Hope somebody can help.

My computer freezes and i get the following message

windows xp error driver irql not less or equal

Plus another line which includes -
usbport.sys

Now the above only happens when i am trying to convert an avi file to mpeg (heavey cpu use?)

anything to do with the new digi cam that i installed ?(uses usb port)

Any help would be appreciated

More than likely, reggie, though there is a possibility that there is an IRQ conflict, or a conflict with Norton

If you can get into safe mode, then use the system restore feature of XP to roll back to a restore point (preferably to a checkpoint before the the event occured)

Where possible, when doing an intensive conversion, reduce potential RAM usage to an absolute minimum and if necessary increase your page file size

Hi - i am still getting this error - and it seems to happen when the something graphically intensive is happening, or when the cpu is being worked particularly hard.

Any more ideas ??

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL : this is a real painin the rear error because it is such a wide ranging general error. it occurs when two devices try to write to the same memory space(reminiscent of win 98's gpf). however the difference is this is a sign of hardware error not software. the driver update is always a good start.now check your sys info and see how many devices are using one irq - chances are you will find six or seven devices using one irq. dynamic irq's are great but this is one setback. of those using the irq you must tie down which one it is. your description sounds to me to be a video issue. if you are using nvidia or asus/nvidia this could be your culprit. if driver updating doesn't work try pulling two of the offending (irq sharers) devices out-reboot shut down replace them and see if xp re assigns a more passive irq channel.

i'm getting the same problem, except the screen lists scsiport.sys

i've only been getting these problems after installing Raid 0'ing a couple of harddrives. sometimes the error occurs during the bootup of windows or when i'm actually in windows. it seems pretty random.

System:

Windows XP Pro
2 80GB harddrives Raid 0 striped
1 200GB harddrive
mobo=asus a7v333
chip=athlon xp 2100+

I think i know what the problem is know! at least my problem! The Ram memory is overheated thats why this errors occurs.
The problem with my computer is that the CPU fan has broken, thats why its so hot.

Check if your ram memory is ok. Test it on an other computer!

I get the driver irql on my new HP with XP when I am just using an instant messenger? Is there no simple solution?
Patrick

04/27/03
Ed, I partially tried your solution so far. I'm not having much luck. I only have 3 cards in my computer, ethernet, modem, and graphics. The graphics is an AGP, and I only have one AGP slot, so I can't move it to another slot. I can't move the modem either, since it has a designated location. I've moved the ethernet card, and I crash less often, but I still crash.

I actually went as far as getting a new graphics card and installing it, and it didn't help, so I don't know if taking it out and putting it back in will fix much.

Any more suggestions?

i have been getting this error for about 3 months, and I finally have time to do something about this, I tried to reinstall my xp, take out all the cards except my video card. during the installation process, that error pops out, I even try to switch to a pci video card. same thing. I have read too many post (5000)about this error, a lot of people has different opionion, and I don't know who's right and who's not. but switching my memory diffinitely solve the problem. so try it .

I have been getting this error for so long its part of my daily life. I can go days or weeks without it then suddenly get it 2-8 times in one day. Fustrated, I reformatted & installed XP again. On the format...with absolutely nothing installed...I got the blue screen with the message! Grr!! I have only 1 irq sharing 4 items...3 from my motherboard & 1 my telephone modem which I no longer use...so I have disabled it...and still...I get the message...it does not matter what I'm doing at the time...anything from simply chatting on MSN to being on a simple site...it does not seem to be particular about when it appears. So with that...anyone have any thoughts???

Linda, I have the same problem with my pc as you, just as you said, anything from simple chatting to web browsing, and yea, it can go days without crashes and then several incidents in one day. Anoys the hell out of me, I cant get rid of it. I started some months ago after I upgraded my system with a new Abit mainboard. I had MSI before and never experienced that problem. I only get this crash while on internet, if I'm offline my pc is completely stable. I felt I have tried everything, but there is one last thing I'm gonna try, and that is to get a new modem, I'm currently using a USB modem, I'll get myself a pci modem instead. If that does not work I will replace my mainboard back to MSI again.

I'm getting the exact same errors as well. I am playing a 3D game (Starfleet Command III). Suddenly, for no reason at all, the blue screen of death appears taunting me, laughing at me! I either get
'IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL' or 'PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA'
So I tried everything I could try. No matter what I did it still popped up. I ran system information to see if there were any conflicts!!

IRQ 11 was shared by 2 usb controllers, nvidea graphics card and modem! I/O ports and memory address were shared by my AMD processor to AGP controller and my graphics card!

The only connection I can see is the bloody graphics card!

But, no matter what I do I can't change the IRQ, it just won't let me!!!

Please help me anyone!

