I've got a 2150 Solo Gateway laptop that was working great until one day it just stopped charging the battery. Don't know why. I've had a lot of people using my computer and whatnot so who knows if any settings have been changed. could that be it? Or is it just that my battery is gone. What makes me wonder is that it was working fine and then just gave up suddenly. Thanks for your help. P.s. I don't get to check this board very often so if you have any advice could you please email it to andysapora@hotmail.com Thanks, that way I'll be sure to get any ideas you all may have. Thanks again. There is one main reason to buy a Gateway, Dell, or other major dealer computer -- Service. You can get better prices building your own or looking for a sale at one of the Discount Office Supply places. So if you are going to get a Gateway computer they owe you the support.

Call them and bug them. If they won't help then call the President of the company. He recently sent an email to every customer in their active support list apologizing for their previously bad support and promised better in the future. See if he is willing to live up to his promise.

As a company, I bought 45 Solo 2150's in the Spring of 2000. Everything went well until Spring of 2001 when suddenly approx. 25 of the laptops batteries have just given up and stopped taking charge. I've called Gateway several times to complain, an even though we have a 3 year on-site warranty, the batteries only have a 1 year warranty on them. So, we have spent about $2500 on batteries since Spring 2001. I say go with Dell.

I too bought a Gateway Solo laptop in the Spring of 2000, and by June of 2001 the battery had quit working. I called and complained to Gateway, and they gave me the same 1-year-warranty-these-things-happen story, and then offered me a new battery for a low $100. This was after having to replace the floppy, CD, and hard-drive within that same year. In the future my business will go elsewhere...

I also purchased a Gateway Solo 2150 in May of 2000. Six months after I purchased the battery died...suddenly. Gateway replaced it because it was under the 1 year warranty. Exactly 12 months and 1 day later, the replacement battery Gateway gave me died. I have searched for a replacement battery for the 2150 on the internet, and I must say, there are very limited resources from what I have found.
I even noticed that on the Gateway website in the Accessory Store, they do not have a battery listed for the 2150. When I e-mail their customer service, the only response I ever get is the automated canned response that absolutely does not answer my question...Is there a Solo 2150 battery available at the Gateway Accessory Store, and if so, why is it not showing on the battery page?

I am on my 3rd battery which has died only after 6 months..there is obviosly something very wrong here. Some companies will re-pack existing batteries by taking them apart and repacking them..does anybody know of such a company?

Had my 2150 less than a year and the battery quit. Was able to get a replacement battery, but it did not pick up a charge through the laptop , to work. Of course we called the service center AGAIN, but was put off by the service rep... beacuse the left(orange) light on the front had lit up..even only briefly, that the battery was probably no good. And that the year warranty had expired... so too bad. So it didn't matter that they had sent a bad battery. I have seen on ebay that some one was selling dozens of gateway 2150 batteries, that he claimed needed to have the lithium battery replaced. So what is the deal, why are they using bad batteries...and or why is the system not recharging ones that are usuable?

Sorry to seem like a broken record, but I too have a Solo 2150 and my battery doesnt' work correctly. It will take a full charge, but when I try to run from the battery, it will run down slowly at first and then when it gets to about 65% it starts to go down more quickly.

Wow i never realized so many other people have had the same problem. my battery stopped charging like 6 months after i bought it. I got another battery but that too now has stopped charging. I am looking for the batery online at stores and so far i found one at
http://www.batterybase.com/laptops/gateway/solo2150.htm
but it costs $269.

Try going to www.mundocorp.com. They support GW2K laptops. Batt # BATTSL215-LI is $159.00

I looked at the website mentioned above( www.batterybase.com) and the actual cost of the battery I needed was $299. I couldn't swallow that cost, so I tried to call Gateway. Apparently all of the nagging you guys did worked! :) Gateway has batteries on sale for the 2150 at $99 apiece.

04/20/02
Wow. Now I know why it was so hard to find a replacement battery! Thanks for all the info. I too have a Solo 2150 whose battery died one year after I bought it. Will be calling Gateway tomorrow...thanks Gregg. :)

04/23/02
Not so fast. I called Gateway several times today and was told the batteries are actually on backorder and have been for some time now. The current back order date is "at least" 05/15 but may be even longer. Bottom line is that they will quote it for $99 but you may not have it for a long long time.
Ken S

04/25/02
Just to update anyone who comes by here. I also have a dead 2150 due to the battery and decided to call Gateway from what I've seen here. Yes they did give a $99 quote. But said due to supplier issues that 5-28-02 would be the earliest they could ge me one which is ordered today (4-25-02). He did say it may take longer, the date he quoted was earliest they "may" be able to get it shipped.

Don't know a lot about the Gateway Laptops, but if they use Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, my guess is that the internal circuit board, which is there to control charging etc. has failed, or has switched off the power due to battery voltage going too low, in order to protect the cells. Each Lithium Ion cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6v as opposed to NiCad and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) cells whose nominal voltage is 1.2v. The Li-Ion cells should not be discharged lower than 3.0v, and the circuit will switch off the pack at that voltage. The irony is that if the pack is switched off, the cells continue to self-discharge, and go below 3.0 volts anyhow.

