while playing BF1942).

I can't say why the errors started to occur October 22. but it happened twice in 10 minutes at best! I installed SP1 December 19 so it didn't have anything to do with minidumps.

My hardware was:

Asus P3B-F ATX
Intel PIII 500 Mhz
Asus V3800 32MB NVidia Riva TNT2
384 MB

New CPU and motherboard:

Celeron II 1.2 Ghz & PowerLeap PL-iP3/T adapter
Creative GeForce4 MX420

I'm very happy I almost got rid of minidumps. But because they still occur sometimes, it shows there is something wrong with Win XP.
E-mail me if need more help!

David

I have a new computer with Windows XP. It worked fine for a couple of months, but now when I try to open a program--including "My Computer"--I receive an error message with the file name "docume~1\(name~)\LOCALS~\Temp\WER8(or WER7, WER6 etc.).tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt.
The only way I can open these programs is if I go into Safe Mode. I've already been on the phone with the computer manufacturer's technical helper (for an hour), who didn't really have a clue as to what was going on.

Anybody out there who's actually fixed this problem? Or perhaps talked to a Microsoft techie about this? Any info would be much appreciated.

Re: locals\temp\wer\appcompat error message. If anyone has this problem, the following may provide a solution: start the computer in Safe Mode, search for all "delfin" files, then delete each and every single one of the little buggers. Delfin is, I think, just an advertising service--an Internet interloper--associated with Kazaa, but it certainly screws up the functioning of Windows XP.
P.S. I am SO HAPPY I didn't have to hand out more money to Microsoft just to get a bit of help with THEIR product.

Windows XP Home & SP1
XP worked wonderfully well until ?--exact time unknown, very possibly when I installed SP1, had not yet discovered the wonders of downloading mp3s.

First problem I had:
Caused my Excel97 spreadsheets to open with error message stating copy of this file is already open--
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini120702-01.dmp
C:\Documents and Settings\sherry\Local Settings\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

Then this last week had:
my IE-vs6 crash when composing and sending emails on Yahoo--
C:\Documents and Settings\sherry\Local Settings\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

One file mentioned "superbar.dll" but no such file existed on my system.

I researched for suspect "superbar.dll", IE plug-in registered to The LionsPride Enterprises Inc, whose website I can not access. Again relating to those DAMN popup ads or links.

So what FIX or solution really works??

I was able to see a link that appeared on my menu bar below but I am unable to open it. i have check all the settings and they are all correct. I cannot uninstall it becuase It is not in the add or remove programs. When I try to reinstall it it says that I already have a newer version and it stopps there. I tried to configure it, because when I ran a systems check it said that explorer was not configured. That did not work eitber. I am so frustrated.. I cant find anything on the web or anywhere that discusses this problem or how to resolve it.

I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX THE appcompat.txt PROBLEM IN XP. Simply restart your comp then while its loading and displays the xp logo press the restart button once again. Then, after it re-restarts a screen comes up which tells you xp didn;t load properly the last time. THEN select LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION and that's it. This way you trick the computer into thinking somethings wrong (which it really is though the comp doesnt know) and force it to use the last good config. I got the appcompat.txt prob for no reason and I tried this and it worked perfectly. Before with the error my dsl connection slowed to a crawl (2KB/s as opposed to 80KB/s). This trick has fixed many other things before that seemed unfixable within the os.

Believe it or not but with the appcompat.txt I couldn't actively surf the net but I was still connected and the only page i could visit was the set homepage in IE. So, to find this msgboard I had to put every site that I wanted to visit as the hompage and restart IE. Any site that redirected (email) immediately displayed the appcompat error.
ALSO TRY THE TRICK WITH THE SYSDATA.XML PROB
I guess this is not a hardware problem like some people thought...

