I noticed on the application tab on the task manager that I have a task, "Project1". Anyone know what this is? If I end the task it just starts right back up.

it's a program maybe from sourceforge.
click start find and type in project1 and find out where it is installed on your system.
If you don't want it to load on startup then in the program's interface check the options or prefferences,or settings (word to that effect) You may also check in c/windows/start/startup and delete any shortcut to it from there.

Thanks,

Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure this one out yet. I can't find any references to a Project1 either so I've just been letting it be. I haven't found any problems that have resulted, but am really curious what it could be. Sorry I can't help!

sorry it didn't work. If you don't have a program called source forge' maybe you used to and this was a remnant left afterwards. If 'find'comes up with nothing then its just either a registry entry or something in winini calling for it.So its likely not using any system resources as its not associated with any installed programs. When you reboot do you notice any command line stating 'bad command'if so this is the culprit and is slowing down albeit minutely the startup process. If you are obsessed with it then click start/run and type msconfig then go to start tab and find project 1 or source forge and uncheck it press OK I dont sugest you uncheck anything else as msconfig is only meant for this type of diognostic effort.

I have the same "project1" application running on my PC. I believe it came in as part of installing IE6.

To sniff it out, I downloaded an evaluation copy of Pest Control, took a look at what processes were running on my machine. Then, using the task manager, killed the "project1" task and repeated the process.

The difference in processes running is related to a file called "securee.exe" found in the windows/system32/inetsrv folder.

To make a long story short, the following URL gives the story on this file.

http://pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/A/Alexa_Adware.asp

I would appreciate comments on this finding. Should I delete the file?

I'm almost positive it came from a program called mIRC. This program just showed up on my computer one day. It's a chat program. Look in your ADD/REMOVE Programs and make sure this isn't on your computer. Even though I eventually could uninstall it, this Project1 is still in my task manager. I've been looking everywhere to find out how to get rid of it. I even have a anti-virus on my computer and it doesn't detect it.

OK...I figured out that Nick has some good info on this. I actually just figured this out a few weeks ago myself, but wanted to post the solution to killing the process and not having it start back up. Basically I right clicked on the Project1 application in Task Manager and selected Go to Process. That showed me it was the secure.exe process. I then searched for that file on my PC and found it and renamed it. After doing that I ended the Project1 task and it never started up again. I have had no ill effects of this not running so I assume that is all that needs to be done.

As an fyi...I do currently have IE6 on my computer (meaning that killing the process doesn't hurt IE6 if it is related) and have in the past had mIRC as well, although that has long since been uninstalled.

I recently noticed that my DSL software wasn't responding when I clicked on it. When I looked at the apps in task manager, I saw not 1 but 2 instances of the 'Project1' running !!

I had recently been infected by blaster and thought it was part of that infection. When I ended both tasks, DSL stuff loads fine..

I believe it was Symantyec's tool I used to remove blaster...

the project1 virus is a virus called w32.Sober@mm
you need a norton anti-virus 2003 to detect this virus. Once i download the removal and carry out the instructions, my pc is clean and project1 never appeared on in my window task manager anymore. TO download the removal and to read the instructions go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sober@mm.html

Project1 is the default name given to a program created in Visual Basic (and possibly other titles in the Microsoft Visual Studio group)

When you bring up the task manager in windows, it displays a 'friendly name' as such. Now this can be annoying when trying to hunt down the program, as it could be called anything.

Your best bet would be to open up msconfig (go to Start > Run, then type 'msconfig' and push Ok). Then click on the Startup tab. This displays all the programs that will start up when you log into windows, scroll down the list and if you're lucky (and here's hoping you are :) you should hopefully find Project1 in the leftmost collumn. If you do then great! 'cause all ya have to do now is look across to the second column and thats where the suspect program will be.
While you're in there you may as well clear the tick box next to it, to prevent it from loading.

Now someone mentioned that it may have something to do with mIRC. Generaly this will not be the case. I've used mirc for quite a number of years now, and have never seen any other applications in the mIRC directory (well except for a small mp3 player i installed in there.)
But it's not impossible for it to be linked with mirc (if you have kids BTW, i'd ask them where mirc came from :).

Now ed mentioned something about the Project1 file to be linked with source forge, and then i read down and basically reffered to source forge as a virus. Source Forge is an online community of hobby to professional programmers who want to freely share their programs, and source code and any ideas with other like minded people.
So having said that, it could be possible for this project1 to have come from a program downloaded from source forge.

So in a nutshell ::
Project1 could be anything (most likely created in Visual Basic, which is a programming tool)

mIRC is a chat client for use on IRC networks, and by itself is not malicious

SourceForge is a great community for programmers, and also for finding tools that you thought never might have existed :)
www.sourceforge.net is the web adress if you want to check it out (no i'm not affiliated with them, i'm just like minded with them heh :)

anyways hope i cleared things up more than i confused 'em, and hope you have luck finding that program :)

Hey, I got the same thing, except it says "Projekt1" instead of "Project1"... Are they the same file? And how do I kill it?!

Please let me know,
