I need your help again, I have become re-infected by the same thing that I reported back on 18/12/04. You sorted me out last time, can you take a look at my Hijack file and tell me what needs to go. I have already deleted some items that hijackthis identified and I have done an adaware scan.

- I still keep getting the following message.
res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm

My Home Page is altered and I get pop ups. I ran Hijackthis and have the following logfile.

I'm guessing you've omitted to post the top part of your log intentionally, because of the lack of updates for XP and IE ?? Man... running IE 5 is asking for tons of trouble... and if you don't have SP2 for XP, that's also asking for trouble !

Either way, let's try and clean that CWS infection, although I'm not sure the tools work with IE 5... Doesn't XP come with IE 6 by default ?

I'll look for your older thread and get back to you.

Hmmm... found your old thread, and you do have IE 6 installed, yet you seem to think you have 5 ?? Ed even asked you about it, and you didn't answer. Your HJT log showed IE 6 SP1 ; have you gotten tose updates yet, as Ed asked you to do ?? Just post a complete log, if unsure...

Beshoff: Looks like the other guys were helping ya and never got back to ya so this is what you need to do.

I see two things right off the bat, that we can do.

You need this app.

AboutBuster

Create a new folder (on your Desktop, for convenience, and name it "Buster"). Double-click the zipped AboutBuster install file, then double-click on aboutbuster.exe ; extract all files to your new "Buster" folder. Double-click AboutBuster.exe and click Ok. Next, hit update. A new screen should popup. On that screen hit Check for Updates. If it says it found an update hit Download Updates. Exit the tool for now. If it doesn't need updating, it will automatically tell you and exit.

Now, open your "Buster" folder again and run the tool : Hit Start and then Ok. The program should start scanning. Once the scan is complete, copy/paste the report into NotePad and save it. Then hit Exit and reboot. Run the tool a second time for good measure, and save the new report to NotePad as well. Reboot if any new files were detected by the tool.. Scan with HijackThis!, then post the new log, along with the AboutBuster reports.

And this one.

Restricted Zones Remover

With the zones remover you need to save as, and save it to your desktop, once its there right click your mouse and press install.

When these are done post your log and that about buster log as well please.

Ok lets get you some new apps as that one is outdated.

Just go into add/remove programs and dump that version, here is a link to the newest version and build.

Ad-Aware SE - Personal

With this version download it, open it, close it once again, reopen it, make sure to update and run it let it fix whayever it finds.

I am also goin gto recommend a second one that runs right along side of it and causes no conflicts.

SpyBot Search & Destroy

Spybot Tutorial

there are some new features in this one please read the tutorial and again update. Run both apps and then send a new log.

Hey Guys ; sorry, I was out for the evening.

Just a heads up with this type of infection : we need to run CWShredder in Safe Mode as well as Buster, in order to kick CWS real hard...

Beshoff : you can do the scans prescribed by John. Next, you 'll need to download this tool : CWShredder and install it on your Desktop. Don't run it yet.

Now, Reboot your computer in Safe Mode, then run CWShredder and click on "Fix" (not on "Scan only"). Still in Safe Mode, run Buster again and save the report.

Reboot to Normal Mode, then scan with HijackThis!, save the log and post it here for review, along with the Buster report.

Sorry for taking so long to reply but I had major problems and the PC would not boot up.

Anyway I have done the following:

Updated to Adaware SE - I did notice this detected much more spyware

Ran Spybot - searched and destroyed

CWShredder - keeps on failing for some reason - this also happened I deleted the previous installation and then re-installed

Ok Beshoff, things are looking much-much better !

Just a few entries to clean up, and a few mystery processes to investigate...

First, do a "Scan only" with HijackThis!, close ALL other open programs/windows, then put a checkmark next to these lines :

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O16 - DPF: {22A88341-AFCB-45F0-A856-C2BAE74F878E} (InstallX Class) - http://www.20x2p.com/5a8cde6f/enter.cab

O23 - Service: Power Manager - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Now, click on "Fix checked" and reboot.

Time to have a few files analysed... I see two processes and a browser helper object that are totally mysterious ; I've only found two other logs (from France) that had the same ones, and the helpers there didn't fix them, and didn't explain what they were...

Ok, follow this link : Kaspersky online file scanner. Next, click on the "Browse" button and locate this file :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTFMONSS.EXE

then click on "Submit". You'll have results shortly.

Do the same for this file :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSRSSW.EXE

and this one :

C:\WINDOWS\wtlbass32.dll

Let me know what Kaspersky had to say... and post a new HJT log as well, please. Good luck..

I deleted the lines indicated. I checked with Kaspersky the listed files. Results are:

wtlbass.dll - clean
ctfmonss and csrssw - it could not find.

These files were picked up on my system with SpySweeper - everytime I fix check these they do not delete. I also highlighted these on the hijack log - but they do not go. If I do another Hijack scan straight after rboot they are back again.

