Re-install Win98 upgrade from Win95

I upgraded from 95 to 98 using the upgrade disk provided by Microsoft. I've tinkered with it so much that I've created a mess. Can I REINSTALL the Win98 upgrade on top of itself to start over and follow the dictum, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." ???

installing overtop a present OR previous version invariably causes problems. A clean install on a formated drive is the preferred way. The update disc when inserted as part of the installation searches for installed components, if it finds none then it installs the whole thing.

I've got tons of info on c and i'm afraid to clean the drive. I can't find my win95 disk so there wouldn't be anything ther to upgrade. i'
ve got it all backed up but i'm still nervous about wiping c.

If you've got a great big hard drive perhaps you may conciser making a new partition copying win95 cab files over and installing 98 onto that part of the hard drive if it works then you can move things over and then get rid of the original partition content. Don't just go and do this because someone said to try it talk to someone at a computer shop. Without the original 95 disc.
What tinkering did you do maybe we can work this out that way.

Partitioning scares me. My c is 20 gigabytes and my d is 20 gigabytes give or take a few. I downloaded lots of whiz-bang free stuff from the net and then I tinkered with msconfig and everything else I could find. Today I reinstalled Win98 over itself and it didn't do any good since it saw all the files that were there and didn't overwrite them (I guess - I really don't know what it did/does). Everytime I boot it makes a loud squeal and says "one or more of your disk drives could be corrupt" then it runs scandisk before doing anything else. Afterwards it still brings up the desktop and I can do whatever I want there. Everything works, in other words. I'd like to get rid of that squeal and that message. I've got to where I just hit the enter key and bypass scandisk and go straight to the desktop. I've stopped anything from loading automatically except my Trend-Micro antivirus program. After it has loaded I load Zone Alarm and task scheduler.

you should never ever change stuff in msconfig unless troubleshooting other than troubleshooting to find a particular conflict but should be left in tact.
But any way you sed tinkered with. Do you remember all the things you shanged? Free stuf? do you mean optimizers as stuff? What free stuff have you downloaded.
Virus scanner up to date. Do you have spybot search and destroy?
! go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information from the tools menue pick system file checker and lets find the possibly currupted files. If it sez currupt then restore from disc, if it sez changed just choose update, if it sez deleted try and remember deleting it or choose ignore.
good luck.
Before you go to bed run scan disc thoroug scan it'll take forever.

I did everything you suggested plus uninstalled all the freebes. System file checker found lots of stuff, especially c:\windows\system was corrupt. Restored it from the upgrade disk and everything works fine now, no more squeal, no more "one or more disks bad" message. THANKS! I have developed one problem in the process. It says "sound blaster emulator disabled in windows, driver not loaded". I don't know what disabled it or what it has to do with sound, but I don't have any sound now.

GREAT!!
Now right click my computer icon and pick properties, click device manager tab and expand sound and game controlers, highlight soundblaster audio pci select properties/driver and IF YOU HAVE the driver discs select update driver either have it search the disc or go to soundblaster site and find the exact right driver for your sound devise .
there are two entries on my computer soundblaster audio pci and legacy drive I don't know what yours would say but it is drivers that your computer is looking for.
It may be easier for you to go,instead of devise manager to go to the hardware tab and select the audio entries under sound, game controlers and press remove then restart and let windows detect the sound card and request the driver/installation CD that you MUST have.
should be easy fix if there's anything easy with these machines.

Sorry, I've been away from computer a while. I don't have soundblaster audio pci under sound & game controllers, nor do I have anything called Legacy. I went to the hardware tab and there are no audio entries there, just "original configuration". I went to soundblaster but I don't know which driver to download.

I rebooted using DOS in an effort to get the card detected, didn't work. I downloaded Sound Blaster 128pci and although it shows up, still no sound. I uninstalled everything having to do with sound (sound blaster and audio vortex) and when I rebooted it didn't detect a card. So still no sound.

when I wrote pci its just what's written in mine sorry. Though you must have something written about your audio card under those two tabs maybe it's a built in card? and thats different. In that system information under accessories where you went before there is a wealth of info regarding hardware/software configuration and conflicts you should be able to find out what card you got thru there.
There are two things I'd like to recomend
1) PCPITSTOP where for free they'll take your computer for a test drive register, download(very small) and turn the key sit back and they'll make recommendations and comparisons.
2) Belarc advisor a free download that will search out hardware and software installed and windows updates installed and required this is displayed on a webpage so it will need to be connected to internet when you run it.
But don't you have the cd with the drivers on them?

Yep, I have all kinds of drivers on a CD and on my c drive. I'll try one or both of those sites.

Went to both sites, went thru everything, neither one shows any sound problems, detects aureal 8810 whatever. I have to leave this alone for a while. Making me crazy. Thanks for all your help. If you charged a fee you'd be rich and well worth it.
