I'm running Windows 98. After the desk top appears, the software for my ISP(Netzero) is automatically activated. How can I stop this?

you may get other advise to run msconfig and uncheck netzero under the startup tab DO NOT DO THAT. Open netzero and find settings or preferences (words to that effect) find if there's a box that sez load at start up or connect when windows starts ( words to that effect).
If you can't find that then press start/programs/windows explorer/windows folder/start menu/programes/startup and there will be a shortcut to netzero there. Delete this and that should solve your problem. If it doesn't, then you missed the setting in option/prefferences

Thanks Ed! Especially for the warning about tampering with the misconfig files. I did get such advice. I'll try what you said. Thank's again. Emory