I have a Battery repacking business in Queensland, Australia. Our experience has been that in about 5 out of 10 cases, the cells are OK, but the circuit board is faulty.
If you have a regulated power supply, and can correctly identify the positive and negative contacts on the battery (usually the first and last in the row of contacts) apply a small charging current no greater than 1/10 the capacity of the battery, (if the pack says for example, 10.8 volts 2600mAh, the charging current should be no more than 260 milliamps)for 30 to 60 minutes. The circuit board will sometimes switch back on as the voltage increases above the minimum. Sometimes it is necessary to open the pack and apply the current directly to the cells, bypassing the circuit board altogether.

This info is probably academic to most on this message board, but it could explain why the packs fail suddenly.

SAME PROBLEM - NEED NEW APPROACH!
Does anybody know what I can do?
I would hope that if Gateway made a faulty product (solo2150 circuit board) that they would owe up to it.

rechargable batteries are usually nicad and have a tendency to wear out or only accept a partial charge. What I would try before replacing at cost to you is find a small light bulb from a flashlight or a christmas bulb and connect it to the battery. Let the bulb completely drain the battery and then charge it back up twice and see if that solves the problem.

It can't be just a coincidence that so many people are having the same problem. I had the battery replaced twice so far within the 1 year period but since the 1 yr warranty has passed, they quote me $250+ for a battery. Now that I know I'm not alone, maybe its time to take a more aggessive approach. I tend to believe that Mike Grant is correct and that the 2150 has a circuit problem which they won't disclose and that it is not a problem with the battery. Maybe we have a class action against Gateway. I'll look into this option and post my findings.

I spent about four hours in the last month at the service center and on the phone with Gateway trying to solve the problem with my laptop. At first I thought it was the power supply, and then I realized it was the battery. Everything that has happened with my batteries is curiously similar to the rest of the stories I just read. Please advise regarding a class action against Gateway since it sounds like we purchased a defective product.

Best of luck with your class action Joel. I'm sure you will get plenty of support from us all.
We stand ready to back you with plenty of evidence and testimonials. I also have had technical advice, and i've been told that replacing the circuit board will cost me as much as the laptop itself. Gateway has pulled out of Australia all together, so backup service here now is very limited. I have virtually resigned myself to the fact i bought a dud. I have it on good advice though that you shouln't remove the battery from the computer, as it afords other circuit protection against power surges. But that's about all your battery is good for.

I am in Brisbane and our company Power Repackers has been repacking Lithium Ion batteries for about 5 - 6 months now. There are some batteries which are able to be repacked and some which aren't. There seems to be a battery setup issue with the Gateway and Dell batteries. I have been told that there is a part of the BIOS setup which must be reset so the battery will recalibrate. Can anyone confirm this for me? As we do not see the laptops themselves it is a bit hard for us to confirm this. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who can enlighten me.

Well, it appears that I am not the only one that is having problems with the battery on the Gateway Solo 2150. I rarely have used my laptop using the battery only. At first, I just thought that I hadn't charged it enough but now I realize that is not the case. I went through my manuals yesterday and they suggest recalibrating the battery. No where in both manuals can I find out how to calibrate the battery. I checked on Gateway's support site and they give instructions that are for a windows version of BIOS. I decided to do a bit of research and I ended up here. I am very sad to learn that there just might be nothing that I can do with it since buying a new battery might not even be a solution. I also have noticed that replacement batteries are few and far between which seems highly suspicious to me.

I pulled the battery out and put it back in and the light comes on in the front for a bit and then turns off. The first time I took the battery out, it seemed to start taking a charge but then stopped after awhile. Very frustrating. I wish now that I would have used it alot more in the beginning so that I could have sent the whole thing back.

If any of you are planning on taking any action on this, please let me know. I will be researching this as well and see what options we may have to remedy this issue.

I too have a couple of dead batteries that will not charge. One of them died on me today. The status was at 100% and in less than 5 minutes it went completely dead and would not take a charge.

I contacted tech support to find out how to recalibrate thinking this might fix my problem, however in order to recalibrate the battery must be able to take a charge.

Any how for those that can still charge, here are the instructions for recalibrating.

How to recalibrate the battery on a Gateway Solo 2150!

1. Plug in the AC adapter.

a. Allow the battery to charge until the battery charge icon turns off, showing that the battery is fully charged.

b. After the battery charge light or the icon turns off, unplug the AC adapter.

2. Turn on or restart your portable computer.

3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

4. In Control Panel, double-click the Power Management icon.

5. In the Power Management Properties dialog box, click the Power Schemes tab.

6. On the Power Schemes tab, in the Settings for Always On power scheme box, in the Running on batteries column:

a. In the Turn off monitor list, click Never.

b. In the Turn off hard disks list, click Never.

c. In the System standby list, click Never.

7. Let the battery drain until your portable computer reaches hibernation and turns off.

8. Plug in the AC adapter. Restart your portable computer.

9. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, double-click the Power Management icon. In the Power Management Properties dialog box, re-enter your power savings settings to the desired level.

Note: Steps 3 through 6 prevent your portable computer from entering sleep mode. These steps also allow the battery to drain faster.

Well I too have a dead battery from a Solo 2150. I took it apart and found out that the batteries inside are Panasonic CGR18650HM. I have the 6400mAh battery so there are 12 of the Panasonic batteries. Once I took it apart I tried charging the batteries manually (just connecting a power supply to the positive and negative ends of the batteries) and guess what... they hold a charge, perfectly. It is the bad circuitry that Gateway made that is broken. If any Electrical Engineers know what part of the circuit is broken, that would be a big help.

Here's a possible solution to our problem...

www.1001batteries.com sells an external battery pack for the Solo 2150. Because it is external, it operates completely independent from the internal charging circuit. It has its own charging circuit and its own low-power detector, all for $75. It comes with a 6-month free replacement warranty--the customer only pays for shipping.

Check out this link:

http://www.1001batteries.com/Lookup/MLP-036190.html

Seems like a much smarter idea than paying $200 for an internal battery pack that isn't going to work very long anyway. I'm going to try it.

Hi, I have a FIC 430 and I'm having trouble with my battery too :/ My laptop won't even power with the batter connected, I have to plug the AC adaptor in to get it working. Just had to add my 2 cents when I found this page while battery-shopping. I am SO glad I haven't ordered anything yet! I bought my 2150 in Feb 2000 and the battery quit on me early 2001. However, that doesn't bother me so much as I usually use the AC adaptor. But in early 2002, the CMOS battery died too; every time I turn on the machine, I have to reset the date and time! The computer shop I took it to says that Gateway won't sell batteries for this model and no one will bother with trying to replace the CMOS. I am NOT a happy camper!

I see I've been very lucky! I bought my Solo 2150 back in 2000 and it wasn't until last night that the battery went belly up.

This is odd - the charging light for the battery just switched from the scary orange to the bright green!

Thank you so much for all the input. My money is on the www.1001batteries.com Moby Power option for my away from home activities. $75 is a vast improvement over spending almost $300 for a battery that may not last more than 6 months.

My nightmare was the hard drive which crashed 13 mos after purchase, 1 mo. out of warranty. My experience was bad enough that I will never buy a Gateway again. I doubt many people will read all the way to the end of this rather long page but something you all may find interesting:

From
"If it is a Li-Ion battery it may be near the end of it's charge life. Typically a Li-Ion battery only has about 1000 re-charges before it expires. If you run your Laptop  on the mains power all the time you may ruin a perfectly good battery within 6 months. The reason is that a charge cycle is used up whether you charge it from 5%, or 99%, to it's full capacity. Each time you put on the mains it will charge, even only 1% of charging means a charge cycle is gone. It is best to run the laptop on battery power until the charge alarm goes off and then put it on mains. You can still use it while it is charging."

2150..Hmm..sounds like a familiar problem.

First, it is easy for the person who's CMOS battery died to replace the internal coin battery. It is a standard coin. You simply have to take the case apart, remove the plugged in old battery, and replace with a new one. You may have to cut and resolder the plug end onto the new battery. (NOTE: If you are going to attempt this, you have to remove the keyboard to get at some of the case screws under it). Any reputable computer service store can do this for those not technically minded. If you would like, email me and I will put together a detailed description on case dissasembly.

I am currently working on a dead battry pack also. I do believe the posting is correct on using the batteries rather than the adapter all the time. These batteries need to be "recycled" in order for them to function at capacity. I found that the internal board is producing the charge voltage at the terminals, but my pack has lost it's calibration. The re-cal feature is not available on my 2150. There is no recal function associated with the BIOS. I think gateway should provide a new BIOS for the 2150's that haven't got BIOS capability to recalibrate. At least that would separate the actual bad bateeries from those who are just in need of recal. I am currently charging my pack with a regulated supply, and if it fires up the system, I will let it run until it dies and hopefully the internal charging circuit will come back to life. I will post my efforts later.

I am going to go to the Gateway site now and see if I can update the BIOS.

I have both the 2150 and a 5300 laptop. I actually find the Gateway's to be among the most reliable laptops, and I have experience with quite a few, including Dell. There are always drives that go, regardless of laptop, desk, type, manufacturer...it is the way of the beast. Most hard drive issues that I have seen point directly to the user...including those that go dead. It is important to care for thses units, which is a reason I am a firm believer and subscriber to Norton Utilites. Peter Norton has a great reputation, and the cost of Norton Utilites certainly warrants its use rather than having to replace drives. I have hard drives that are 5 years old and run like clocks. It is good to note that if you know the drive manufacturer, not the computer maker, you can go to most of their websites and find diagnostic and repair utilites for their drives.

Folow up post...

I disassembled the battery pack for the 2150. I found 4 dead cells out of the 12 in the pack. I am currently trying to find a source for these cells. I wrote Panasonic, and they will not sell them. They are claiming it is against the law to sell Li-ion cells to anyone who is not a licensed battery pack assembler. I believe this to be untrue, as a couple sites I checked into have Li-ions for sale as individual cells, just not with the same rating as the CGR18650HM cells in the pack.

Does anyone have a source for these..better yet, anyone with dead packs want to get rid of them. I would figure that this is the problem with most of the packs, one or more of the cells is dead, which would definately cause these battery issues. Please contact me if you would like to get rid of your old battery packs. If I find a source for these cells, I am going to repair mine and see what happens. If it works, I will pass this info on.

I've been rebuilding solo 2150 packs now for about a year. Gateway Li-ion packs are not the only brand to have this problem; it's a curse on the li-ion cell. Saftey standards are very strict on these packs as far as charge current, charge voltage, temperature during charge and discharge, end of discharge cycle etc. These packs will shut down if any of these faults occur even though there is still much useful energy left in the cells. I know what goes wrong with the circuit board, I can replace dead cells with higher capacity cells as well (1600mah with 1800mah). I don't use the panasonic cells that were originally installed, I use Sony US18650GR 1800mah cells. E-mail me if your interested in having your dead packs brought back to life. I'm in Texas and can do local work with no delivery costs.

Fellows,
I have been doing some internet researching on lithium batteries. I am as the website implies, a newbie so I won't pretend to have THE answer. This info talks about lithium cells and how it is neccessary to cycle them or the result it a dead battery after 6 to 12 months. Now there well may be a problem with the solo 2150 charging circuit, but from what I read, the coincidence of abnormal lifespan kinda fits this explanation. in the url below. I am guilty of running my other laptop on AC current with the battery included, and I have noticed a loss in running time of that particular battery. Hmmm. As I am getting a solo 2150 at the end of this week, I hope that the battery trouble is avoidable with proper care. Am I grasping at straws 8^) url: http://www.buchmann.ca/Chap15-page2.asp

So, based on the explaination that i've seen, this meant the resposibility does not lie to any brand of computer but is the li-on battery that being used in the pack. So this mean we have to blame the manufacturer of the li-on battery.
Oh.. this make me feel bad as i have just made a big mistake i screw Gateway up. Thanx for all the explaination to whoever that discover out the problem of the battery.
This has taught me a new thing in life. Before blaiming anyone, we should find out the cause of the problem first.

Thanx guys. Adious.
Let me sent an email to Gateway and apologize for the mistake that i've made.

Same same here, Gateway Solo 3350 bought in Australia in 2001, suddenly the AC power light on the front does not stay on, but blinks. The power meter on the otherside, however, shows a full charge. Off AC, the computer does not turn on at all.

There is a recalibration feature in BIOS on this model, but I've tried it and it doesn't seem to work, trying it again now (manual says this is a several hour process.

Funny, I also bought the Palm M505, another dud, about the same time as the Gateway.

Is there a fix for 2150 if no calibration can be done.

Its funny to see how many people get disgruntled at not having a laptop work, and then rationalize that its the Manufacture's falut. Next time you are going to buy a laptop remember to check out the warrenty online, or to ask about it. If you don't like it then tough. Its your fault for not having the warrenty or reading. If you don't understand it talk to a lawyer. If you think its a piece of crap, research before you buy anything. Otherwise your just as stupid as the other person. If you bought it because you wanted to pay less, well then you got less, which is exactly what you deserve. So stop complaining and fix your problem.

Gateway Person . . . DROP DEAD!
You have no right to an opinion on this matter since you have not wasted TONS of money and time on the 2150.

Yes, I'm another Gateway victim who has totally lost it and would not recommend Gateway to my worst enemy. I'm waiting for a replacement system to arrive from Gateway in the next couple of days. I explained to my semi-intelligent service rep that there are tons of unsatisfied people on the net with the same problem and that Gateway should do something. I have my attorney on call to handle my personal case with them if necessary. I was wondering if anyone has done anything in the class action department. Let me know via this board or email.

Good luck and thanks for the pointers about battery cycles. I'll keep this in mind for my new Sony laptop.

"Gateway Person" isn't really a gateway person, just some wanker who stumbled upon this newsgroup, who thought he might say something inflammatory to invoke a response. Any company who guarantees a product, by law, has to back it up with action. Gateway people, or "persons" don't do this... therefore, they will suffer the consequences.. class action. Thats't how it works...and that is why "gateway person goes by the alias "gateway person".. now that's amusing.