Well I've tried searching through countless help boards, and I'm still none the wiser. I started with my comp freezing a few times a week. Then it moved onto the blue screen with driver_irql_not_less_or_equal message. Now I cannot boot up at all! It just goes into a cycle of reaching the windows logo screen, then rebooting again.. and again.. and again... Tried changing the RAM, and this didnt work. I've got nothing extra installed other than what came with the original PC package, and a month ago (before I started getting the blue screen, only freezing) I formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows XP. Now I cannot get into windows to change any settings (safe mode hangs on the driver mup.sys) and I'm utterly baffled. Anyone know how to solve this or am I resigned to calling in a professional??

I was getting a hang on mup.sys also. That only happened when I disabled "APIC mode" on my Abit nForce2 mobo.

Right after mup.sys the video is initialized. I am sure my problem has something to do with video. All my problems only started after I installed the actual nVidia drivers for my Ti4800. I just starting installing this system yesterday. I'm back to running Safe Mode or VGA mode. No problems happen when I'm not running the 'REAL' drivers.

I've tried switching the IRQs around and disabling just about everything. No luck so far, but next I'll try different RAM and video card.

Well at least I can find comfort in the fact that I'm not alone in this!

I get this message intermittently when I'm online, but mostly when playing Praetorians and Medieval Total War - often get the Page Fault in . Also these two games have an annoying habit of kicking me out onto the desktop as well. Oh yes or freezing up completely

I'm running an AMD Athlon XP2200+, 256meg of RAM, Invidia Geforce2 MX graphics and Realtek AC97 sound cards.

The shop where I bought the PC have assured me that it's a driver conflict of some sort (which guess what my garauntee doesn't cover) or possibly a conflict caused by one or more Windows XP updates. In short I need to uninstall these, all my games and then try re-installing stuff to see what happens.

Will let you all know how I get on!

I keep getting the same errors for weeks now and have also tried driver upgrades, firmware upgrades, removing HW, removing services, etc. The only thing that has so far seemed to work for me is to keep the case open and have a fan blowing on it. It kept the system up for three days once, i'll try again and report. Others too have reported overheating as a potential problem. Those who keep having the problem should try cooling the system and updating this message board if it works.

The blue screen errors are:

page fault in nonpaged area.
irql not less or equal.
kmode exception not handled.

In previous experiences this was due to overheating.

ideas:

first if your video card is sharing IRQs with several other devices in your system, change the IRQ the video card is using. This has the be done in your systems BIOS, usually in the advanced settings.

Also, heat will cause rediculous errors to run rampant in your system somewhat un-predictably. If you are not certain the your case has adequate ventalation, download the Winbond temperature monitor and install it on your PC. this software monitors the thermal sensrons on your motherboard and processor and reports the current temperatures. If your CPU is running hotter than 165F you should look into drooping your case temp. Add fans, put it in the freezer, whatever.

Finally, good luck these errors are difficult to track down without a lot of paitence and expierence. Keep as few devices sharing IRQs as possible, also try re-setting your BIOS to fail-safe settings and test it out a bit. If this works, slowy re-enable the rest of your settings and devicesa until the error begins to occure again. Then you have your culprit.

May the schwartz be with you.

Problems
- Instability XP / Windows 98

Erorrs:
1 - blue screen: irql not less or equal (xp, concerning videocard)
2 - blue screen: STOP 0x0050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA (xp setup, xp, windows 98 ie errors)
3 - blue screen: concerning videocard in xp
Advice Windows XP: turn off Memory Shadowing and Caching.
4 - windows startup: "Windows has encountered an error accessing the registry. Windows will fix the error and restart your computer"
--

My Story:
I have been using windows xp for somes months. Everything worked fine, only my s3 savage 2000 videocard gave problems. The XP drivers are not offically supported, so I could expect problems. *they actually said, instability could occur. ( see http://lmoschella.tripod.com/graphics_more/id2.html )
2d everything worked well, so I disabled the 3d acceleration under XP, and played games on windows98. Windows 98 has ran withtout problems for 2.5 year. I often made images, (Backup of a operating system), so I always can easily reload a fresh windows, wich should have no problems at all.

When the problems started:
One day, I reinstalled my Windows 98, from XP, with DriveImage2002. I got an error, while writing. As a result of this, I got a halfwritten windows 98 installation. A few hours later, I restored windows 98 again. Now I succeeded. That is, when the problems started. I booted to Windows 98, and Windows says during start-up: "Windows has encountered an error accessing the registry. Windows will fix the error and restart your computer"

Then when going to Windows XP, I eperience instability. IE often freezes, and I need close it. Other programs also die. Now I've too operating systems which both are not that stable. I can still do my work, but programs easily give errors, expecially internet explorer.

What to do?
- I will change the rams chips, cause I suspect there's something wrong with it.
Error 2 of coure, and I read error 4 has something to do with the memory too.
- Install an other graphic card, which I was going to do, anyway.
- Open my case, so all the heat can easiliy flow away.
Heat problems?

!!I HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM!!

Wohoo...

It turned out to be a badly placed Network card. I changed it too an another slot, and that did the job.

