If you cant restore to a date prior to the problem try to find the tool'system file checker and run it it will prompt you for files changed or missing

find a program on your system called system file checker it will prompt you for the cd if it finds missing or currupted files.

could be SirCam worm or Yaha worm Symantec have fixes

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.removal.tool.html

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.yaha.removal.tool.html

run both tools once ignore stopping the system advice for now because you can't. Once you have run the tools you should now be able to turn off you system restore, now run both tools again and restart.

btw the system file checker for xp is "sfc.exe" run this from a command prompt after using the above tools thus "sfc/scannow" (no quotes)

ps. Should have said that when you download the toools from symantec save it directly to a floppy. If you can't double click to run them shutdown and restart windows Safe Mode Command Prompt only and run them from the command line.

It could be a virus. Do a

Start-Run-SFC /scannow

and it should replace the file. Also do a free virus scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com