I have an IBM 600e laptop that I bought used. After using the battery pack for a month it died. Fortunately it was still under warrenty and was replaced free of charge. The second battery pack lasted a few months more but also died; this time it was out of warrenty so I decided to tear into it. I found two out of six batteries(Panasonic CGR18650HM)dead. Since the two dead bateries were in parallel with two good batteries, I don't believe it is the charging board or anything to do with the computer. It appears to me to be defective batteries. Since these batteries seem to be failing in more than one type of computer I suspect that Panasonic made some promises that the CGR18650HM couldn't deliver. Kevin Penney's solution(10/22/02) seems to be the most reasonable. Good Luck

Havng a Gateway Solo 9300, I developed the same problem on the main 11.1V 6400mAh battery BUT NOT on the second 10.8V 2400mAh battery. So I conclude that the problem is with the battery rather than the notebook. The battery now shows a voltage of 0.53v, so I would like to test the internal cells. Does anyone know how to open CLEANLY the 11.1v 6400mAh battery? Many thanks. Eric

Second.Carefully with med. flat blade screw driver remove the top cover it is glued on working batteries in the middle on mine there is
a small electronic circuit in back plug be careful here. After time working with it you will get the top off. Good luck from there all my batteries charged held 11volts but laptop still does not see this something wrong with circuit charging solo 2150 here.I am just going to use the above external units to power mine above then you have full control of your laptop. Yes it is the motherboard but bios also controls the battery not having the laptop
seeing the battery unless it is at what ever
level it was set at. Controlled by user Eprom in some laptops but not 2150. I'm told by maybe a gateway shop. Charging circuit works but for what battery voltage & amps its looking for.

I have two GW 2150's. Have had 3 at one time. Only have 1 with a battery charger circuit that works. I bought the $99 bat from GW and it still doesn;t work on the GW's that don;t charge.

I'm going to send in my non-charging 2150 (it's still under warranty) and have them fix it or replace it.

I like GW, but it's frustrating to go through problems like this and have the Company tell you it's the batteries. It's definitely the charging circuit on the 2150's. Too many people with problems.

Good luck to others with the same problem.

Lithium Ion Research

01/13/03
Hi guys,

In researching Lithium Ion technology, it appears that it’s a combination of ignorance of the battery chemistry requirements and computer engineers that did a bit too much in firmware.

First, a little primer on Lithium Ion charging. The initial charging mode is constant current. The batteries would pull too much current if charged at a given voltage (they would appear nearly shorted and overheat). After a threshold is reached where the current is limited by the charging voltage, the next charging phase is at ~4.2V constant voltage, until the cells reach a charging current of typically less than 50mA per cell. At this point, charging cuts OFF, and does not float. A periodic "topping off" cycle keeps the battery at near max charge.

The minimum cell voltage from most spec sheets I've seen ranges from 2.5V to 2.6V. NOT 3.0V! An error level that would be too conservative could sideline battery packs that are just fine.

It seems Gateway design engineers outsmarted themselves making battery management occur in firmware, rather than in a robust stand-alone circuit that simply "talked" to the CPU. Plug the AC adapter in, and if the battery needs a "top off" it gets one. If not, it would be left alone. Lithium Ion batteries specifically do NOT suffer from memory problems. So perhaps with the goal of "fancy" battery management, they created a protocol that results in damaged batteries, circuitry, or both.

Interestingly, I read somewhere that laptop batteries have a one-time "suicide circuit". If any parameter such as overcharging/temp/undervoltage occurs JUST ONCE, the pack is rendered permanently inoperable by the internal circuitry. This could mean that once a charger inside a laptop goes bad, it will simply activate this kill switch in every battery plugged into it from then on...

For those of you with actual bad cells in your packs, it is possible that the charging circuit inside the laptop was damaged by thermal overload. Analog devices, Micrel, etc., charge management chips carry admonitions against exceeding thermal dissipation of their devices, especially those that use an external pass element with no thermal shutdown provisions. A shorted battery pack could damage this circuit, and then the circuit could kill new battery packs from then on.

I have not read ANYWHERE the reasons for the strict official limitations on distribution of Lithium Ion “bare cells” that do not include safety circuits. I am assuming that overcharging/overheating may result in toxic or explosive results. Imagine your laptop ON YOUR LAP going off like a grenade due to failed charging circuits! I suppose the other reason may be economic. Sanyo is currently suing another battery manufacturer over patent infringement. Limiting availability of bare cells may allow distributors to keep prices artificially high ($200-$300).

Just some musings from the Lithium Ion battery student…

Lithium Ion Research

Oh, just tripped over a site that states "When Li-on and other newer cicuits come to the end of either:
400 cycles Pre-determined manufacturers Date Stamp ,Prolonged Upper Operating temperature levels a pulse is sent to an EPROM on the charge circuit which burns it out and
permanently closes down the circuit. I know this as I have had several modern Smart circuits tested on a
circuit analyser. This of course is a sort of built-in obsolesence, but many manufacturers
will say to ensure safety... "

This was on another product, but may go further to explain battery pack problems. Perhaps diagnostic LEDs on the packs would be helpful!