Tips for people who are experiencing ACPI errors, Page Fault in None Paged area, Himem.sys has detected unreliable xms memory at adress 006284EE XMS driver not installed, and system instability.

Start trouble-shooting. I removed all unnecessarily hardware. So I left the videocard, and installed windows 98. From there I start putting back all the hardware.

Thanks for reactions. Mike

Ive been experiencing the Page fault bull crap for way too long now. I even killed the partition and did a format in NTFS (in XP Pro) Now I can even instlal winXP without getting the pagefault error.
I have a P4 2.4 and an 8500LE radeon board. I have two 512ram chips, tried rotating them, using just one of em an still the same problems. As It stands right now I have a half -assed install of XP that cant load because I get the error before windows even loads. I gutted all the hardware such as nic card, audio card. Thats all I have in there. I dont really see how it could be an actual IRQ issue. I replaced the Power supply and motherboard, and video card. I am going to attempt replacing the ram as this is all I can think of. If thats not it, I will conclude that it could be the CPU itself. I have excellent cooling, BIOS is all default settings.

SPECS:
Intel P4 3Ghz
Soyo Dragon 2 MOBO
Corsair 1Gig PC4000 RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra
Soundblaster Audigy

(All these problems happen to my machine all while the computer is idle).

1. The Windows XP error "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal" happened to my new machine, it was very brief, it seems that my Audigy soundcard was not seated in the PCI slot good enough. I just took out the card and placed it back, you should all try this, especially your video card.

2. I also receive the dreaded "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" BSOD. This I have not been able to resolve yet. This happens when trying to format my harddrive within XP's recovery console. Although I do receive this error when I get the random/ daily reboots accompanied with the BCP detail code. (I'm fairly sure this is not heat related due to the fact that the room is air conditioned and all my problems happen only minutes after the computer finally boots. The temp on the CPU is only 113F degrees). This error is typical of a memory issue, I have lessened this occurance by adjusting the memory timings to:
CAS Latency = 3
Active to Precharge Delay = 8
RAS# to CAS# Delay = 4
RAS# Precharge = 4

I have tried tweaking the BIOS settings (ie. lowering my memory timings, disabling USB, upping the voltage for my RAM and AGP slot, though I have not tried disabling the APIC option), but nothing has truly helped.

Everyone having these problems should try looking for a bios update to their motherboard, be careful though since a failed bios update will totally kill your computer. The company that sold you the computer will have the correct bios updates, you cannot always trust the motherboard manufacturer because some boards are specifically built or ordered by the computer companies [DELL, Compaq, HP, etc.]. I have seen bios updates specifically for these problems, unfortunately for myself, the motherboard has jsut hit the market and no updates are available.

Random reboots and possibly other problems could be that the motherboard is shorted against the case, a way to check is to take out the motherboard and place it on cardboard, then run the computer.

I am finally fed-up with this and have ordered a computer diagnostic card and software. It will probably take a week or two for this to arrive, but if I can pinpoint these problems I will post my findings.

Good luck everyone, I'll be floating around and hopefully soon I'll have some answers.

Matt

Interesting read.
Earlier someone mentioned pirate Xp disk can cause this as well. Not true as I had a pirate copy, grabbed a real copy and the same issues have occured. The only possiblity I see now is that the mobo can be shorted in the case.
AS I mentioned I have swapped mobo, powersupply and video card.
I actually got a little further when I swapped my ATI radeon for my buddy's Nvidia Gforce3 board. However I still ended up with serious crashes and reboots about 5minutes into any 3D game.
So far the best suggestion Ive heard is to get a can of gasoline and burn this piece of --. I thought hmmm, thats a good idea.
Anyway, I am going to try your suggestion of ripping out the mobo and placing it on cardboard to see what happens. If this doesnt work, my final options are to replace the RAM (even though I feel it is highly unlikely that both my chips are toasted). And to replace the CPU itself(costly) Im still going nuts with this problem. I too will continue to update this thread if any progress is made.
P.s. the machine does seem more stable when I use on board video. Cant be irq conflict because I disabled EVERYTHING on board (not in use) as well as removed ALL cards!! I still get cronic reboot with onboard video, no irq in use except for IDE controller and on board Video.

Ok... I was also having the same problem. After a clean install of XP I was getting the hang on Mup.sys.
Very fustrating.. read sooo many pages for an answer, and tried just about everything.
There seems to be a few problems with mup.sys, and people are quoting a number of different fixes.
This page gives microsofts info on it: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310760

A few pages also suggested bad ram, resetting BIOS, removing all PCI cards, upgrading inadequate power supplies, disabling USBs: http://www.earthv.com/tips_detail.asp?TipID=63

Here's a fix which gives details on changing your BIOS ACPI config which seemed to fix the problem in some cases:

Some say go into repair mode from the XP install CD, select the drive, and rewrite your boot partition, and check the disk by typing the commands "fixboot" and "chkdsk /p" (I found some anomalies on my disk doing this, although it didn't resolve the issue for me)

As for myself.. after replacing my ram, video cards (AGP and PCI), removing all my PCI cards, changing a heap of settings in BIOS (all of which didn't help), resetting BIOS, fixing up the boot records and errors on my hdd, I finally fixed the problem.