Re Minidump problem - before anyone jumps to conclusions and replaces hardware, I keep getting the error on my Pentium 4, so I decided to use a Toshiba Tecra instead. I got exactly the same error message as with the Pentium. I am using the same manufacturer supplied XP on both machines - and appears to only appear when using WinMX and downloaded files. I am going to have a play and try and isolate the fault - but it appears to be software based as it seems too much of a coincidence to appear on 2 separate systems.

OK, I recently bought a brand spanking new PC. AMD 2700+, 512mbRAM, ATI RADEON 9500+, 120gb HD. My comp was running fine for a while then I began to start getting these minidunp errors (the ones to do with sysdata.xls). I noticed they only happen when the computer has been idle for a long time and when I am on the internet. I installed sp1 to see if that has helped but I still get the error but less frequently. All I know is I dont have a clue what to do, im really annoyed this is happening to my new computer and I hope my information will help some of you guys pinpoint the problem!! gl

I just formatted my harddrive, installed the chipset drivers, and my onboard nic drivers. I then went to microsh!t site to DL updates. I DL'ed and installed SP1, rebooted, and up came the system has recovered from a serious error. I thought it maybe had something to do with the way the SP1 works, so i payed it no mind. I then installed the rest of the updates, and it did it again. I thought OK, maybe thats how it works. I then installed DX9, and my video card drivers and got the same error each time. All components of my PC are brand new, and my copy of XP Home is purchased from a store. So I say its not hardware related, or a ploy by microsh!t to get the people that have pirated copies to upgrade, but it is something to do with SP1!!

It says that SP1 has conflicts with some video drivers, this could help some of you maybe, although it does not help me bacause I didnt have any video drivers installed yet, only default ones!!

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml<---This is getting really annoying. I play alot of games on my computer, and the damn thing always reboots when I am in the middle of a game. Unfortunatly XP is a piece of crap, and I an too lazy to get a different operating system. Well its the same story as everyone else. My computer restarts, then the box saying" Your computer has recovered from a serious error." pops up. I called the computer manufacturer, they werent helpful at all. They said System recovery will solve the problem. Well I did that, Then 3 days later the damn computer reboots. Is there a solution? I think sending a hateful message to a corporate giant will solve the problem. Bill Gates needs to get a life and make a real operating system. Linux, its ok but not great, and I am not switching to 98, and I'm definately not going to go and get a mac to run OS 10 which I personally consider a piece of -- too. Please respond. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks Cason.

hello
i got the same problem, sysdata.xml and minidump report.

i delete them (lots of time) but always problem, i decide to reinstall XP but problem during install (during install memory management i believe).
i decide to take off one memory, but same, i take off the battery of CMOS, and reinstall,
after Hard disk auto detection.
Now it works, install fews games, and software, and during game, RESTART automatic.

really bored, since few days all is back in good way. and i don't know the final answer.

to finish i think (kazaa or emule) could be guilty, too much trojan and virus, when u downloading a lot, and when the problem came i was in download progress.

well i hope it will be a happy end for u too.

By the sounds of things this 'sysdata.xml' could be caused by a number of things. You could try some of the suggestions and be lucky but most haven't been able to fix this problem.
Best idea would be to install 2000 which is a very stable OS and wait for Microsoft to release a new OS. Problem is will the new OS be any better?

Here's a different glitch that's the main proliferator through my machine. When I attempt to run any of the following, I get an error that halts my system and says a device driver has attempted to corrupt the kernel and must be reloaded from the current stack.

1. Run The Sims Vacation (all previous expansions are also installed).
2. Run SimCity 4.
3. Hit the start button on CommView 3.0 (Packet Sniffer).
4. Install Norton SystemWorks 2003 (about 52% into installation).

I have an AMD Athalon XP 1.5 Ghz processor, 512 Mgs of RAM, a SoundBlaster PCI 16, Geforce 2 with 64 Mgs of V-RAM, and am running Win XP build 2600 with all the latest patches. I'm also having the .dmp and .xml problems, but my story is a little different.

