I am running windows xp and I am trying to get a cd to run that is for windows 95. Compatability wizard is no help, and when it says that I have successfully completed installation I try to run it and I get "error- winspool.ddl is missing" Is there a way for me to fix this problem?

Hi Chris

I am assuming you mean winspool.DLL (not ddl).

TRY this:

In explorer, go into the Windows\System folder

Copy winspool.drv. Rename the copy as winspool.dll.

Try the program again. It *might* work (I found a few references to this problem elsewhere and this was a workaround) -- but it might not.

Thanks Lart, but that still did not fix the problem. I don't think that I will be able to use the cd.

try going to webattack.com under missing files. This is a very trustworthy download site and should be of assistance

My Williams-Sonnoma Guide to Good Cooking by Broderbund also needed the winspool.dll file to run under XP. LART's suggested patch (copying .drv file to .dll) worked great. Thanks LART.

winspool.dLl
Thanks Lark

I could not open one of my kids learning games because it was fussing about not being able to find the WINSPOOL.dll. Why, I don't know? You did not have to print anything to play this game.

Anyway, making a copy of the winspool.drv file and renaming it with the .dll extension worked perfectly. My kids are back in business again.

Again, much thanks Lart :-)

We bought our kids a Broderbund game, and I am having the same problem, WINSPOOL.dll not found. I went to the Windows/System folder, clicked on winspool, then copied it to the same folder, then renamed it WINSPOOL.dll, and the application would still not run. Did I do something wrong? I am running Windows xp home version, any help would be apprectiated. thanks

I had the same problem. I found that we need to open tools->Folder Options -> View, and turn off "Hide extentions for known file types" before copying the file. Without this, created file will become WINSPOOL.dll.DRV

I think I got it figured out!! Regarding the Williams Sonoma issue particularly...

I did the LART fix with no luck.

but then... I copied the new winspool dll file to the same folder I installed the program to.
VIOLA!! No more problems!!

if this doesn't work, I made sure I had the "WINSPOOL" in capitals and the ".dll" in lower-case when I renamed the file. This probably shouldn't make a difference... but you never know.

I also left the other copy of winspool.dll that I made in the System folder anyway. I figured it wouldn't hurt anything.

Good Luck!!

Arthur (Skip) Gorhma,

Thank you for your e-mail. None of the suggestions worked for me until I read Yukios message. I was renaming the file "winspool.dll.drv" because my extensions were hidden.

Anyway thank you, my problems are solved.

I had this problem with broderbumd's James Dicovers Maths which I have just purchased for my entire school network. Your suugestions fixed this (thanks!!) but now I have the problem that it will not run unless I set the colours to 256 which XP is incapable of. Any suggestions?

Regarding XP Home addition
this is what worked for me using the above information
select "control panel, tools, folder options, view,(uncheck the box) "hide extensions for known file types",apply,ok.

press "START" (usually lower left corner of screen)
select "c:\ command prompt"
type in "CD.. and press enter" do this as many times as required to get to the "C:\" prompt
ie C:\
type "DIR WINSPOOL.* /S /O /P"
write down all the directory names that "WINSPOOL.DRV" appears

type in "CD C:\(the directory name)" press enter
type "DIR WINSPOOL.*",you should see "WINSPOOL.DRV"
type "COPY WINSPOOL.DRV=WINSPOOL.DLL"
do this for each directory that has "winspool.drv" listed.
when you have completed all directories. type "EXIT". then try to run your program.
I found that I had to make changes in three different directories before I could get the printer to work. I hope that this saves someone that hours that I have spent to fix this problem on my computer.
To remove the changes if it does not work, go to your identified directoy(s)that now have "WINSPOOL.DLL" and "delete WINSPOOL.DLL" then go back and "hide extensions for known file types"

In regards to 256 Colours under XP..
To set this on a program by program basis (so it dynamically changes the screen colour/resolution for that program only) find the *.exe file for the program in explorer or My Computer and right click on it and choose properties. Then on the "Compatibility" tab tick the 640x480 and 256 Colour box. Press OK and off you go..
Sometimes those Broderbund CD's work via an autorun which screws this up, so in these circumstances it is best to create a shortcut on the desktop (or wherever) that goes straight to the programs' exe file.

Thanks for the Winspool fix too...Those darn old games :)

elle

08/14/03
In regards to not finding the winspool.dll..

You probably have system files set to be hidden, which means you will never find them no matter how hard you look. To turn this off (recommend turning back on when done) then go to "My Computer". On the menu (depending on your Win Version) somewhere will be "Folder Options". Windows XP is Tools->Folder Options. Under there on the "View" tab is "Show Hidden Files and Folders" choose this. While there you might as well turn off "Hide extensions for Known file types" as suggested above.

You should now be able to find it.
Remember to change these back when you are done.

I was having the same problem. As many others with the winspool.dll file not found error. I tried LART's fix, and it did not work, but when I went and added what Yukio did to what LART recommended, my daughter's game worked fine.
If you have tried LART's fix and it has not helped your problem, try doing Yukio's suggestion BEFORE doing the renaming that LART suggests. This may help. It did for me.

I'm having the same problem as many above (I'm running ME). I'm missing winspool.drv and winspool.dll, I tried downloading it from driverguide.com and I get a 2 new errors:

"The WINSPOOL.DRV file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtQueryinformationProcess."

And the secon is:

"C:\Program Files\Apprentice\Appr.exe

A Device attatched to the system is not functioning"

Appreciate any help giving, thanks.

ok, i went to http://www.tjande.com/orly.html and downloaded the patch which didn't work, but, i have 2 cd rom drives in my pc, one is a dvd drive and the other is a dvd burner drive (but as you know both will play cd roms) so, after much faffing about, i realised that the problem was that I had the cd rom in the wrong drive, so if you get error messages saying, "please insert cd into drive" try your other one if you have it, problem solved.