MY FIX: I reinstalled XP over the top of itself.
Like most others, I'm not sure what happened. I left the ACPI disabled, disabled any extra peripherals in BIOS, am using a pretty standard AGP video card, and didn't have any PCI cards when I reinstalled..

So yours works now?
Simply by disabling all on board options, disabling acpi and slapping windows on top of itself has completely fixed your problems?
I will give it a try tonight and keep this thread updated. Although for some reason I dont think it is going to work for me :(

I just recently built a brand new system with the following specs:

AMD XP 2600 333MHZ FSB
1GB 400MHZ DDR (2x512MB)
2xSATA MAXTOR 80GB Drives
Audigy Ex
Powercolor 9800 Pro
LG DVD
LG DVD/RW
Logitech Keyboard
Logitech Mouse
Windows XP Pro

I'm having *all* the errors you are talking about, before bios upgrades, after bios upgrades, before windows update, after windows update, before new driver installs, after new driver installs.

I can't say how sick of seeing IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN I am it's unholy.

I'm also getting 90% of the errors you're talking of on this page - anytime - 2 minutes after boot, 10 minutes after boot, while it's sitting idle, or when it's running a game.

I also have another system:
1.9Ghz Intel
512MB SDRAM
80GB WD
Creative SB Live
Geforce 3.

That runs rock solid in Windows XP Pro

I've swapped the graphics, and audio cards out, I've swapped the ram, I've switched Keyboards, mice, I'm currently waiting on a replacement motherboard. If that doesn't fix the problem, I'm going back to Windows 2000 on the new PC. Sad but true.

try downloading xp patch win xp support pack 1 from microsoft www.microsoft.com.the error will remain no matter what hardware/software you buy. there are major flaws in xp pro and also xp home edition/server 2003 microsoft continue to dominate the computer industry yet mr gates has no means to an end in a way he gets rich we get stuffed

Well I've determined that my problem (IRQL Not Less than...blah) only occurs when I'm running Zone Alarm.

What this means, I'm not sure of, any ideas?

Ruf Nek

08/18/03
I have solved the problem 100%!!
here is the deal. If your machine was working fine before hand, and now it is giving any of these errors such as IRQ not less or equal, PFN List corrupt,Page Fault in non-paged area.
Then it is very possible that you have a ram problem.

All you will have to do is replace your ram chips!! Simply replace your ram, re-install XP and that should to it!
I battled this for 3 months!! replaced everything except for ram as I couldnt believe that I had 2 dead 512 sticks. Welp, soon as I bought a 256, the computer is running flawlessly. no question about it.

I will also add (as it was deleted again, someone is pruning this thread very drastically)
Relying on those Ramtesting applications is a waste of time. I tried numerous ones for lenghty periods of time and they turned up zero errors.
As I stated, the ram was the culprit.

Again, all this only applies IF the machine was working fine BEFORE hand, and nothing changed since the errors..
If you changed something, and then recieved these errors, my fix may not be applicable.

I have the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL problem, but
it only seems to be confined to one hard drive partition (I have 10), which is 15GB, and NTFS formatted. I know there is a file system error, but as soon as I get to 25% on a scan, it reboots. It only seems to occur when something is scanning the hard drive (As in looking for a pre-installed programs directory)

I bought an 80GB Western Digital Hard Drive, and it's all be happening since then.

Try this:

In the BIOS:
Advanced > Chip Configuration
- SDRAM Configuration > from By SPD to User Define
- SET SDRAM CAS Latency > from 2.5T to 2T. (apparently 2.5T is quite unstable...?)

Works fine for me after 6 months of search a solution, believe me, it`s the solution

I've been getting these usbport.sys and irq_less_than_equal errors too. Seems interesting enough that this happens occasionally. Somewhere random between 2 hours and 3 days. I can now tell when my computer is about to die when my 3D game starts flashing. That's if I'm in front of the computer at that time. Other times, it just fails when the machine is pretty much idle (just handling a few torrents and managing instant messenging clients).

However, when I get these errors, and if I can reboot right away (read: I'm at the computer), I can run MemTest86 to check the memory. The interesting thing is that *sometimes* the program reports and error. Somewhere in the area of 192MB or so. Since I'm using NForce2Ultra, I'm not sure how the dual channel memory works. In case it uses striping, then I wouldn't know which stick of ram the error occurs on...if on any of them at all. However, after I switched the ram around, it still dies...and the error is at the same location (when they do appear)...192MB. Therefore, I'm wondering if it's the motherboard overheating.

I've had a system where water was spilled on it (my friend kicked my watercooler setup in the middle of his sleep). It randomly crashed thereon after. Couldn't tell why this was so for half a year...until recently, I realized that three large capacitors next to my CPU had their tops open. Asked some EE friends, and lo and behold, "that's a BAD thing."