I reformatted and installed WinXP, then did thing in this order, usually resetting in between each one:
-installed network driver
-installed sp1
-installed INF drivers
-updated USB 2.0
-installed DX9

After I did this, I went to the start menu and clicked "Windows Update." The moment I did this, my computer rebooted without warning and gave me that error message after it restarted. The strangest thing is that I went to click on "Windows Update" again, and it DIDN'T WORK! Instead of the normal icon, it gave the "blank" icon (the white icon with the windows logo in the middle)... so now I can't run windows update, but the automatic update still works for some reason. Is MS ever going to do something about this?

Try this one. I have windows xp pro and upon reactivation lost my pagefile.sys. I've tried all the tricks such as resetting it, creating other files and naming them the same, manually entering it in the registry, and trying the same on a second harddrive. Upon reboot all pagefile.sys are deleted unless I set the drives for no pagefiles. I would prefer to fix this rather than a new install.

Got an Asus A7v333, 2400xp cpu, 512mb DDR, and 128mb GEForce4. Loads of fans for cooling so not an overheat problem. Got a 450watt PSU so not a power supply problem .Tried a Hercules Kyro 64mb card (PowerVR chipset) so not a NVidia problem. Running XP pro with SP1. My kids machine is completely different components but with the same problem (SYSDATA.XML etc) Gonna try a reformat and no SP1. Then pray!

Don't know if this will help XP Pro but it did for my XP Home .For all of you with the problem of the error message.Windows\minidump\

Look up Microsoft Knowledge Base Artice Q317277
This is a critical update.

The Q317277 article refers more to the message reappearing everytime you start/resart your pc regardless of crashing or not. Our main problem here is the crashing/locking up that's happening. BTW I've just lowered by bus speed to 100 from 133 and it seems to have sorted it out. Not an ideal solution but ok for now.

Just to keep the XP minidump crash thread going I too have had the same problem for the last two weeks. When I start up my Gateway (which had been running smoothly since I bought it in September) it gets to my Desktop, lingers a minute or two before crashing and starting up again. Then I get the dreaded "serious error" message with the errors recorded as

C:/WINNT\Minidump\Mini063003-07.dmp
C:/DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER16.tmp.dir00/sysdata.xml

I don't play any games on my PC but I had downloaded a Feurio CD burning program because I think it is superior to Roxio. I had to reenable my Roxio player to make CDs for digital photographs but I did that several months ago. Could that be a potential problem?

Minidump and sysdata.xml

I'm in agreement with John Quinn (6/16/03) on this issue. This is definitely an xp problem. I have searched forums endlessly and have noted this problem occuring with different CPU's, graphic/video cards, device drivers versions, etc. I don't play any computer games and I have this crash when using MS Word XP (I'm running XP home edition on a Toshiba Satellite -Pentium 4, ATI-M6P card, 768 Mb RAM). Microsoft gets at least 3 error reports a day from me, and I'm going to keep sending them (like it will help!).

just saw this solution attempt in other forum dont know if it works but i think you all should give it a try:

if the system boots up after that or if the system boots up in safe mode perform the following steps. 1.enter the bios clear the system event log 2 .disable error reporting(if applicable) 3.Resize the Swap File When a serious error occurs, by default the system dumps the system state to the swap file for later retrieval. However, it is possible that the swap file is not properly cleaned up and the system thinks that it is rebooting from a crash. To resolve this, you will need to resize the swap file: Click the Start button. Right click the My Computer menu option, and then click Properties on the context menu that appears. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Settings button in the Performance section. The Performance Options window appears. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Change button in the Virtual Memory section. The Virtual memory window appears. Click Custom Size, and then record the Initial Size and Maximum Size. Set the Initial Size and Maximum Size to the same value as the amount of RAM that is installed in the system. Click Set and then click OK. The system will advise you to restart the computer. Click OK. Click OK at the Performance Options window. The system prompts you to restart the computer. Click Yes. After the system has restarted, repeat the above steps to restore the original Initial Size and Maximum Size values for your swap file. 4.Delete the Minidump Files and the Sysdata.xml File When a serious error occurs, by default the system writes out a miniature memory dump along with an XML description of the system status (which notes the program at fault and other pertinent system data) that can be uploaded to Microsoft. If this data is not correctly closed out, the system may present a Serious Error screen upon boot. To resolve this problem, perform the following steps: Click the Start button. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Explore on the context menu that appears. Browse to the c:\Windows\Minidump directory. Delete everything located in this directory. Browse to the c:\Documents and Settings folder. Search for the following file: sysdata.xml file. Delete all instances (you may find more than one) of this file. Click the Start button, click Turn off the computer, and then click Restart. 5.Disable the Automatically Restart setting This addresses the same class of Serious Errors that resizing the swap file fixes, but it tries to ensure that the errors do not happen beforehand. However, this does not help to rid the persistent Serious Error message after the fact. Click the Start button. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties on the context menu that appears. Click the Advanced tab and then click the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section. Click to remove the check next to Automatically Restart checkbox and then click OK. Click OK. The system will no longer automatically restart after a Serious Error message appears. 6.Disable Memory Dumps This option totally disables memory dumps altogether, which may help fix some persistent Serious Error messages. To disable memory dumps, perform the following steps: Click the Start button Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties on the context menu that appears. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section. In the Write debugging information tab, click to select (none) and then click OK. Click OK. The system will no longer perform a memory dump when it encounters a Serious Error. 7.the system should boot up fine,or else you need to do a repair. if everything does not work try a reinstall of o/s.also run a diags on the system memory.

Hi all,
To clarify on a few things, and share what I've found in a couple of other forums while trying to fix this issue on my machine:

"C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini072703-03.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\yogev1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml" Refers to the files that will be sent to microsoft if you choose to send your error report. To find out the real error, go to your System configuration in the control panel and uncheck the "Restart on Problem" box.

Once you've done this, you'll receive the blue screen, instead of a reboot, and you can get the actual error. In my case, it comes down to the win32k.sys file. In other searches, I've found that it has to do with either bad memory, or memory clock speed set too high if using an off-brand. This causes overheating (not on the processor, so BIOS doesn't show it), and the system reboots.
Some have fixed this by doing the following:

A) Go to www.memtest86.com and download and run the tool provided there. If errors show up replace your ram

B) Slow down your memory clock speed to a step or 2 below your current setting and see if it happens less often. If so, either leave your clock setting low, position a fan on your memory bridge, or purchase name brand memory that is approved by your MOBO manufacturer.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!

Ryan, this is your problem.

F-Secure is issuing an international alert on a new network worm known as
Lovsan or Msblast. This worm spreads to Windows servers and workstations as
MSBLAST.EXE, using the well-known RPC hole. The worm will launch an attack
against windowsupdate.com on 16th of August.

"The IT security industry has been waiting in horror for a new major worm to
appear since the RPC/DCOM hole was found on the 16th of July", says Mikko
Hypponen, Director of Anti-Virus Research at F-Secure. "Now it's here".

First sample of this worm was received to F-Secure Anti-Virus Research Labs
at 20:22 GMT on 11th of August, 2003. The worm spreads in a 6176 byte
executable named MSBLAST.EXE to Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems unless
recent Windows security patches have been applied.

The worm will scan addresses in the internet to locate vulnerable Windows
machines. Once found, it will copy itself over and modify the system so the
worm will be executed every time the machine is started. The worm will keep
on replicating from every infected machine.

The Lovsan worm contains these texts:

I just want to say LOVE YOU SAN!!
billy gates why do you make this possible ? Stop making money and fix your
software!!

"There seems to be clear attack routine in the worm", observes Hypponen. On
the 16th of August the worm will start a distributed denial-of-service attack
against the windowsupdate.com server. "If our initial spreading data is
correct and the worm continues to spread fast, the attack might take down the
whole Windows Update service".

