100 percent cpu usage, computer crashes

My have works fine under normal operation but when a program uses 100% cpu usage it crashes after 10 or 30 minutes. I first started to notice when I started playing Age of Mythology. I formatted twice and it didn't help. Any help is appreciated.

I have a Presario 1500T laptop. Its 2.00 Ghz with 256 ram. Its running XP Pro.

sounds like u may have an enormous number of programs running at the same time. Lots of icons next to the clock? Perhaps many programs/processes loading on start up start/run msconfig start up tab. if there is a lot of programs in the start up tab then go to each one of their settings and uncheck load at start up.