So I'm wondering if it's the heat causing the problem...I think I'm going to try and run CPUBurn for a few hours and see how that goes. Maybe another 3D benchmark while I'm at it.

FYI, I don't have that IRQ sharing on my GeForce3, and this is running on an Athlon 2500+ with two sticks of Corsair XMS PC3200 CAS2 (not the super expensive one, the one cheaper than that) 512MBx2. These were the OEM ones with the silver-platinum heat sinks (highly doubt they're made of that material, of course). Maybe the sticker on those RAM sticks cause the over heating? I'm not sure.. The ram is running at PC2700 right now for equivalent bus speed to my 2500+. I'm also using the SN45G from Shuttle...and the ram is located on the other side from the fan. The GeForce3 is a 64MB version from Gainward. (this was salvaged from my old computer...and it had its share of the water when the computer was turned on...but don't think it's this card though)

Hopefully someone gets some inspiration from this. And hopefully this queues someone in as to what some of the problems are. I'm sure everyone has a different problem with their setup, but one step at a time. =)

I tried the RAM CAS latency down from 2.5 to 2 solution mentioned by karac 09/08/03. It seems to do the trick. I am in the proces of running "Hot CPU tester Pro 4 lite" It is on the 3rd round and going strong. Before, it would BSOD after/during the 2/8 tests in the first round.

Solution for anyone with processr.sys and NvidiaTNT2 probs. I came apon this after over 1.5 years of XP freezing during Bryce and Poser renders, Bluescreens anytime the cosmic joker passed by my way and lots of work going to waste.

To say I'm peeved, is an understatement. So here is how I resolved it!

Get an empty Harddrive, install Windows 2000 onto it and piggieback your XP harddrive onto the back.

Remove all the files you need from your XP onto your 2000, wipe your XP.

Format your drive about 10 times (just to be sure), get a priest arounf and have them do the ol' exorcist stuff over it. Now put 2000 onto the drive.

Piggieback in reverse now and get back all the stuff you need. Reinstall any programs you require.

Now, stay the hell away from XP.

I am considering suing Microsoft over the time I spent from upgrading to now. The stuff I've missed out on!

Longhorn!! LOL, you not gonna fix your last rabbit first!!

98 se and 2000 all the way from here.

Lindows too!

I have a AMD 1.4 with A 64MB GF2GTS. I haven't changed/added hardware within the last 6 months. As I was playing BF1942, my machine just rebooted itself. Thinking it may be virus related, I tried to log back on and do a virus check. I ran fixwelch.bat and fixblast.exe, but neither virus was on my PC. Every 10 minutes it would reboot until finally it wouldn't let me back into windows, even in safe mode, even from the CD. After about 50 power ons/offs, it'll let me back into Windows for about 3 or 4 reboots. I'm trying now to re-install XP Pro on top of itself, but I get BSODs during the install. Safe mode still hangs at mup.sys. Booting from CD will stop before I can even repair. After all this, I'm gonna try to replace my memory. If anyone has ideas, let me know please.

I'm getting the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSoD (Stop Error), and it's being caused by SCSIPORT.SYS. I have a Western Digital 60GB HD, and an OEMPlus version of Windows XP Home. I get the error when I right-click on Local Disk (C:) and choose Properties. I think the same problem occurs once in a while, randomly, as well. I've found that my problem is in mobo, i've read some reviews and every one say that ECS ak7sa mobo gets unstable at 133/133 MHZ frequency's, the best solution i've found was an unofficial bios that allows me to put 124/124MHZ, this way my processor works at 1300MHZ instead of the normal 1400MHZ. Until now no errors happened. Not the perfect solution but it's better than the 1050MHZ it was workink before.

I had the problems you all are having:

irq error
scsi error
some other system file error
driver unloaded before something error (very annoying)

I reinstalled XP 10+ times over a few months, mainly because I was trying to beat Warcraft 3 and then Homeworld 2 and I didn't want to bebug it while in the middle of a campaign.

After I reinstalled XP 2x in a day, I decided to try out some suggestions and reinstalled with only the basics, nvidia drivers for nforce mb (a7n8x dlx), nvidia drivers for ge force ti ?2? 200 (or 4200?) and of course windows. I played my game (HW2 and it died later that night 4 times and after the 4th time (blue screens everytime), it wouldn't reboot. I reinstalled again and moved my scsi card one slot down (main drive is scsi so can't remove card) with only my vid and scsi scards in.

I installed the OS, my video drivers (not XP compatability certified), DirectX 9 and my nvidia drivers. The VERY FIRST time I rebooted my comp froze at Mup.sys. I had a fit and installed Win2k and I haven't had a blue screen or a game dump of any type.

My theory: Video or Directx 9 incompatibility problem. I was too fed up to isolate it anymore but I would bet money it has to do with my Nvidia drivers and/or my Dx9 drivers.

