If you want to reset your BIOS to the default settings boot into BIOS settings and look along the bottom of the screen, you should see a prompt to restore the default settings.
If you made NO chages other then the one you are trying to restore now, resetting to the default settings should do it.
Also if you check at Gateway's site they may have information for clearing and resetting the BIOS, usually you can do this by changing the jumper for the bios on the mother board.
Some systems have their battery soldered in so I would be very careful about trying to remove the battery if you don't know if it is or is not soldered in.

Gateway refuse to provide information on how to reset the CMOS without charging $$$, but luckily I was able to figure it out. This is for a Solo 2550, but should work on other models.
With a ruler/screwdriver/..., remove the plastic strip above the function keys - this should just lever off. Underneath are several screws holding in the keyboard. Remove these and lift the keyboard. Look for the reset jumper (there will probably be only one on the mainboard). On my model it was close to being directly underneath the space bar. You might need to remove the CPU heatsink to get to the jumper. The battery itself is soldered in, so don't try to get to it. Remove the jumper, wait a few minutes to be safe, and replace. If you have removed the heatsink, make sure it is screwed back on tightly. You might want to scrape the thermal goop off first and put a fresh drop on. Careful to make sure that the keyboard cord has not come loose from the mainboard before you go to screw it back together.
Hope this is of help.