Is there any other way of getting rid of these files? I believe these are the cause.

The ads are still popping up and the navcancl page.

Thanks for your help

Ok, it appears that this Coolweb variant has changed on us. Could yo tell me what happens when you run CWShredder ? If you get an error, could you write it down and let us know what it is please ?

Ok Beshoff, let's go after them...

First, let's make sure you can See hidden files and folders.

Next, download this tool : KillBox and install it on your Desktop. Better print these out :

Open KillBox, and enable the Delete on Reboot option ;

Copy the full path of this file, then paste it in the top box ("Full Path of File to Delete") :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSRSSW.EXE

Click on the little Stop-Sign button(red circle with white "X") to kill the file. Say "NO" to reboot.

Enable Delete on Reboot again ;

Paste the full path of this file in the top box :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTFMONSS.EXE

Click on the Stop-Sign, and say "NO" to reboot.

Enable Delete on Reboot one last time ;

Paste this path into the top box :

C:\WINDOWS\wtlbass32.dll

Click on the Stop-Sign, then say "YES" to reboot.

Once restarted, scan with HijackThis! and put checkmarks next to these :

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home

O2 - BHO: VDOMP Class - {A0ED918D-B8E6-4c3d-BD15-1DB1AE9A5DD3} - C:\WINDOWS\wtlbass32.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMONSS] C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTFMONSS.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CSRSSW] C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSRSSW.EXE

Ok, make sure all other programs are closed (especially browser windows) and click on "Fix checked".

Reboot to Safe Mode, and look around to make sure these files are gone ; delete them if found :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSRSSW.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTFMONSS.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\wtlbass32.dll

Reboot normally. Scan with HJT again, save the log and post it here for review. Good luck :-)

Hey Beshoff ; I like what I see here, nice and clean :-)

You've just created the first available fix for others searching the net for those mysterious processes !! No kidding, there's absolutely nothing out there (except maybe on one forum that is shielded from Google searches).

I have another victim in the wings, with the same infection as well !!! So now I can feel good about the fix ;-)

I was hesitant at first, but when you told me that SpySweeper tripped over them, that was enough for me. Nicely done BTW, that wasn't an easy fix. Let us know if you need help with anything else (including SP2).

Some kind of heads-up would have been nice "Paul". Although this forum is "open", we do have a small team of "regulars" that does the fixing when HJT logs are posted. Any pro help is welcomed, but there is a way to achieve that, IMHO. The victim here had already received the fix. This hijack is brand new, so new in fact that no other fixes were available anywhere, therefore I doubt you've had first hand experience with it.

Seeing how you took the critique, it is probably best that you find another venue to "help". Many forums would love to have a trained pro onboard, so it shouldn't be too hard for you. Of course, you'll need to register and follow protocols, if that's something you'd be able to live with..

Hey Mark ! I kinda suspected that people would Google their way here, because I couldn't find anything myself while searching !! We got lucky somehow, because Beshoff had warnings from SpySweeper on those funky processes, so I went after them.

Would you like us to take a look at a HijackThis! log, just to make sure you're clean ?

LOL !! You wouldn't believe how many people share those sentiments Mark... These "people" mean business, and they get paid a lot for what they do. Some say they are in Russia (expert guess :-), and very, very well equipped to build these things, and hide...

I noticed more postings on my posting. I would like to say ignore the postings by Paul who tells you not to delete files CSRSS.EXE (system file!) or CTFMON.EXE.....

The guy is a jerk - listen to the chaps on this site who are very helpful - DELETE THESE FILES - they are the cause of the trouble.

Look my PC is running brilliantly without these so called system files - or I wouldnt be able to post.

Actually Beshoff, Paul is right.

CSRSS.EXE and CTFMON.EXE are absolutely legit system processes.

Your hijack, in a sneaky attempt to fool victims, used slightly altered names, which are CSRSSW.EXE and CTFMONSS.EXE.

Fighting spyware is a tricky business, and paying attention to detail is essntial...

No worries :-)

I echo Mark H's comments; thank my lucky stars I found this post. This wtlbass virus had eaten up hours of my and my IT person's time over the past couple of weeks. Thanks Mark for your invaluable assistance.

To whom it may concern: I believe I have rid myself of the coolwebsearch variant that I had. At least it hasn't returned so far. I was running a AVG antivirus scan when I decided to terminate ctfmonss.exe and csrssw.exe from Windows Task Manager. Within a few seconds of termination, both tried to reappear but AVG spotted them both immediately. I was able to move csrssw.exe to the vault, it wouldn't let me do anything w/ ctfmonss.exe. Although I was finally able to delete ctfmonss.exe and wtlbass32.dll through Windows Explorer. Microsoft Anti-Spyware called the coolwebsearch variant: cameup and also I saw one called toolband. Microsoft & Spybot & Ad-Aware would only remove parts. Coolwebshredder would only fix registry changes. I hope some of this makes sense. Newbie.org has been very helpful. Thank you