Good luck all.

My error occurs once i try installing from a Windows Xp with Service Pack 1 cd. and there is nothing i can do, cuz my computer wont boot, cuz i also have a NTFS error, and a NTLDR error, so windows doesnt even boot. thats what started the problem in the first place, i tried useing the REPAIR function from the instal cd, and BAM, the -- hit the fan. ive removed uneccessary hardware, ive dissable all ACPI features in bios, ive moved PCI cards to different slots, but still, the -- still smells funny. any ideas to solve any one of my errors? It's amazing that I made it all the way to the bottom of this message thread. It shows how unbelievably pissed off I am that my computer blue screens at least 3 times everyday when I'm playing games or even when I'm doing nothing at all. I've written down all the errors I've seen and the list is pretty long: irq not less or equal, usb.sys, page fault in non paged area, nv4_disp.dll, nv4_mini.dll, cmaudio.sys, win32k.sys, ..etc. It goes on and on.

Something that sparks my curiosity are the number of messages from people saying they have an Nvidia graphics card, a usb mouse, and onboard sound by cmedia. This is the exact configuration I have. I used to have an ATI 8500 and switched to nvidia because somebody told me the problem was ATI. That worked for a little bit but now I get more blue screens than ever before. They usually happen when I'm playing 3d games but sometimes they happen when I'm browsing the web or shutting down. I also have an ASUS motherboard.

I am extremely frustrated. My next attempt at a fix will be to disable the onboard sound since some people said that fixed their problem. I will be back with my findings...

Jason,
I'm getting the exact driver errors you're getting: nv4_disp.dll, nv4_mini.dll, win32k.sys.

What is your exact system setup?
I have an
Athlon XP 2600
Asus VIA K7V600
GeForce 4 4200 TI 8X AGP
512MB of Black Diamond Mem
Two 30GB Maxtor ATA 133
Verbatim (LiteOn) CDRW

I've run into the same problems with XP Home, XP Pro, XP Pro pirated, Win 2000 pirated.

The most success I've had is in updating my nvidia card to the newest drivers 5.3.0.3.

I'm going to go try each of the options suggested here that I have yet to try. (I've been working on this problem for three months.)

I have switched Memory, switched graphics cards, turned off CD-Rom, used one hard drive, changed CPU VCore and updated each Windows to the max.

I'm really tempted to go back to Linux and see if this still happens...

You may not need to make bios changes. The driver irql not less or equal error problem is caused by an error in the driver. Just find out which driver it is and which hardware component its for. then try reinstalling that components driver from the installation cd. If that doesnt solve the problem then get to the manufacturers website and check if there are newer drivers for your hardware. in most cases there are newer drivers if u r getting errors. this works 90% of the time.
:) :)
jason

12/15/03
I have the most recent drivers for everything. That's the first thing I did when troubleshooting. I recently tried getting a new Enermax 430 watt power supply and a Belkin AVR/Backup battery to see if the blue screens and instant reboots could be caused by bad power. Neither helped.
Galen - Here's my system setup:
XP Pro
Asus P4T533
Nvidia GForce FX5600
512 MB 4200 232 pin RDRAM
160 MB Western Digital 7200rpm 8MB cache

I disabled the USB bus and ethernet card since I heard they might be causing problems. The only thing I'm left with is replacing the memory and motherboard. The problem is nobody but online sites supply 232 pin RDRAM. I don't want to buy it unless I know it fixes the problem. I'm also thinking if I'm going to the extent of buying new RAM I might as well just get a new motherboard too and junk the whole ASUS one. I'm never buying ASUS again. I've always had intel motherboards and have never run into problems like this before.

Jason, u can try ur ram with memtest (www.memtest86.com), i suggest running it min 6hrs.
1 error or more: switch ur ram.

I have this problem (paging, irql) since i switched from win2k (0 problems) to winXpPro. Tried 3 graphics cards, removed all pci cards, that all didnt help.
I guess i go back to w2k, but before it ill try antivirus.
If it wont help too, next thing ill do is buiyng new mobo/cpu, cause I dont have time to fight with soo stupid problems next half year.

So everyone here has problems with NVIDIA cards on windows xp, right?

Me too.. If i try to play a game, for example fifa 2004, i play for 5-20 seconds and then it throws me back to windows or gives me a bluescreen saying PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and mentions nv4_disp.dll.

I have tried two different cards: GeForce fx 5200 (Asus V9520 Video Suite GeForce FX 5200) and GeForce 3 (Elsa Gladiac 920).
I have tried different driver versions for the cards and also for my motherboard k7n2 delta-ilsr, which i bought recently and which with i have had nothing but a problem after another..

Has anyone found any solution for this kind of matter?

jason

I ran memtest for 12 hours but it reported everything is ok. I finally fixed the problem by buying an Intel D875PBZ board and DDR 333 Ram and putting my pentium chip in there. It could either have been a problem with my Rambus memory or Asus motherboard. I don't care though, all I can say is that I will NEVER buy an Asus motherboard again. This was the first time I've had problems like this and I've bought at 20 Intel motherboards in my lifetime. It says something about Asus when the first motherboard I buy from them has these problems.

