If I delete the back web program will that stop Norton from updating my virus scan or the utilities ??

I've cleaned out several backweb things using spybot search and destroy with no adverse effects. I don't have norton but if norton installed it then it probably uses it to throw messages to your desktop.
I can only suggest that you download spybot search and destroy, it's an excellent program and run it, if backweb shows up clean it out. If you suffer ill effects then search and destroy can restore it. If your only trying to stop norton's updater then find the settings in norton and change the updateing to manual.
hope this helps

Norton Antivirus does not use BackWeb for its updates. It uses proprietary technology for the job. If BackWeb is in your machine, it may have gotten there by some other means.

Some more info on BackWeb may be found at http://PestPatrol.com/PestInfo/B/BackWeb.asp

i have a hp pavilion, and in reading the hp website they mention that backweb is not need... i think they have an article in there telling you other software that you can remove to speed up your system and clear out space. if you cannot remove backweb because you tried to delete it (or any other program) you should re-install the software, and then use the add remove programs icon in control panel. this will allow you to do a better job at removing the program, gets a little dangerous when you delete stuff without deleting all the necessaries in the registry. if you do remove backweb make sure you do your windows updates and check in with hp and search your machine to see if they have any specific upgrades

I just got an HP and it uses backweb (HP center) for software/firmware updates. Problem is, it doesnt work. I've turned on backweb manually, but no visible interface with it appears even though task manager shows it running. BEWARE: the HP instructions for removal and reinstallation of it are not correct. I tried removing and reinstalling per instructions to correct the problem, but (after talking with tech support after the instructions didnt work) the only way to reinstall is to do a nondestructive system recovery off the partitioned hard drive. Guess what. Did that per their instructions and the darn thing still doesnt work.

Anyone have any ideas?

My advice goes against all your efforts to install and use backweb...sorry ! But you could uninstall completely, finish it off with SpyBot, and do your HP updates the old fashioned way (by going to their support/download site from time to time). That's what I did. Backweb should not be on our machines to start with. Many companies have gone to it ; my guess, it's cheaper than making their own updaters and they could be getting kickbacks from adware companies... Backweb is also used by truly malicious spyware applications ; keeping track of which is which can be a real pain.

Invalid Backweb application 137903
When I boot I get Invalid BackWeb applicatiion
"137903" 3 times during boot sequence. I went to Run - msconfig - start up/ but I didn't find
where it should say backweb on any list...could it be called another name perhaps?

Try a "Search" (or "Find", depending on which Windows you have) for backweb (click on "Start", then "Search"). Look in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, for anything that looks like an Updater application (HP, Compaq or others).

Josh, Lisa, whoever else with this problem :

BackWeb is spyware. Not necessarily intrusive, but spyware nonetheless. It comes with HP software (and Compaq, Kodak, Logitech, and others) that is installed to "Update" your programs via the internet (something like "Live Update" for Norton antivirus). Problem is : BackWeb can be used for malicious purposes, and cause problems on your computers. My advice : remove any application that uses BackWeb and do your software updates the old-fashioned way, by visiting websites from time to time (like HP or Compaq).

Now, you need to go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and look for any program that looks like an "Updater" for the programs mentionned above. Uninstall them (Remove). Then, download SpyBot Search and Destroy, update it (crucial) and run it. You will see a lot of entries with check marks next to them, ready for "fixing", and a lot of "BackWeb lite" entries that won't have check marks. Put check marks next to everything (right-click one, and choose "Select All" and have SpyBot fix everything. You're done. Here's a link to get SpyBot :

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

(scroll down and download SpyBot... v.1.2)

Good luck.

Backweb is an application installed on many OEM machines (Compaq, HP). They
use it for support issues. Disable it by going to the startup tab of
msconfig (click start/run, enter "msconfig" and click ok).

I installed Spybot and deleted the BackWeb lite items. I am getting this message...Runner Error Invalid Backweb application id "137903". I did a Spybot Recovery, but still get the message. I was going to do a System Restore, but it shows no previous good points. I can't do a System Restore, because there are no previous good points. I can't restore to an earlier date, calendar will not change to a previous month or the next month. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks
