this is a new one to me but If it is spyware and some say it ie you should get a program called spybot search and destroy at webattack.com

I have no idea what the hell eanthology is or where it came from, but to keep it from loading into the systray you can click on the start button..then run..then type in msconfig and hit enter. The msconfig program will allow you to choose what you want and what you don't want loading on to the systray at startup. Hope that helps.
Also if you're looking for a spyware program, get Ad-Aware. It works great. I don't know about the spybot.

I've seen eanthology on a friends computer before. it's some kind of spyware. to uninstall it first click start>run then type in regedit, then browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete eanthology from the list. then go to add/remove programs from the control panel and unistall it from the list. this works from all versions of windows. if it doesnt show up in the add/remove list in xp just find the folder in c: or c:\program files and delete it

Please help me.
I have already tried both spybot and ad-ware to unitall eanthology. But there are some still in my pc.
Could you teach me how to unstall eanthology in more detail? what does "Click start>run" mean? Does that mean starting the eanthology progrom?
Frank

05/08/03
If you don't get the part of "Click Start>Run" then you SHOULD NOT be running regedit.

Regedit is a dangerous program. It is dangerous because it is totally powerful and it is not made to be used by newbies.

If you mess up you can mess up your whole computer and have to start over with a new install of Windows.

You could do a backup of the registry before making any changes. But if you don't understand "Click Start>Run" then you won't be able to make a backup or even if you did make a backup you probably will not be able to use the backup if anything goes wrong.

You need to get some help. Or, learn to live with the current problem. It is beyond your current ability. And, when you mess with things best left un-messed you can mess things beyond un-messing.

If you think that sentence is confusing you've since nothing yet. Regedit is very terse and the registry is very cryptic.

Please don't use regedit unless you have at least a 50% chance of not ruining your computer. And based on your questions I give you a 1% chance of not messing things up.

Not your fault. That's just the state of affairs.

erica

To Frank,
Thank you for your kind advice.
I'm not trying eggspee's method in order to avoid messing things up anymore.
I have very poor knowledge about computer, so I am sure that this matter is beyond my ability.
But I really don't know what I should do? I really want to remove eanthology from my pc. Does anyone know the easy way to get rid of it? Or, is there any agency or place I can ask for some advice? There's nobody who can deal with this things around me.
Scrod

Download SpybotS&D. It should remove everything annoying, and it's rather intuitive. Just search 'download spybot' on google and you should find it. After you search and destroy stuff, it will probably ask if it can run on your next startup, to which you should say yes. Then everything should be goody.

Nevermind, I'm dumb and I didn't read all of your post.

I'd also like to get rid of eanthology, but as a novice I don't want to risk messing up! Is there any more info on how to do this safely? Is Scrod's advice sound or not - don't quite understand the relevance of his second message on 05/21/03

Anyone looking for help with eanthology? I've just spent hours doing the clean-up for my sister-in-law. What a mess this little bugger does. First: run Spybot and delete all the crap it finds, then go to add/remove from control panel and remove all eanthology products (Manager last), then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and stop THE "DEFSCANGUI.EXE" process. Then go to Programs directory ( C:\Program files) and delete the eanthology folder ONLY IF IT'S EMPTY. If the folder is still full of .exe and .dll files, your attempt has failed and don't delete the folder, or your registry will be badly damaged. Here's how I finally got it out: stop the "DEFSCANGUI.EXE" process again, go in Explorer to find the C:\Program files, click on the eanthology folder (one click), then browse at the content and locate the "Unins.exe" file (or something close to that spelling...) and double-click it. The uninstaller will run briefly and then ask you if you want to restart to clear shared files ; click YES and you're almost home. Reboot. Run Spybot again, delete more eacceleration crap if found. Check to see if the "DEFSCANGUI.EXE" is still running and if so, stop it. The fun part : do a search (Run>Search) for "*eanth*.*" (without the quotes) and make sure you search the hard drive with sub-folders and hidden files and folders (under "advanced"); delete all files found in this search. Reboot. You're done. If you're lucky. So, best of luck to everyone.