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON THE LOVSAN WORM

Q: What makes this worm special?
A: It spreads using the MS03-026 DCOM/RPC hole, "Buffer Overrun In RPC
Interface" - which is one of the most common security holes in the world
right now.

Q: When was it found?
A: First sample of this worm was received to F-Secure Virus Research Labs at
20:22 GMT on 11th of August, 2003.

Q: How does it spread?
A: If an unprotected machine is connected to the internet, the worm will
access it directly with connections to TCP port 135 and infect it remotely.
The user sees nothing.

Q: Which Windows platforms are vulnerable?
A: At least Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It seems that Windows NT 4 and
Windows 2003 might be affected, but this has not yet been confirmed either
way.

Q: Does Microsoft have a patch to close this hole?
A: Yes, at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

Q: How many machines it could infect?
A: There are potentially tens of millions of machines to infect. For
reference, Slammer worm only had around 100,000 potential SQL servers to
infect and even Code Red had less than 2 million machines IIS web servers.
Then again, most of the workstations with the RPC hole are behind firewalls.

Q: Could it get behind firewalls?
A: In several ways. There might holes in the firewall rules, or people might
make direct unfiltered connections from behind the firewall (with modems or
WLAN). Or somebody might just carry an infected laptop to the company
premises.

Q: Will there be different versions of this worm?
A: Most likely there will be several variants, yes.

Q: What kind of emails does this worm send?
A: None. This is not an email worm. It never sends any emails.

Q: Is this a 'Warhol' worm?
A: No. It has no hitlist and it doesn't spread as fast as for example the
Slammer worm did in February 2003.

Q: Does it do direct damage to infected machines?
A: No. But it does try to take down windowsupdate.com after midnight local
time on 16th of August.

Q: Where is this worm from?
A: We don't know.

Detailed technical description of the worm as well as screenshots are
available in the F-Secure Virus Description Database at
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/msblast.shtml

F-Secure Anti-Virus can detect and stop the Lovsan worm. F-Secure Anti-Virus

Windows XP Problem
Ok, here we go.

I've just bought a new Dell Latitude laptop, with all the stuff--ATI video card, Pentium 4, 30 gig, and the only things I've loaded onto it other than those of the manufactorer are DivX, MS Office, and a few DVD ripping freewares that I have deleted since.

Now, when trying to watch a DVD in either WinDVD or Windows Media Player, I also get the dreaded app.txt message like the others in this forum. The .avi files work perfectly, but the .vob off the DVDs don't work. The perplexing thing is that they DID work before I installed a program for screen capturing, but even after I removed it, the players don't work for DVDs.

Please reply to my post. I am a student who needs her computer running properly before she leaves for college. Any information is very appreciated.

It's really amazing to see lots of people having same problem. For me, I'm just upgrade my PC and got myself this kind of sh*t too. Before, I use
MSI K7N420 mobo + Athlon 1.3 GHz + G-force 4 MX400 + Original XP Pro and everything work just fine. Then after buying new Asus A7V600 + XP2400+,my nightmare started. With SP1, it randomly reboot while giving these mini dump reports. One thing to mention, I can't install Original XP on my new Maxtor DiamondMax (IDE6) hdd. It kept on saying "IRQ-not-less-or-equal" thing or telling to check my display driver, (with BSOD of course) .Therfore, I was forced to install SP1 and end up having this problem. I will try some workarounds poseted here and will let you guys know whether it works with my case or not.

