I've always had sound. Never a problem. I've been doing lots of upgrades and downloading patches for Win98 2nd Edition, getting rid of error messages. Computer now runs great BUT now I have no sound. Here is the error code: "0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller." Can someone help me troubleshoot this animal? Is there a simple solution? Where did my sound go?

if you went and downloaded WMP V9 your supposed to be able to check your sound card settings. If they say 'default sound card' make sure that windows is identifying your sound card as the default if not, match the WMP settings to what you have identified in device manager. iThe best solution to WMP V9 is to uninstall it and get a previous version at oldversion.com.
hope that helps

I ran a little sound card detecting program that is supposed to show all its values and so on and it said simply "Sound Card not detected." I suppose I have a bad sound card. Is there a place in msconfig or elsewhere that needs a check mark in it, maybe?

Saw no place to check in WMP 9 for sound card settings, unloaded it, went back to old version, still no sound. Downloaded RealOne player, no sound. I have checked all connections. Still getting "sound card not detected".

right click 'my computer' open device manager, look for a yellow question mark this indicates a problem devise. if none found, expand sound video game devises. highlight the audio entries and click properties to see if working properly if not check the disable box. press ok then restart and let windows detect the sound card again.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE the cd that came with the card.

OH and before you do all this make sure your wires are pluged in snugly.Unplug the computer take the cover off the computer BEFORE you touch anything inside the computer, touch the case again to discharge any static electricity, find the card and push it in to ensure good contacts look for any internal wires pluging into the card an seat them further.

What command line detects the sound card? Does it go in config.sys or autoexec.bat? Or both? I don't see Aureal Vortex AU8810 being detected at startup. What's missing?

when you disabled the audio entries in devise manger what happened when you rebooted? Windows should have detected the card

Whatever it did, it didn't get me any sound when I did that. I've done it several times. I've gone completely through windows knowledge base on "no sound" and used Msinfo32.exe, msconfig, scanreg/fix, every little program I can think of, still no sound. I've unloaded everything except Windows Media Player and it says it can't read my music CD - format not supported. I've played CDs there a thousand times.

So to summarise, 1) When you right click 'my computer' icon in the devise manager tab no aurial,or audio pci is listed.
2)you've updated drivers for it recently.
3)The ONLY software having to do with sound or soundcards has been media player and any drivers from the manufactureres website.
4) if a cd won't play after virus scanner turned off thru the cd player located at start/programs/accessories/entertainment/cd player then your soundcard is the problem.
5) I assume that you don't have a virus/trojan, and that you don't use spyware/malware like kazaa cuz if you do then who knows what you may have.
One thing for sure is that windows media player is real buggy.

Make sure the Windows Audio service is set to automatic and running.

I think this is just another bug courtesy of microsoft. The same thing just happened to me. It gives me the same message about me not having sound device, when I can still play mp3's with winamp perfectly fine.
I upgraded to Windows Media Player 9, the latest version, and this crap is still occurring. If any of you find a fix, I would appreciated.
It's not our sound device -- it's some type of bug in Microsoft's system.

Well the other ed is pretty much right when he said matching the default sound card for windows media player, first make sure your sound card drivers are up to date, secondly make sure the mute button in sound and audio devices(located in your control pannel) has not been checked, i have seen this happen alot, if u still have no sound then open windows media player, select tools, then options, select devices, look for speakers then select properties, under audio device to use select default Directsound device, hopefully this should have fixed your problem

I have a variation of the "no sound" problem. I don't have any sound and I can't get the volume control to display. When I remove all of the audio devices and restart, windows (98) recognizes the new hardware and I am able to reload up-to-date drivers. When I try to run an application with sound, I get the error message that the sound device is either being used by another application, missing, etc. I can locate the volume control shortcut in programs, under accessories, entetainment, "volume control". However, when I click on the shortcut, windows very briefly displays the "hour glass" and nothing happens. I've checked the connections for the sound card. Any suggetions before I replace the sound card? Thanks.

Thank GOD. No really look at his post up above. Going into options, then devices, audio device, and changing the device to default sound device SOLVED THE PROBLEM. Thank you so much, God!
On the plus side, all my troubleshooting has left me with a lot of stuff updated. :P
