This is my problem, I was inputing a tape to convert to cd and the computer stated that there was enough spcae, however, tape plays, the computer saids not enough memory.
i had run disc cleanup and all files temporary files were gone.
I then started to defrag the drive for about 8 hours and it stayed at 0% complete. i then ran scna disk thourogh and it kept saying a programm is running but i cannot tell which one. What should i do. I run on a windows 98 hp.

press controlalt and press delete key simultaniously to see what processes u have running. Turn off your virus scanner when defragmenting.
Your best bet with maintenance programs is to run them in safe mode. Reboot and tap f8 continously till the option to start in safe mode presents itself.
Note if you have kazaa on your system then well you can try to do these things if that spyware will let you.

I suggest that you run defrag in safe mode (press F5 whilst restarting computer) as explained by ed. However check temp files too, becuase I had the same problem and found two temp files which were over 7.6Gb, I was getting a message 'disk is full' and I couldnt perform defrag. Note that to perform defrag you need at least 5% of free disk space. Disable also screen saver.
Hope you manage.

As stated above, go to the Task Manager (control-alt-delete) and shut down each function except Systray and Explorer to free up system resources. See if this allows you to complete your defrag (after you have cleaned up and deleted all the temp files and the recycle bin (as Lisa suggests). Let me know if this helped you.
