Hi everyone,

I have a message coming up when I log into my email, it has just started, after I did some microsoft updates yesterday.

The message is:
Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Which mailclient do you use? Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, etc etc?
What OS are your running?
Did it work properly first?

You can check default settings within your browser or emaiclient.
Open Internet Explorer
Go to Tools
Go to Internet Options
(if you dont have IE the same option come availeble after you open the tools-screen using the startbutton)
Select the tab "Programs"
Make sure the default emailhandler is the correct program.

Hope thsi helps.

I, too, get the message "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed." I have Internet Explorer, and I have checked the tools/internet options/programs and it is set that Outlook Express is the program it says it will use.

I have investigated and found that this will come up if the target e-mail address is more than 470 characters. The target addresses I am clicking on are nowhere near 40 characters, no less 470 characters.

Part of the problem is/was caused by having Netscape Communicator installed, as it wanted to be the default mail client and it would not let the setting in IE govern which default mail client should be used. I uninstalled Netscape Communicator and then I started getting these messages every time I clicked on an e-mail address, in order to create/generate an e-mail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

OR-

The problem is the length of the link!

If you cut it down to 25 Email addresses, you are OK (as long as each Email address is only 16 characters long)

More to the point, you can only fit 470 characters between the ' href=" ' and the closing ' " ' Try it for yourself below: the link on the left will work, the one on the right will not. I last tested this with Internet Explorer and Microsoft® Outlook® 2000

Hi:

I am also struggling with the same problem.
My email client is Outlook2000. Outlook is working fine sending and receiving.
It's when I click on an email link in Explorer that I get the error message.

So I'm waiting with you all for a nice person willing to explain us how we can fix this problem.

Thanks.

Hi,

Silvia, I am facing exactly the same issue. I have checked everything. It occured just after the IT dpt reinstalled MS office on another drive than my system's one, that maybe a tip..
Please check if you IE and Outlook are installed on the same drive.
Thank you,

Greg

Hi All,

I found the workaround!!
From the IE (mine is 6.0): Tools\Internet Options, choose the program tab, then in the email field you should be able to choose between Outlook or Outlook express. Choose Outlook express. Then go to a web page with an email link, click to send a mail, it will open outlook express. Then return to IE and change back the default email program to Outlook and now, it works.
I hope it will work for you too ;-)
Thank you,

Greg

I'm having the same problem with Outlook Express, which occurred after I installed Outlook by mistake and then removed it.

When I check Tools/Programs then the E-mail selection box is blank, and there are no choices to be picked from.

Same problem - using Outlook Express and Windows ME. I get this message, but it seems Outlook Express goes ahead and sends my message anyway. So it is just annoying and I would love to find a way to eliminate it. It first occurred after my hard disk crashed, and I had it replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Gregorie:
Thanks for the idea. I worked for me. My problem apparently occurred when I uninstalled the Earthlink software (really bad software setup...don't load it if you haven't). It must have left my system with some bad links. Switching the default program to OE, then back to Outlook after clicking on a link did the trick.
I had thought oabout trying this, but didn't feel like taking the risk in case it screwed something up. Thanks.
P.S. I'm no newbie, I'ma network administrator, but I had never seen this error message before. You never know where you'll find useful info.

Gregoire, Well done from me. I run 98se with OE6. I had the option of Hotmail or OE.Switched to Hotmail and back to OE, and now it is OK. If you know the trick to get Ie6 to open in a new window and not just show a blank page, I would be even more impressed. Ad popups come up as a blank as well.I have no firewall and disabling antivirus makes not difference.

Jon B,

I work in tech support and saw the same empty window issue when IE6 would open a new window. Try downloading the latest service pack, and even if it says you've got the SP installed reinstall it. That should end the issue.

Hope that Helps.

I too have the same problem. We are having IE5.5 and Outlook200 in all our machine. When we change the options in the Internet Explorer, it's only working for the current session. After logoff, we need to set that once again to solve the issue. Any help in this issue is welcome.

Gregoire,

Well done! million thanks to you. I have this problem for months and call many technical support people, but none of their remedies worked unless re-install IE. My company has more than 100 PCs and re-install IE is not feasible solution. Again thanks Pro.

Hi. Gregoire's fix doesn't work for me. The reason is that when I click on Programs in Internet Properties in Internet Explorer, Outlook Express is not there to be selected. Nothing is there. I'm using Windows XP and I have downloaded Service Pack 1. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alioune

The ONLY solution is to use other browser rather than IE. I use Netscape 6 and it works like a charm! (IE5 and Outlook Express didn't work so I used Netscape 6!) :->

Unfortunately, Greg's solution does not work for my situation.

Interesting thing is that some e-mail links do work for me and others get the "...default mail client is not properly installed" error. How can it be so inconsistent? The system I am running on is a Windows NT Workstation. IE is version 6. Could it possibly be in the mailto: code which includes a subject and body text?

Dave

I had to reinstall Office 97 because of not being able to apply Office SR 2 (running W2K). After this, my IE 6 had no default mail setting and nothing to select from either. By Installing Outlook 97 from the Office 97 suite, I was able to have Outlook as a choice for IE email, but since I like to use Outlook Express, I needed to have Outlook Express as a choice too. Reapplying IE SP 1 did not help, only Outlook showed for selection. After I found that the Outlook Express client registry entries for mail were incomplete (compared to those I found in a properly functioning XP registry), I made the necessary changes and now had Outlook Express appear as a selection choice in IE. However, when I chose Outlook Express as the default, I got the “Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed” message. This is where I again compared email parameters to my functioning IE on the XP machine and found that the folder options for file type “URL:MailTo Protocol” needed to have the “Use DDE” box checked, “msimn” added to the “Application:” box and “System” entered in the “Topic:” box. Once those changes were made, the error message was gone and my Outlook Express started functioning correctly from IE.

I have a similar problem to Dave. I tried to follow your steps, Dave, but I didn't know where to find the client registry and folder options. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

All of these problems indicate that OE is not properly configured as the default email client on your computer. To be sure OE is the default mail client, close OE, click Start| Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

Of course change the path if you installed OE elsewhere.

Now click Start| Settings| Control Panel, double-click Internet Options, then click on the Programs tab, and verify that OE is now the default email client. (You can also get there from the IE Tools| Internet Options menu). Then open OE and click Tools| Options, and at the bottom of the General tab, verify that OE is set as the default. If it is, the "Make Default" button will be grayed out. If not, click the button.

Bingo! JayT's analysis is spot-on. I followed his instructions, and in less than 5 minutes had Outlook Express operating as my default mail client. Thank you so much, JayT!

In IE 6.0 Outlook is not a choice when you go to Internet Options, Programs, email; what out user has as options is Outlook Express, MSN Explorer and Hotmail. Outlook is his default email. Any suggestions on where the selections can be tweeked?

First, a big thanks to JayT for solving my problem. I don't have to format after all! :-)

Second, Jana, it would seem that you do not have Outlook Express installed. I would recommend downloading the latest Internet Explorer/Outlook Express combination from the Microsoft website. You can go to http://www.microsoft.com/ie to download version 6. Personally, I would be somewhat suspicious of a virus, so you might look into that if you haven't already...

Michael, to get to the Internet Options screen, go to the Internet Control Panel (by clicking on Start, Settings, Control Panel, then double-clicking on 'Internet'). In there, select the 'Progams' tab at the top of the window, then look at the second item labeled 'Email'. Whatever program is shown there will be used by Windows as the default email client.

King, I am stumped. :-) I tried applying JayT's fix to Outlook with no success. Does 'Microsoft Outlook' show up in your list of choices as the default email client?

Best of luck to all and thank you once more!

Jayt, Thanks for that. Gregs solution did not work with me and yours definately did. I have since found out that the problem is that I have 2 drives, C for system stuff and D for games and program files. Both have a directory called program files and both had a subdirectory called outlook express. However the directory in d: was empty, which is strange because i have changed d:\program files to be the default installation directory for software. At any rate for some reason the installation still created the c: directory for Outlook express, dunno why. A simple path issue. Terrible. sort it out Bill Gates! and update tha knowledge base.

Win XP Home, installed Word 2002 from Works Suite 2003. Everything was OK but than I installed several applications (Excel, Outlook, Access) from Office 97… Didn’t want the Outlook so uninstalled it and after that OE would not show as default mail client.
I did the "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
per JayT advice and it showed OK in the IE but there still is a problem that may be related.
In Word, under “Send to” the “email recipient” is grayed out.
In the Windows Explorer, if I right click on a file and try to “Send to” “email recipient”, a dialog for setting up Microsoft Exchange comes up but even if I try, no profile gets set up because of a non descript error.
I think that Exchange got installed and (partially) removed with Outlook…
I looked in Add remove programs / Windows Components and did not see it there.
Everythink works OK except the programs appear to be totally confused as to what service to use / is available to them for email.
I’m lost as what to do next…

I have a similar, yet slightly different problem. Running Windows NT 4.0 with Outlook 2000, and IE 5.5 and getting the Default mail client error message when executing it, even though I have no recipients noted. If I make the body of the message smaller it works properly, with the limit of characters at about 840. Anyone have the same problem? Solutions?

I work at a large company with many users that need to run this code, so my solution has to be rather global.

I would encounter the "default mail client is not properly installed" message every time I clicked a mailto link... and then approximately 70 blank IE windows would pop up in a row (I'm not kidding). There was no OE option in the email list. After trying a lot of things, I found this page and did what JayT suggested. It took me back to the good old days of normal mail links. Thanks very much!

I needed Outlook as the default, I did Tools -> Internet Options -> the programs tab and then changed from Outlook to Outlook Express, then hit apply, I then changed from Outlook Express to Outlook and then hit apply. This forced the changed, which were messed up by Microsoft updates. This is the solution.
