When disconnecting my modem after using IE or Outlook Express I receive a warning box labeled "BackWeb Shutdown" with the message "the parameter is incorrect. I never received this error before I downloaded an update of McAfee Anti-Virus software.

How do I correct this or eliminate the error?

The BackWeb agent is the engine that controls the news and information updates for your subscribed channels (Active Desktop).
If you dont use it, or dont know how this program got onto your computer you can delete it as follows:
Go to the Start menu and select Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Select Backweb and click "Remove".

Hope this helps, if not, post back.

Niels.

DearNiels,

When you go to the Add/remove Programs>
The Backweb agent (Activsurf) is not listed.

This means you have to go deeper into Windows ME to remove it.
This must be worthwile because the program uses
(wastes) about 6Mb of RAM memory.

Does anyone know how to prevent the Backweb agent from starting ?

Niels

If backwebagent is not shown in the list of add/remove programs you can try this to prevent it from startup:
Go to Start --> Run --> type "msconfig" in the box"
Select the tab "Start-up" and uncheck the mark at the program Backweb.
Restart your computer.
Although the program is still on the computer when you do this, at least it doesnt start when you boot your pc. I ll look up the registrykeys later to remove the program permantly.

Niels.

I'm having the same trouble with BackWeb Shutdown. I have tried the both "Add & Remove" & "msconfig" and no luck.

What should I try now?

Jacky

I just uninstalled the BackWeb from my computer (Add/Remove programs) and the error message didn't show up again. The system resource doesn't drop that much as before.
Thanks,
Jacky

PS: I think the BackWeb is wasting our memory. =)

i took my pc home for the holidays and my brother was looking at porn sites. when i came back to school and hooked it back up i noticed all these porn sites keep popping up. I looked in my task manager and i noticed a BackWeb Agent that i've never seen before. could he have gotten it from one of these sites and could that be causing these sites to keep popping up? also, i have ME for an operating system.

Does a person "need" this backweb? We are having backweb errors pop up constantly, saying it is going to shut down now, and to check our tcp/ip. I called Hp and they had me put in a code in dos to see if I got the listing there that I should if tcp/ip was properly installed. And I did. But I still get Backweb errors. What exactly 'does' back web do?
Thankyou for any help,

I was also getting multiple errors relating to Backweb Agent, and followed Niels' advice to go to Add/Remove Programs. "Backweb" was listed. I removed it and all has been WAY better. Less hang ups, less system resources used. Thanks all for this stream of info. (By the way, I'm also running ME. If anyone knows, is this the only version of Windows to use Backweb?)

If you install Data Lifeguard with a new Western Digital hard drive It may install a small version of Backweb with it : Go to "Run" in the Start menu and type, msconfig ,and go to startup and look for a line that has both program names in it,, if it is there, you don't have to uncheck it, you can just go to Add\Remove programs and remove the Data Lifeguard program, this should take care of the problem

hope this helps some of you

I have the same problem in Backweb and I tried everything to get rid of it. I'm using XPhome version and it seems that the bugger came pre-installed with the PackardBell machine that I bought. nothing radical has happened so far, except that it keeps telling me that the LITEINST.exe is corrupt at start-up, I have a vague suspicion this is due to my Zonealarm, firewall application. Tried mailing those guys at Backweb but all I got was a message that they do NOT recommend the program for XP, then why the heck dod they preinstall it huh?

The included uninstaller gives me 'unsufficient rights to remove' LOL I'm a single user and I don't have a network installed - Bummer! So if anyone can help me out on how to remove this 'nice little present' please let me know?

Hello:

My system has just become very unstable (frequent lock-ups and/or drops when connected to Web) I have simultaneously started getting BackWeb Agent related errors.

This system is several years old, and we have not added any new software for many months. Somehow the offending software had to have been downloaded and installed from the internet without my knowledge or approval.

The problem is that Backweb does not appear in either the Add/Remove or msconfig programs.