I have a Gateway Solo 9300 bought back in 2000 that has been very reliable. I very seldom had to use the battery and most of the time just kept it plugged into AC. I noticed the other day that my charging light was on and checked the charge and it shows 1% remaining. I took the battery out and placed it back in and the charge went up to 18% and then dropped back to 1%. It says it is charging but never goes past 1%. Wow! Look what I started. And I thought I was the only one. Guess what?? I bought an ibook. I love it. Because it works.
I'm impressed at how many people had the same problem I did. I still have the Solo 2150 plugged in and sleeping because it runs two programs that can't be beat by anything on a mac. Expedia Street Maps and an obscure software that reads my cdrom repair manual for my old 67 Dodge Dart. So I have a $1200 atlas/repair book. And it also holds down little slips of paper quite well. Class Action? Doubtful because a warranty's a warranty after all. But I'm excited to try some of the fixes you folks have suggested. After all, there's nothing to loose. PS I'm pretty sure Gateway Person actually works there . . . He's the model for the cow print logo. But have you noticed they've kind of put him out to pasture? Good Posting Forum, got a lot of useful info and websites from it. I have a problem with a Pavilion HP laptop.

From what I've read I beleive that some of the cells inside the battery pack are dead hence why i get about 10 mins of battery. It uses six US18650GR. I will need to get a meter on each one to confirm. I am told that if the voltage drops below a certain level then the battery will never charge, with the battery pack.

It may be possible to correct the problem by applying a small charge to the battery pack via a 9volt transistor radio battery. a bit like jump starting a car. The problem is how do you identify the positive and minus terminals on the battery pack. You could use a christmas light bulb or a volt meter.

But what was more exciting was the 48hr deep freeze option.

This one I'm going to personally try.

Ist you completely discharge the batteries. In the config change your power options and disable battery monitoring and turning off hard drives so that the computer dies, with no power.

Remove your battery pack. Seal inside a bag to help prevent moisture. Then place it into the freezer for 48hours.

Remove the battery pack from the freezer and ensure it is dry. Allow it to reach room temperature should take between 1 -2 hours then plug into the laptop and power up on the mains.

The unit should now recharge again as normal.

I have a follow up to my post yesterday, I open one of my defunked batteries, discovering it has 6 panasonic cell inside. when I used a multimeter the cells test fine and accross the cells is 10.8V (which is the battery's rating). However accross the terminals of the battery there is only like 1V of power. Could my battery's circuit board be buggered? or it meant to be like that? anyway I'm gonna try the freezer trick as mentioned above.

I am from the netherlands. My battery of the solo 9300 went bad too. I tried to look for a new battery by gateway, but i can not order directly from then. I am now searching for an alternative battery from another manufacturer. Till now i found one but it cost double the price of gateway. Did someone already tried the freezing trick. By the way: my system won't start either without a battery in place. It might be possible if you know how to prepair the contacts together in the right way.

Everyone here is not alone - Dell batteries suffer all the same problems (last year there was a major recall owing to poor manufacture / circuit charge failure

The Dell battery packs have eight individual cells (normally Sony 18650 units) and these are wired up to the protection/ charge/ watchdog circuit in such a way that three voltages are available from the unit - using true ground and stepped ground connections. Two of the voltage ports are available at the main connector and so it seems feasible to restart any dead cells by careful (goggles and rubber gloves) use of a Li-ion voltage charger. The third set of cells however appear to have only internal connections and maybe the supply to the watchdog circuit in the battery.
If this set of cells drops beloe the nominal 3.6v through fault of the battery, or failure of the circuit govening their charge then the battery is rendered useless until its taken apart

I have not yet had a chance to check the rst of the circuit inside but can see a main fusebank IC of 5A rating providing through put from the outside world, as well as a Misubishi IC P/N M37515 which carrys out all the functions of the battery cycling and maintenance

Since voltages are apparent on all batteries that are within the dismantled pack that are more than the nominal 3.6V I assume the fault of this one lies with the circuit, however I would not believe its worth simply throwing it out until Ive had a chance to refresh the cells by other methods

Will let you know how I get on

I thought I would just pass this on to all of you with dead Solo 2150 batteries.

I have been trying to purchase a replacement battery from Gateway for $99.00 and run straight into a brick wall.

I placed and order with them on 1/28/03. I still have not received my batteries.

I have called them at least 6 times now, and every time I get the same response. The parts are on backorder and you should have them in 2 weeks.

Well after the 3rd time hearing this I got real frustrated and wanted a little more than just they are on backorder.

Then I was told that the order I placed had the wrong part number and it needed to be cancelled and re-placed.

Anyways I have now had my order cancelled twice because of order entry errors at Gateway, and am on my 3rd try.

I was also told by Gateway that I was free to cancel my order at anytime and purchase them from somewhere else.

Nice Customer Service.

Has anyone else had any luck purchasing a replacement from them?

I'd be real interested to know.

