Can I upgrade from Win98 to whatever Windows is offering at this time as their "latest and greatest"?? Should I uninstall Win98 and then install a brand-new "latest and greatest" from scratch? ME? XP? Wait for something new that is in the works? I've heard that I lose DOS when I upgrade. Is that true? I'm an old DOS fan, don't know what I would do without it in copying, finding, deleting, and so on. It's for at-home use whether I upgrade or go by the full package off the shelf. I've got 384mg RAM, hooked up to cable.

Yes, you can upgrade Win98 to either XP Home or XP Pro.
Windows can't be uninstalled. You can upgrade it, meaning that many of win98's files will be replaced with newer WinXP files while many of the system settings and installed programs and documents, etc, will be retained. You could purchase the full install version of XP, and wipe over Win98 with it (if that's what you mean my installing from scratch. Or, you could have a dual boot system where XP and Win98 exist side by side.
You do lose MSDOS, but you still have an emulated MSDOS via the DOS box.
You're an MSDOS fan? No... it ain't possible. ;-)
I recommend you get XP (whatever version) now. It has received very favourable reviews everywhere and most notably for its stability. Besides, the next edition of Windows which is code named Longhorn won't be released until some time in 2005. I'll be getting XP Pro myself within a month or two along with my god like hardware.
Cheers,
Tony.

However, you may want to actually look at the reviews before you blindly accept that myth that they are all positive. There are many folks going back to Win98se from XP. And others are making the leap to Linux.
Why?
Because they are either having trouble with XP or they don't like the hardware headaches or they don't like the licensing agreement.
How do I know this?
Because clients are contacting me begging me to help them go back to 98 from XP. Since it is a HUGE headache to go back they must be motivated by something.
Do yourself a favor and check it out before changing your OS.
In general I ascribe to the old adage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Here's a link to the Windows XP Pro Upgrade advisor. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
It's a 50MB download, but you've got cable.
Finally, I hope you have a reasonbly fast computer; maybe 500MHz and above. XP is quite a resource hogger.
Cheers,
Tony.

Yep, I have 1gig. I'm a little antsy about upgrading after reading Frank's comments. Maybe I'll stick with 98 a little longer. Many thanks to both of you for the insights. (And yes, I like dos for copying from C to D or A, for deleting certain files and folders, making folders [md], etc. It's always there when WinExpl gets tangled up.) You can close this one out, Mr. Moderator.