Hello Experts I had the same problem that all you guys have. I see that many people who had this problem owns Hercules prophet graphic card and Asus motherboard just like me. So here are my analyses results. I am sure that error is in hercules radeon card. I have been recording some of my system's parameters and i have found one reason that makes this error and it is graphic card's overheating. My processor's and motherboard's temperatures have been okey during these errors. Also the power supply is enough. But every time when my systems crashes to this error (...minidumb...) i have been playing some 3d game. When i take my computer's cover off so that the graphic card runs in cooler temperature the system works better. However the temperatures of CPU and MB is still the same with or with out the covers. I only hope that someone can tell me another cure to this problem, because i am not sure that i am right about this problem. My system is based on: OS:Windows XP Home (all updates) MB:Asus A7V8X (VIA KT400) PR:AMD ATHLON XP 2400+ GC:Hercules Prophet radeon 9700 MEM:512/333MHz POWER: Switching 360W TRUE

I but better cooler fans to my computer and I noticed that when motherboard (ASUS) temperature is about 33 celsius the sysdata.xml errors are gone forever. Before i had motherboard temperature about 45 celsius. I suppose that the graphic card's temperature went to high and the system crashes after every 10 minutes. Now i have played for 10 hours and everything is working okey. Jihuu.

HEY, I had the same problem for the longest time, and found out a SOLUTION!!

I have an MSI motherboard, and I found somewhere that the problem had to do with an old BIOS version. So, I just downloaded the updated BIOS version, and flashed the motherboard with it.

I think the problem lays in that the new XP updates are not compatible with older BIOS versions.

What a freaking annoying problem, but the solution has so far worked perfectly. Before I could not even go through one day without my computer reseting between 1 and 10 times, but know have been error free for 1 week. YEAH!! Hopefully this helps others, and thanks for everybody's posts who eventually helped me find the solution.

i have win xp and i have a problem when my computer reboots. when i turn it on its fine, but if i restart it, it goes to a blue screen during the window logo is loading, the blue screen would tell me that it has some conflict with something, and i'll have to restart over and over and over again and hope that windows will load.
the funny thing is, when restarting over and over again doesnt help, i'll turn off the computer for a couple of hours, and it would be fine when i turn it back on again. yeah, a couple of hours and no less than that. so if theres a hardware or software conflict, how can turn off/on help me sometimes, and how do i get rid of this problem forever!!!

Hm, I have the same Sysdata.xml error but I know for a fact it's a graphics card driver problem. I have an ATI Radeon 9000 AGP x2/4 Graphics card on a AMD Athlon 2600+/512MB DDR 3200..and if I uninstall my Catalyst Drivers for the card I dont get the error anymore but once I put them back on, boom. They're back. Microsoft error reporting says its a driver problem having to do with the Display Drivers, obviously the graphics card..I have yet to fix it but my only fix so far is not to have Graphics Drivers, heh. I'm trying different drivers and what not, I dunno..just another troubleshooter.

Hi,
I've been having the same error on my PC for months now:

mini*.dmp and sysdata.xml ...etc plus random reboots.

I've tried everything suggested all over the internet, have tried updating all device drivers, tried replacing the graphics card, replaced the Hard Disk, replaced the RAM, have done about a total of 5 fresh installations in winXP. Spent hours changing settings, page file settings, erasing user accounts, creating user accounts... Getting a bit bored of the error now. It's been going on for almost a month and I'm at a loss as to how to diagnose or solve the problem. Everyone suggests something different and it never solves it. I'm an experienced system builder, and have never come across this persistant kind of problem before. I have tried erasing minidump folders, no effect. The CPU and all temps are nominal (around 30^C).. if anyone thinks they know a solution, I'm all ears.

My specs:

AK39N motherboard (shuttle)
Athlon XP2200
512 DDR400 RAM
PNY Verto Deforce4 MX 440 Graphics card
120GB Maxtor HD

As I've said, I've replaced hard disk, graphics card + ram but to no effect, so it seems unlikely to be any of these components. Unless it's some evil combination that's causing the problem. This error occurs on each winXP fresh installation, and also after I update to all hotfixes.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Matt

PS. The RAM, Graphics card, and Hard Drive I replaced were all different makes and models so it seems unlikely to be a specific component incompatibility issue.