Oopss... I apologize for the small mistake in my post above : to do a search, make that START>Search (not Run>search). It was late. I also forgot to mention that when you finally rid your system of eanthology, you must uninstall and reinstall your antivirus and/or firewall software, as "Stop-Sign" (that's their stupid antivirus) renders them useless. If you have a skilled friend around, you could consider having your registry cleaned (DON'T do this yourself unless qualified); this last step is optional. One last and important thought : IF YOU SEE AN APPEALING AD FOR SOME FREE PROGRAM(ie free virus scan, free popup stopper, free spam remover, etc...) BE CAREFULL!! Do some research first, it could be a horrible mistake not to ask around. Why is eanthology so hard to get rid of? because it is a trojan(not just spyware) that spreads throughout your computer. Safe surfing!
Frank

01/06/04
"If you see an appealing ad.." The best approach to unsolicited advertising is to never, Never, NEVER buy the product.

Just take a vow to never buy anything from a ad sent to you.

If you want something go looking for it. This will help a bunch to prevent trogans, viruses, spyware, etc. Will not guarantee you don't get any but will help.

Legitimate companies tend to not spam.

So if you want a program do a google search on the topic, or go to download.com, or go to TuCows.com, or ask a friend if they have a program that is working well for them.

Just don't buy from ads sent to you. Too risky.

Mark

01/06/04
Frank, I agree with your position. What is so horrible about "Stop-Sign" a.k.a eanthology, is that when you do a "Google" search for, say, a free antivirus or free spyware tools, etc... just look to the right in the ads section ; wouldn't you believe it, "Stop-Sign" makes it to the top of the list every time (try it for fun...). People love and trust "Google" (so do I, to an extent), so their ads must be legit, right? WRONG. Never trust ads in "Google" or anywhere else for that matter. That's how my sister-in-law got assaulted by "Stop-Sign"... I guess "Google" needs to make a few bucks with ads, any ads, and I'm fine with it, because I NEVER look at 'em !!

Be advised spybot search & destroy doesn't remove eanthology nor does spywareguard, back orifice, spyware blaster, spy sweeper, ad-aware 6.0, or system mechanic. I have them all and spyhunter detected it still on my machine with a host of other spyware program that the previous programs were suppose to delete (like My Web Search, Fun Web Products, Shop Nav, Hunt Bar, and Search Ex) use spyhunter but, you have to pay for it (that's the down side).
Mark

01/19/04
Rodan, read my posts above. If you want to remove eanthology, you'll have to spend "quality time" on your machine, not $$ for a program that may just not do the job. If Spyhunter does it for you, great. Post back with a success story so people looking for answers know that it works. My method works, at least it did for me, on a machine so messed up it would hardly fonction anymore. Let's work together on this one...

Re: spyhunter (from enigma software)

Search the reputable anti-spyware sites for opinions. ( Save your money is the consensus)
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,7608885~root=security,1~mode=flat
spywareinfo forums are a hoot when you search for Spyhunter.

What can you say about a company that will"scan your computer for a 190 different types of spyware."

Ad-Aware latest reference file:
Signatures total : 17322

What can you say about a company that uses very, very similar names as a respected antispyware application.
http://www.spybot-search-destroy.com/
The above link is NOT the respected Spybot Search and Destroy. It is Spyhunter. Try other combinations. Misleading? Well.. they never miss the chance to use spydot, search. destroy.

They sure love giving you popups though:
"Our CPM popup program pays up to $1.50 per unique thousand pop-up impressions"
and " "Enigma Software Group also conducts marketing campaigns for a select group of partner companies"

Funny how they seem to find stuff the others don't. But want dollars to remove it.

Stick to ad-aware or spybot search and destroy.
They're the originals. work well, will clean your system, and are free.

Snowman, I'm giving you maximum points for this one!! I'm laughing so hard my liver hurts...

Hadn't done my homework on Spyhunter... but I had a feeling...