Several questions:

1. Any suggestions as to how to remove this program, and

2. Who owns the BackWeb Agent?

The reason for the latter question may be of broad interest to the group. I have been fighting this kind of thing for several years (as we all have.) The legal hook, that actually works according to no less authorities than the legal counsels of ATT and AOL is that the unauthorized storage of code/data/bits of any kind on your computer constitutes an illegal taking of your property and is trespassing.

This is how AOL has successfully taken on spammers.

That's the reason that finding the copyright holder of the offending pieces is so critical. The simple fact is, that I don't care how it got there, or what it does. It is their property, it is illegally taking my property. They have a legal obligation to get it off my property, or face legal action. A pain in the kiester, but I have found that it really gets the offending companies' attention.

BackWeb is foistware. We have stopped purchasing Western Digital drives because of the deception they've used to install this pest on your machine.

You'll have to ferret out programs, links, and shortcuts from all over your machine. Of course, no uninstall is provided. Get rid of the 'BackWeb' folder and the 'LifeGuard' folder. Then find the annoying .lnk file it hides in the All Users / Startup folder.

Thanks for all the excellent information. I am glad to know there are people out there with the same problems as me. I deleted my backweb agent just a few minutes ago. My one biggest fear is what will it do to my computer. Everything is awesome. But you know one thing I found wrong with my computer is that in msconfig. There was not a backweb option. It doesnt load right away. I am on a LAN connection. So I think it starts later so you cant track it. I think the company is terrible and illegal. Thanks for all the juicy info guys!!

I've been trying to put frontpage2000 on my computer, it pops up that the Backweb agent is running and that it is reccomended to stop running all programs to proceed. So, After scouring google, I found this forum. I tried the msconfig suggestion as well as the control panel. I could not locate the program on either. I found the base folder for BW in the windows program folder, so I deleted it. When I went to permenantly delete it from the hard drive, it wouldn't let me. ALso, the BW icon is NOT showing up on my windows toolbar. I had no idea it was even there. Any suggestions? thanks!! :-)

Most websites have spyware services attached to them, so when you hit a website, spyware such as gator, gain, xupiter, bde, backweb, etc. are automatically downloaded to your computer without you ever knowing. Go to Yahoo do a search on Spybot and download the free software. I wouldn't hit the internet without it.

One more thing. HP runs backweb services with an original install. I've had a client who received a file error with a number. After clearing out most of the backweb files with Spybot, I had him do a search for backweb and found the file causing the error on bootup. Deleted the file and his computer booted up without any issue.

GOOD LUCK!!

I got a new Western Digital hard drive and I caught backweb trying to run with my firewall, I knew I didn't need it and here's how I got rid of it. Ctrl+Alt+Delete > shut down backweb > search from start button entire hard drive for backweb > delete the files and folders that appear in results. I also searched for and deleted th file DLGI (Data Life Guard Installer). If your happy with the results empty files from recycle bin. Good info is at http://www.cexx.org/dlgli.htm
Hope this helps!

HP systems come with backweb installed, It's called the HP system toolbar. It is usually at the top of the screen on XP systems.
Look in msconfig and move the colum dividers over enough to read the whole path and the HP services end with backwebagent or some variant.
disable these and watch your system speed pick up!

BackWeb Agent
I know spyware is a pretty pesky problem, and BackWeb is no exception. But I have to say that I am glad that I didn't delete it. A little under a month ago, I was just surfing along, when I received a BackWeb popup from HP. Turns out my hard drive had been recalled. We were able to send it in free of charge for a replacement before anything went seriously wrong with the computer, and so far it is working great.

My advice would be to try to find out if your PC or software manufacturers use it for critcal updates before you decide to delete it, unless it it just causing more of a problem than it's worth.

Never get DashBar though, or a BonziBuddy...that is the biggest pain to try to get rid of.