I've been experiensing this on a work computer for about a month now, i've checked over the hardware adn found no problems, heres the scenario:

1) It's a p4 3Ghz
2) I originally installed Windows XP Home on thesystem and when i was testing it it all came up clear
3) Was placed on site with no problems
4) a Web-Table was purchased and installed,
5) For the installation the system had to be updated to the Pro version, which was supplied, it was after then that the Minidump Error occured.
6) I updated all the ncessary files, all hardware drivers were updated to the latest version and all the service packs were installed.
7) All the hardware in the machine is brand new and has been prior bench-tested for problems

* I'm now going to try and sus out the problem at the core... I've got some ideas that its overheating of the GPU on the video card or possible the ram itself overheating, but the case itself is a specailly designed heat reducing one... so buggared if i know

For anyone who says it is an XP installation problem, I beg to differ. I've been using this computer almost 2 years without changing my OS and only installing critical updates every few months... and I JUST started getting this error about 2 weeks ago.. (sysdata.xml and mini*.dmp) at every boot-up. I'm trying some things I'm reading here, but I haven't got my hopes up, as it seems many are still having probs...

Thanks for everyone who wants to help!!

Guys/gals, I haven't read all the way up here, but from what I can tell, it could very well just be a graphics driver problem with an ATI card. Found this on Microsoft database :

Hope this helps...

Hello. I’ve got a similar problem. My computer reboots automatically from time to time. Mostly while playing games or so. But mine don’t leave any messages behind. It just suddenly reboots itself and starts windowsXP again as if nothing had happened.

Anyway, I am no expert in this but I got a suggestion from a friend of mine….
- Buy a new Power Supply - he said…. So I did.
And it actually worked.
But now, after some time (two months or so) the damn problem is back.
I don’t know why.
My friend who gave me this tip hasn’t got the problem again. So maybe it’s just me….!?
So why don’t u guys try it? A new Power Supply is not very expensive. And it may work.

AMD Athlon XP2000+
512 DDR RAM
80 GB MAXTOR
ATI RADEON 8500 64 RAM
WINDOWS XP

monitor "on" light flashes green
I've got a dell dimension 4300. The monitor on light flashes green when i plug it into the video card. The monitor and video card work in another system and another monitor does the same thing when plugged into the dell. It appears that the dell isn't performing a post. Can anyone tell me how to test the power supply outputs on this thing? I tried a new motherboard, so i'm pretty much down to the power supply. Thanks!

This error is driving me insane... It can't be hardware as I've been running xp for about 8 months now and now problems at all.

I get the crash and reboot with the error:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini10302-01.dmp
C:\DOCUMENT~1\Your Name\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

However it only occurs when Emule is running, and always about 15 minutes after I launch it.
I've tried so many suggestions but no success.

I don't think it's a fault with emule as other ppl have experienced it with various software etc.. Seems to me that there is something in certain software that is causing the problem with XP..

Although i'm now going back to win2k ... by far the easiest solution.

My Gateway 400vtx laptop spontaneously reboots with a linksys pccard (i believe version 4 - the cisco-linksys version); I have all the latest firmware for the pccard and the AP (access port). Anyway, the same card works fine a Dell insperion notebook, and works fine in another Gateway 450x laptop. Although it may not be the card and some weird combination of hardware that causes XP to "turn itself off, reboot, crash with blue screen, etc." I was thinking about using a NetGear card. Anybody else have a similar problem?

All I have to say is ever since the Megs of RAM showed up, programmers have been lazy and inefficent. So, eat that, and let me back to my Atari 800!!!

I'v read al of the above, butí'v got the same problem since this morning.
(minidump and sysdate.xml)

I'v tried to clear all temp files etc..

But the problem still appears. Microsoft says it's a sounddriver problem, and that i must get the updates.
But i'v got al the update from Creative Labs.
(Soundblaster Live 5.1 digital)

So this is not the solution.

I'm going to try to delete the pagefile mentioned earlier.

If anyone has the same problem, i will return here for anwsers.

Thanks..