Rodan's other point, although pointless because mentionned before, was that neither SpyBot nor Ad-Aware could handle eanthology by themselves... which is true of course, but they do effectively erase close to 99% of all the crap that roams out there, and that's quite amazing for free tools.

Cheers!

I clicked the "free scan" button on the eanthology webpage last week. Now it scans my computer, but it won't fix anything because i don't want to pay. I surced my computer for "eanthology" and i tried to delete it, but it comes back everyday. I bought nortons anitivirus today and would like to install it. I am worried that if i don't completely unistall eanothology that the two will conflict. After I follow the uninstall steps that are given on eanthology's web site, what else will I need to do inorder to get it out of my computer. (I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I am running windows 98)

Jon... bummer... OK. Look up at my posts (01/05 and 01/06) in this thread for removal. It's not easy, but you can do it! Ask a friend if you need help. Should be the same with Win 98. Give it a spin and post back. Good luck.

Jon, Mark:
This may not apply, but maybe he downloaded an Active-x program. (usually the case with all on line scans )

It'll be in downloaded program files

In Internet Explorer/tools/internet options/temporaey internet files/settings/view objects/downloaded program files

Take a look and see if it's in there.
You can delete then.

Mark

01/29/04
I agree Snowman. I suspect it has already spread throughout and installed in Programs directory, registry, etc... Removal of Active-X components could help for sure (that's eanthology's way of getting in).
Mark

01/30/04
Jon, I forgot to mention one thing : please do not install Norton before you are rid of eanthology. You're right, they would "conflict". eanthology will try its best to uninstall or corrupt it, which would mean you'd need to uninstall completely and reinstall. Not worth the hassle.
Jon

First I would like to thank you for all of the helpful info.. I am going to try to unistall enathology on Sunday. I just have a few questions about the advice. 1.) Before i do the steps that you gave on 1/5 should i unistall eanthology from the website. 2.) I don't understand "you must uninstall and reinstall your antivirus and/or firewall software, as "Stop-Sign" (that's their stupid antivirus) renders them useless" Does this mean i need to install nortons as "Stop-Sign?" 3.) I kinda wanted to know if the link given by "user name" given on 11/26 would do all of these for me?
Mark

01/31/04
Hi Jon.

1) The website uninstaller wasn't an issue a few months ago, so I don't know if it's safe or if it's good to use... Try uninstalling directly from your Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) first. I will advise against going to their site. Follow the steps above.

2)I don't know what you mean by :"Does this mean I need to install nortons as "Stop-Sign?"... I'll try to clear this up : eanthology attacks any antivirus and firewall programs it finds on your computer, which means they will not work anymore. Installing Norton while eanthology is still in your machine would cause you problems as well, because eanthology immediately attacks it (Norton does not know how to defend itself against this...). In simple terms : if you had Norton installed, you will need to uninstall it after you're rid of eanthology (easily done from Control Panel - uninstall Norton Antivirus first, then Live Update, then Live Reg), then simply reinstall with the CD. Same thing for software firewall (if you had one). This is to ensure Norton will work correctly.

3)That link was posted by someone I don't know at all. The "user" says he's got a program, but I wouldn't trust it. When people don't leave a first name or pseudonym... Could be legit, but could be lethal as well... Tempting but no thanks. Roll up your sleeves Jon, it's the best way...

Got any more questions? I'll be around.

Good luck on Sunday!!

Mike

regarding #3, i did an independent search to uninstall that stupid program, and happened to find the same thing, out of frustration, on the eacceleration corp. website. voila, it seems to have worked. i shared your misgivings about using the site from the post, but it seems to have worked out directly from eAccel.

sorry for the redundancy.

Mark

Hey Mike. Glad to finally hear some good news on this subject. I'm not sure I understand just how you got rid of it... Did you use the eanthology uninstaller from their website, or the tool suggested by "Username" ? I need caffeine at this point, so my brain is on idle speed... sorry ! Clarification could possibly help others out there.
