I had just cleaned out a couple of files and i think i may have erased something i wasn't supposed to.
I understand that symantec is associated with Norton Anti-virus. I do not have Norton, i have Mcafee as my anti-virus protection. So i don't know why i would have something from symantec??
After i re-booted my computer this came up:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exsists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386
press a key to continue

I do not know what this file or application is. is there a way i can find out what this missing file is and get this msg off of my computer at start up?
Any help would be appreciated.Thanks

Teresa

I had the same problem (cleaning my harddisk, haha) and I've tried everything, even the clean boot, with no succes.

The only thing that worked was to download symevnt.exe (for example from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-MU.html) and unpack it to C:\Program Files\Symantec

Good luck, It worked for me (win 95).

If this is a file you are using, you can reinstall Nortons anti virus. If you do not need this file, or you have already removed symantec and live reg and live update from add and removes, go to start/find/files and folders and type in symantec. Delete all folders. Leave them in recycle bin so they can be restored if you have a problem. (you shouldnt have a problem but one never knows for sure) Once this is done, reboot computer. You can then go to start/run and type in msconfig and make sure all references to Nortons, or Symantec are unchecked. Reboot Donna

ifmyou dont have nortons and are getting this error message click start then run and in the box type sfc and click OK this will search for changed/deleted/currupt files to restore from windows disc or other setup discs. Sometimes programs change/alter files the system needs and causes problems when program is uninstalled.
If you do have/use nortons and are having this error then reinstall norton software.

Go to regedit. Back up entire registry. Search for symenvt.386 (There will probably be 2 keys) Delete both of them. reboot. Problem solved.

don't reinstall it if you do not want it!

This error message usually occurs after uninstalling Norton Antivirus. IF YOU DO NOT NEED OR WANT NORTON ANTIVIRUS ANYMORE and would like to get rid of this annoyance:

Click Start > Run > Regedit

Search for symevnt.386 in the registry and delete the key you find. Should be at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\current control set\services\vxd

Search for any other instances and delete those as well. This should fix the problem...

Visit www.microsoft.com for info on editing the registry if you're nervous...

After removing PC anywhere, and Norton antivirus from a clean Win98 SE install, I found a couple of registry keys that need to be deleted to stop this error message.

*** Back up any registry keys that you modify! *** Click on Start, Run and enter REGEDIT.EXE
press enter. Press CTRL-F and enter SYMEVNT.386 and press enter. I found several places where symevnt.386 was still entered.

*** TO BACKUP A REGISTRY KEY... ***
*** [PRIOR to making any changes] ***
With the registry key [left had side of regedit] selected, press ALT-r,e - OR Click on Registry, then Export.

I usually name the new registry export file the same name as the Registry key. I save it first to the DESKTOP, so it can easily be found - Click on save.

Select and delete the lines in the right hand window that contain symevnt.386.

Press F3 to find the next entry. If the KEY changes, create a new export file.

Double clicking on the created .reg file re-enters the changes back into the registry, effectively undoing the changes.

Hope this helps you.
