while trying to save a document, I accidentally clicked on a warning asking if I wanted to replace Winword.exe
Now I can't open any Word documents or get into Word.
I tried to reinstall from the Master CD but I had to replace my cd rom a while back and the Master couldn't recognize the model
Help, please

do you mean that the cd rom couldn't read the cd?
If so it must be a burned cd, that is to say that it's not a retail copy. Perhaps it was burned with easy cd's 'direct cd' where only the program direct cd can read it.
Nero also has a something like this also. You must first run this program then load the cd into the rom
hope this helps
If this just happened recently and you have xp cant you just restore it back to a date where everything was fine?

No, it's not a burned cd. It's the Master CD that came with the computer. The screen said it could not recognize the cd ROM model.. probably because it's a new cd ROM. This is an old computer..hp 1998.
I don't even know if Microsoft can help, but it seems to me I should be able to download something to restore the corrupt file. I don't know what to ask for

OMG Well to tell the truth I've never heard of a message asking to 'replace winword.exe'
what operating system do you have, what were you doing when this message came up.
You may also want to speak to the person who installed the cd rom if it has never been recognised.
Your going to have to get the program off the cd as there's no legitimate place to download proprietary software like word.
First verify that when you boot the system that cd rom not found (not listed) Check to make sure it is not showing in the left pane in windows explorer.
If it is nowhere to be seen for example there's no D or E drives then
1 turn off computer, unplug it take off the cover.
2 put the cover on the floor and touch it to dis any static electricity.
3 unplug the ribbon from the back of the cd.
4 with cover off plug in comp turn it on.
5 turn it off unplug it
6 plug the ribbon back in put cover back on. plug in and start computer. If the cd is recognised this time around windows will take care of it.
If it doesn't then you'll need an hp cd rom perhaps being a name brand they force you to buy their products.

They were writing a document, clicked save, and accidentally highlighted winword.exe to name the file. Clicked save, and the standard Windows message "Are you sure you want to replace ~filename~?" was displayed. Click ok, and then winword.exe is replaced by a document file causing the program to cease to be on the hard drive.
System restore CDs look at the hardware IDs of the components installed in the machine. The CDrom quit, was replaced by a brand new unit, and the hardware ID is not the same as the one from the unit that quit. The restore cd halts because it thinks the end user is trying to use it on a machine that isnt allowed to run the restore.
Recommendations:
If you still have the old CDrom, reinstall the dead unit as the master drive on the secondary chain. Put the restore cd in the new cdrom (slave unit on the secondary chain) and attempt to run the restore with this configuration. Likelyhood of success: 20%
Find someone else that has the same version of Office installed. Email winword.exe as an attachment to yourself from their computer. Go home, and check your email. click start, find, files and folders (Win95/98/ME) and search for winword.exe You should then see the path to the file (probably c:\msoffice\office10\winword.exe) write this location down. Open the email with the attachment, save attachments, put in the location of the file you located with Find, (You will get another box identical to the one you saw when you saved the document, click YES you are sure you want to replace it or the problem wont go away)
Likelyhood of success: 96%
Best of luck to you all ...
