Amy I have seen your thread. Did you get an answer? I have exactly the same problem, and a few other little glitches like norton will not carry out live update. I wondered whether it was a trojan (horror).

At the startup "Save" has an error with it, also my Msn connection gets an error with save.
My Cd Copier gets a problem with RPCRT4.DLL as well. I dont know whats wrong, ive gone through all my system recovery files to look for a replace of this file but had no luck.

i have cured my problem. as well as failing to install the critical windows update, another thing that was happening was the "Find on this page..." function in ie6 wasn't working properly either. it wouldn't search and came up with an Stub error 35. Anyway i found this site which talked of OS problems and pointed me to the fix below it, and it worked. Good luck http://www.dvpc.org/blue/2002may/dvpc2002may_page0008.html

mcrepair.exe replaced some of the dll files but did not solve my problem for the rpcrt4.dll.
Anyone find another way to solve this problem?

More Kudos for Ben. My problem was the same as amys. The only info I found was related to McAfee personal firewall. I also did the schannel.dll replacement to no avail. Ben fixed worked for me.

Like Amy and the others I had the same problem with the rpcrt4.dll error, and not being able to "Find on this page", and the Windows Update link at the top right hand corner of my w98 active desktop not working, and some links not working when clicked on. I got blank "no page to display" error. All were corrected when I went to
http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcrepair.exe
like Ben said.
I downloaded the repair. The first time I tried to install, it didn't work because it popped up a dialog box that said the files you have are newer than the ones you want to install, do you want to replace? and I clicked "No to all". It didn't work after reboot. So I tried again, this time when it asked to replace the newer files with older ones I said yes, and every problem was solved after reboot. Thanks Ben

For the people who keep posting "I have same error, please give me solution" -- LOOK above! Read the thread! The answer is right THERE above you! Download the MCrepair.exe file that is linked above.
I'm working on a clients machine, has the same exact problem, I've reinstalled IE, I've reinstalled dial up networking, hell, I've even reinstalled WINDOWS, and NONE OF THESE THINGS WORKED. The mcrepair.exe file WORKS. It FIXES your problem!
Rule #1 - READ THE THREAD.

not_a_newbie speaks truth!..
People.. If you're having the problem like i did download this link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcrepair.exe
when the program asks if you want to replace with the older file, hit "yes" everytime, then reboot.. PROBLEM SOLVED!!

mcrepair i believe is for win98 and se.
i solves a lot of problems
if you have windows98 and after installing
software you notice blank windows
when trying to open new pages, or freezing
seems a lot of software people are using
xp dlls and some are not compatable with win98.
i would first uninstall the program if you
know what it is then use mcrepair.exe
if you don't know the program i would try it anyway. it has helped a lot of people.

Wow! What a fix!
I had all the above problems. Also, FineReader 7.0 used to crash when I tried to export recognized pages to Word and Excel. All is solved now.
Thanks a lot you fellows.
I recommend anyone running win98 with this dll error being reported to run MCRepair.exe