Because I am from the netherlands I can not directly order by gateway.
I have looked around by some battery-suppliers, but almost everywhere the batteries are out of stock. If in stock the prices are three times the price of gateway. From the gateway customer service for dutch people (I am from the netherlands) I have got a www-adress: www.capdat.com Here could I place a order for the battery or other gateway-parts.
You have to mail them for a price, you can't just place a order directly. I have send mail to them twice. I am still waiting for an answer..
I have found a firm on the internet who can "repair" original battery. the price is about 50% above a new one from gateway directly price.
The adress is : www.batterymaster.com

Other possible adresses are:

Hello,

I just received my new battery from Capital Data USA.

There is a paper with it that says you have to fully dis-charge and fulyy charge the battery several times to train the "smart" battery so it will give a good percent of battery charge.

I am training the battery by now.

Because i am not sitting by the laptop all day and night to follow these instructions it will take some time.

I let you now next week how it went.

Hello folks. I am so sorry to hear about all of your laptop/notebook battery problems. I am an electrical engineer and I stumbled across this page while hunting for a source of high capacity Li-ion cells in the 18650 sized cell. (18mm diameter x 65mm length) While not owning any of the models mentioned here and after reading all of the various accounts here, it sounds to me like most probable source of this particular Gateway problem is not the batteries, but rather the charging circuit in the battery or its counterpart in the machine and/or how they talk to one another.

Could someone please measure the voltage across the pins in the battery bay on the machine while it is being powered by its AC/mains power source?

The person who posted they measured the rated voltage across the cells but almost nothing across the battery pack terminals makes me think that it is a battery pack circuit problem.

You people have suffered enough, don't waste time and energy on the 'freezer trick'. I cannot imagine from a technical viewpoint how this could possibly help in any way.

Another point: Li-ion cells do not develop a 'memory'. They do not need to be 'cycled' or completely discharged before charging or 'trained'. They are the future and the only problem they exhibit is their current price tag, which will come down over time as the technology becomes ubiquitous.

'Memory' 'cycling' and 'training' cells are terms which originated with Ni-Cad (Nickel-Cadmium) battery chemistry and they exemplify one of the several grounds why Ni-Cad technology is currently being relegated to the dustbin of technology history.

If your company would send my company one of your 200 defective systems with a defective battery pack and, if possible, one of the working battery packs, I would be happy to take a look at the system and to try to determine the cause of this epidemic.

Daniel,

One more item: Do the battery packs that function properly, do so when placed in different machines?

If you haven't tried moving a 'good' battery pack from a 'good' machine to a 'bad' machine to see what happened, please do so and post your results here or email your results to me. This test would be helpful in the diagnosis of this problem.

Take care,

You know you folks have made me not feel so bad, one week ago my 2150 battery crapped out also and I was very cranky, although mine is 2 almost 3 years old, It sit on my dinning room table, I have only used it on battery power 2 times and last week I unpluged it to take it to the firehouse, turned it on and BOOM ran for 30 seconds and then the Battery charging monitor showed the battery X out.
What somebody should do is copy all these post and send it to Gateway and maybe they will get the hint

We have 6 2150's and not one battery that is still good. I have replaced batteries on 4 of these in the past 2 years at $200 a piece! After reading this board I feel I should retire these and by some Dell's. Oh yeah, we also have 5 Dell's that were purchased around the same time we purchased the Gateway's and ALL of their battery's STILL charge! Good luck everyone.
p.s. Over 50 call's and the return of 3 2150's to Gateway got me nowhere but frustrated!

Mike - that could be the problem with your battery. Unless your laptop has the LI-ON battery, it needs to charged and used until it depletes itself. It shouldn't be plugged in all of the time or else the battery will lose it's "memory"

That goes for all laptops without the LI-ON batteries, not sure what kind your laptop has, but if it's 3 years old, I doubt its li-on

I inherited a Solo 9300 from a company I used to work for. They only had a few and were having battery problems. Went to Toshiba and then Dell. I currently have the Solo 9300 and an Inspiron 8000. GATEWAY - Battery is now defunked. Was going to buy a new battery, however, recently started "Keyboard Error (0211)" at boot up and the caps lock, num lock and scroll lock are all lit 100% of the time. Also started having trouble with the DVD on a long program install. The keyboard thing really has me bugged. Just spent $100 on a keyboard replacement and it did not fix the problem. So I am not sure what to do except use the thing for a frisbee. Any suggestions?

I Just bought my Gateway Solo 2150 laptop, er (portable desktop??) through the local paper. I knew it needed a battery so I ordered one from Gateway. I found these postings, read them, then canceled my (“It’ll be there in a couple of days then when I ordered the battery it would be about 2 weeks”) battery from Gateway. I tried to order one Moby Power from its web site (www 1001batteries com); I got an error message so I called the company. Apparently my credit card company has some security measures in place to block international transactions (they are located in Canada but ship the batteries from Connecticut). I had to call my credit card company and tell them to process that order, no problem. The tech at Moby Power was very helpful he explained that you use the Gateway ac power adapter to charge their external battery. Oh yeah The Gateway technicians were helpful also.

