In msconfig sys config utility, tab win.ini, sounds, what goes in system default= (???)
At present mine says simply system default=, (the comma is there, but nothing else). I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition.

I strongly suspect it is a remnant from the Windows 3.1 days, but kept for backward compatibility. The default settings for system sounds are stored in the registry. I read a couple of years ago that ideally Microsoft would have liked to have seen the win.ini altogether disappear but programmers have continually broken the rules by using win.ini to store settings instead of the registry, including Microsoft's own programmers. So that's why it's still around.
Cheers,
Tony.