Thanks for all the info, it has been very helpful. My solution was as follows: backweb did not show up on my msconfig, however I found the file was part of the Data Lifeguard folder (provided with my new Western Digital hard drive). I disabled Data Lifeguard and the system restart worked perfectly. I then deleted the Data Lifegaurd and other backweb folders I found through my explorer - system works great. Hats off to google and newbie.

I have been fighting the backweb problem for some time I will uncheck it in the start up programs and it finds it way back even before I shut down, I also remove it from the active list
when I hit ctl.alt and delete but it manages to get back and brings some other baggage along with it. I have been sending it to the recycle
bin to remove the annoyance, but then I get a nagging search message I have to put away. I have been hesitant to delete it permenantly,or uninstall it, Do I really need it? S.O.S

You probably don't need Backweb. But, you may need a program that requires it.

The new version of F-Secure requires BackWeb to run. So if you need F-Secure then BackWeb is also required. I solved that problem by switching to grisoft.com antivirus. In fact there are several programs which require Backweb that I have chosen to not use because I don't want Backweb on my system.

Maybe the software manufactures should take note that some of us are declining their software not because of their software but the requirement for Backweb.

On the HP site is a list of computers that use Backweb for automatic updates. My Windows ME only uses the Windows update feature, not HP's, so I am more than glad to get rid of Backweb. I first noticed the name from my firewall notices and didn't know whether to let it through because it didn't look like a Microsoft or HP program, but it still seemed official.

I ran spybot (HP pavillion with xp) and dumped 86 backweblite messages and blocked backweb. On reboot i got error messages, so i contacted hp online and asked for help. they had me run msconfic and uncheck the hpcenter program toolbar and restart.
Upon restart a window pops up instucting you to undo the changes, it also has a box to check to say don't show message again. check the box, click ok and dump the hpcenter shortcut into the trash. restart your computer. You can then delete the hp center program from your hard drive under c:\program files\backweb. Depending on your installaton you may have backweb lite or the full version. If you have the full version you can change the settings and use it for yourself if you are doing e-business or have a website. see ya later backweb...

What I found that was simple was to go to start- Find - Files or folders and type in Backweb from there about 20 files popped up in that window so i followed the folder path of the files it was c:\cpqs\backweb so i went to my computer clicked on c drive and found the folder labled cpqs and back web was right there I deleted both of the folders containing backweb. Before this i tried "msconfig" and the add/remove programs and neither contained backweb. So try following the folder path! Hope this helps someone. Email if you have questions! Erin

Backweb is a huge deal and the info they collect is worth zillions. Every one of us who comes across this page is one in a thousand who have it on their computer, only we don't want it. They are now actually listed on the stock exchange as a legit company and obviously the persons who created this legal worm are making millions. I am not in any way connected with spybot, but every single one of you should get it, you won't believe who else is spying on your moves. It's free, but suck it up and send the guy a donation, he deserves it!!!

DEFAULT, SOFTWARE,MICROSOFT, WINDOWS, CURRENT VERSION
under this section there a sub section named run- click this and delete all content EXECPT default that appears on the right hand side.

REBOOT your system then delete all backweb files.

If you have sygate firewall got into your appications there and block LOGITECH DESKTOP MANAGER this will stop it accessing again.

Great that I found your web page because now I see that I'm not the only one who's haveing problems with Backweb. Those bastards!

First off I removed the spyware with Ad-aware and I had no problems but then I tried Spybot, because it was so highly recommended, and it found hundreds more pieces of spyware that Ad-aware had missed.

Unfortunately now I'm haveing the same problem as most of the people here with the "frcom.dll missing" pop up. I've read some really good suggestions on this forum and I'm going to try them out this weekend.

I'll report back and let you know how it went.

I found this thread via Google. My problem was that Windoze Explorer was crashing.

Spybot S&D did not find the Backweb application--evn though they were present-- but I discovered that Backweb is part of the Logitech Messenger program.

I was easily able to uninstall Logitech Messenger and all seems well thus far.

So if anyone else is having the same problem, I hope they find this thread--it was very helpful!