Had the error message mentioned in connection with CMUDA.SYS, the C-Media Audio Driver. Specifically, UT2003 would crash at the menu screen. It played fine previously, this problem just started yesterday.

Removed suspect program '7-Max', defragmented my pagefile completely with Diskeeper 8, installed the latest C-Media drivers (below), and disabled Xear 3D in the C-Media control panel, and the blue screens have stopped.

HI guys,
Like most of you, Im having the "IRQL not_...f**ing problem".
Let me say I am totaly blind here. I ve read hundreds of forum topics, and dozens of situations and different opinions are reported.
Once again it seems that "mighty" Windows is tricking on us all.
I am not exactly a computer expert, so I am really not that confident with hardware issues.

How can a "poor" windows user deal with this problem, when all professional guys are really lost with this??

Just to add my problem: All this IRql question started when I got the Blaster virus.

Possible solution

After another hundreds reading, I learned about two possible solutions for this IRQL ERROR:

a) In the BIOS -advanced - Chip configuration:

SDRAM configuration: from By SPD to User Define
and
SET SDRAM CAS Latency: from 2.5T to 2T

b) In the BIOS:

disable HT (Hyper Threading)

Hope it fits...

SOLUTION!!!

This should work for everyone. I won't go into why it works, but there's a 90% chance it will work for everyone!

Restart your computer, and go into the BIOS setup. DISABLE nearly everything! USB Ports, parallel ports, onboard sound, onboard modem's and network cards, un-used pci slots, un-used ide channels. Everything with exception of your graphics card. Restart with your XP disc in the CDROM (you must be able to boot from CD-Rom) RE-Install XP, deleting any partitions, and formatting your hard-drive (don't take the quick option) continue to install XP. Once you're up and running XP. restart your computer, go back into BIOS, and start re-enabling your components (start with network cards and modems and finish with the USB ports) Enable one thing, then do a restart, go into XP and check all is well, then move onto the next thing. I GUARANTEE this will work on 90% of all machines.

The P4S8X solution to "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".

I have a ASUS P4S8X motherboard with an "onboard soundcard". And this was my problem. Everytime i tried to play Battlefield 1942 the bluscreen appeard. So I went out into my "BIOS" and DISABLED the "onboard soundcard" wich was on "Auto". Now I dont have any sound, but rather that then getting my computer shut down every 15 minute. And I will offcourse buy another soundcard.

(Tip: This only happend when I used my computer to the max. It was really working hard. In some cases I have heard that "Norton" is the main cause to this problem. I will uninstall Norton and install AVG instead.)

Hope you'll figure it out!

Well tried everything and I gave up two months ago, but now ( i´m on holydays ) I coming back in the ring, I have an XP 2200 and an asus a7v8x-x like everybody always appeared blue screen and IRQ_NOT...etc,etc, etc,. What I did to fix this problem is increase the VCORE to 1,75 ( obviously taking care temperature under 45 C). the VCORE can be change in the BIOS.
I hope this would be useful for you.

Hello.
I've been having the same (or very similar) problems, the IRQL BSOD with nvidia driver files being most common.
I have a Home PC with:
XP 2200+
Geforce4 Ti
Soundblaster Audigy
Onboard Ac sound
An USB mouse (with adapter for the ordinary port)

What really bugs me is that I'm not allowed to open the machine (voids warranty), I've had it in for repair at least 5 times, and they have changed the processor, which helped for a couple of months, but lately they have blamed drivers, reinstalled them and after a few weeks the problems are back.

I av experiencing these problems when I play games, such as Neverwinter Nights, Homeworld 2, Star Wars KOTOR and other relatively new games.

If you come up with a solution, please email me at arnehed@telia.com.

Thanks in advance.

i too have experienced the same problem with u guys and tried everything from upgrading my nvidia graphic card driver to my onboard soundcard driver ,.and (finalllyy) i have solved the problem..it turned out that my PC has overheated even though my casing and CPU fan are working properly(it seems that whenever i play 'heavy' games e:g,max payne, fifa,StarwarsLKOTOR,etc the pc tends to overheat). so what i did was i removed the case put a room fan/portable air conditioner and point it inside the case.,and switched it on whenever i play games and thankfully i haven't experienced any of the Blue Screen (yet)..to all of u who had encountered the BSOD while playing games or using computer to the max, u might want to try this solution before replacing hardwares or formatting windows..

I had a similar problem with my comp. It was
DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
***ADRESS BFD28236 base at FFCC9000, DataStamp 3dc24536 cmuda.sys

after more than a mounth, i finaly found drivers for my via motherboard matsonic MS8147CR VIA Appollo KT400, sound card CHIPSET VT8235 on the following page http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=69
URL: http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/audio/comboaudio_A1u390a.zip
check your motherboard model, and integrated modules. Best way to do that is with AIDA32 - Enterprise sistem information tool. I know that I'm advertising now, but whoever made this program should be given a Nobel prise :)
if you have same problem as I did, or a similar one, this program will tell you all about your configuration and the location where you can download necessary drivers. Only thing you have to recognise is what file is cosing the problem, which is easy, and second, to find out what hardware is using this file. than, just download drivers for exactly your chipset.
glad if I could help

Thanks to all that post their solutions. It helped me
a lot.

MY SOLUTION was to change the RAM speed in the BIOS.
It was set on 'Auto', I did set it on 266MHz manually.
Since then I have no crashes at all when I use 3D
games.

My conclusion:
This is more an harware problem rather than a software
problem.
It is a hard problem to solve, it requires patience
and a step by step plannification work. Writte down

the action you have taken and the one you will take
(this forum contains a lot of different possibilites
of actions - select the one that are relevant for you
and rank these). This will help you greatly to solve
the problem. Otherwise you will forget which action
you took or not and be finally totaly lost.

My specs:
AMD motherboard ASUS A7V8X-X
GeForce FX 5200

Lets figth the devil called
"DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"!!

Hi,

I've just bought a:
shuttle SN45G
XP3200
2 x Crucial 512mb 400Mhz dimms
Maxtor 120Gb Hdd
& am using a Geforce3 card (will upgrade to 9600XT next pay day!).

I put it all together last night, but XP won't install ;[
Lots of blue screens (irql, paged in nonpaged etc...), frooze a few times...in short a pain in the @rse.
Each time it seemed to get a bit further, after trying various settings. I'm convinved it's because of all of the onboard bits & bobs (5.1 audio, Networking, USB2, Firewire, Optical in/out), but can't find a way to dissable this to do a minmal install.
Got a BIOS update to try tonight, some different RAM (266MHz borrowed from a work PC) & a Gefocre2 MX400...Also I read that USB mice can cause the problem, so I'll be swapping that too!

Anyway, I'm sure I'll get it working (or go mad trying)...Will post back with results, hopefully from a working shuttle!

Hi all. I had the same problem and after trying to solve by myself, i send the pc to 1 professional. Finally the main board was bad ... there isnt now another compatible board for my processor so i had to purchase a new main board, new processor and new memory ... hope that all of you dont have to do the same.

Jeeez

got my system working (finally). After much faffing around in the bios, I got XP to install by underclocking the 3200XP to an "1100XP". As soon as I was patched & updated, went back in to try & boast the cpu to it's normal level..the result...WON'T BOOT!! Falls over just prior to login screen (or mup.sys in safe mode).
Now finally have it running stably at 2500XP level (333 FSB). Not happy about this as I expected to get at least the minimum spec out of the processor & RAM (i.e. 400MHz FSB & 3200XP).

I updated the bios to the most recent ver. bu tsame problems...Has anyone got any ideas on what I can do to get performane up?

Wow...

I sure wish people around here would get this problem.. I could make a lot of money repairing these things! :)

But since i have never seen the problem myself, i cannot do anything about it. No suggestion is better than a bad suggestion, take your computers in and get them looked at by someone who knows what they're doing ( not trying to be rude, but really.. is all this frustration worth it saving a dime ? i myself would gladly pay a couple bux to have a perfect running machine )

Hi, i just read all of the messages here..
And my conclusion is that it has something to do with which memory u use..
I had the following:
Mobo: Asus A7V600
Cpu: Amd Athlon Xp 3000+
Mem: 2x512mb DDR Pc 3200
Grfxc: Geforce Fx 5600 256mb DDR
2*60gb Ide
2*160gb SATA

I got constant bluescreens doing different things, sometime installing an app och just surfin the net.
I checked the Asus website, and found out that my memory wasn't in their supported list of pc3200 400 memorys..There were some Samsung but the numbers on the mem and on the chip wasn't the same..
So i tried to use 2 older memorys that i hade in my old com, 2*256mb DDR PC2100 Samsung mem..
And now it's been running fine..
I guess it doesn't matter which older mem u use because there are no compatiblelist for more than pc3200 mems..
So i think this Bluescreen issue is memory related...

Best Regards..
A.M

Blaine, I think you'll find that most of these computers are bought from 'professionals', I know your trying to help and it is appreciated - but unless these are guaranteed sheriffs out these in this computer cowboy world I wouldn't recommend it.
Microsoft call centre staff asking if you 'turned it off and turned it on' and Time computers who pump their gear so full of illegal data trackers and never check up on you after they have their credit agreement.

Never mind the local 'community' shops.

I still have the prob, but I downloaded "Deep blue" into my hardrive and told it if it didn't at least hold it together a bit better I'd kick it's ASS!!!

Nobody got a solution for this yet?
Microsoft must have had enough 'feedback updates' to resolve this..

..oh yeah, it'll be in Longhorn Servicepack 101