...I thought I was wrong one time, but I made a mistake |-)...

Thanks to everyone who has posted; saved me quite a bit of money. Yesterday I bought a new HP notebook for $850, and it's faster, has more memory, and a CD-RW/DVD drive. My 2150 will now be learning fodder for my 2 year old...

I repair PC's and find this forum interesting since I was looking to rebuild a Compaq battery pack.

I just wanted to let you know why I won't buy a Gateway PC. I have two clients who own Gateway desktop PCs that are out of warranty. They both have bad motherboards but Gateway will not sell this part if it is out of warranty. They only will replace it if it is in waranty. Basically both of these people are screwed now since they have to dump the PC. They are buying Dells now!!

I found with my 2150 that was having the same problem, that if I set the power management to ignore the "dead" battery it would run for another hour at least. I may be an isolated incident, but this whole problem could be less Gateway's fault and more Microsoft's.

Has any anyone tried the Gateway "Battery Learning" download (7501801.exe) for Solo 2300 2500 9100?
File Description: Solo 2300, 2500, 9100 Battery Learning Utility
Version: 3.4
Operating System: NA
Part Number: 7501801
Date: 05/01/2002

You can get it from;

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/output.asp?ref=std&curPlatform=Notebook&curSystem=Solo%202300

It says it will do this;

1. First the program checks the battery's voltage and corrects this if necessary
(Never interupt this process - it may take about one minute).
2. Then the learning program charges main battery.
2. After the main battery is fully charged the program issues a command to discharge the main battery.
3. The main battery supplies power to system until it is fully discharged.
4. After 10 minutes, the program reads the full capacity to verify if the learning was successful.
5. The program displays a successful completion message after the battery has been charged to a certain level. It will then continue to fully charge the battery but the process can be stopped at this stage.

I read somwhere you need to take the batteries out of a gateway solo 2150 unless you are charging them.
however, this will only help you for your next one.

Hello,

It took quit a while but my new battery functions well..But all together the cost for this battery was high. almost $300,-.

But my laptop is usefull again.

Remark: Training a Li-ion battery isn't because of memory-effect, but to learn the computer to read the remain power of the battery.

regards,

I have had the same troubles with my 2150 as everyone else. I went through 3 batteries and barely used the laptop off main power. I am a technician, and after reading all of these posts I decided to check the individual cells in the batteries. It was quite interesting to find that there are 3 sets of 2, and in every battery pack the first set was FULLY charged, and the other 2 were completely drained. Obviously more than coincidence. Gateway also does not have or plan to ever have a sound driver for Windows XP. I am still paying for this computer with their financing! I hope this information spreads to the general public so that people will know how Gateway operates. Is there a class action suit? There definately needs to be one! I will be glad to assist in any way I can! By the way, I bought a new HP laptop from bestbuy the other day, it costs the same as the amount remaining that I still owe on the gateway laptop that I have been paying on the last 3 years! I bet they will be more willing to keep their reputation!

Anyone have the same experience with the SOLO 2500 battery? I just bought a used laptop and it only works with the AC adapter. If I put the battery in, it acts like it's charging it. It will be at 1% for a half-hour, then 2% for a half-hour, and then at some point quickly zoom up to 100% power. But if at that point, you unplug the AC adapter, it goes dead. I'm soo confused as to whether I should buy a new battery, or if it's some sort of "recalibration" problem.

I have tried my last attempt with Gateway to resolve this problem, I am attempting to organize a class action lawsuit against Gateway on this matter. If you are interested in participating in the early stages of this lawsuit, please email me at gatewaylawsuit@yahoo.com with your description of the problems you have experienced. Please include any contact information you are willing to provide. Please email only if you are serious about persuing this matter.

Hi Guys.. I have had the same problems with my 2150 laptop and last week I called Gateway and complained and told them about this sight and they sent me a box to return my laptop for repairs. I got the laptop back today and its working great. My warrenty was up over a year ago, but they fixed it at no cost, even gave me a new battery.. Maybe everyone should try contacting them again.. Hey all. I have a Solo 2150 and Three batteries that are not taking charge. I took one apart and replaced the cells, but not luck. Apperently, the controller board that monitors the battery charge and temperature needs a reset. However, there is no proper documentation or driver software to exercise this option. Has anyone able to send a SMBus command to a battery. The battery is mapped in the I/O address space and should be accessable. I yet have to figure out how.
Anyone, please post any information relating to this approach.

thinkpad600e and compaq armada 7730
I used to have a compaq armada 7730 laptop. I left it in my pickup overnight and it froze. Laptop still worked but it ruined the control board in the battery pack. So I purchased a new one.
After getting the new one installed and working, I tore apart the old one and found the cells to hold a very good charge. Just so happens, the cells are so similar to the cells in my thinkpad 600E, I got cells!! Will install soon and get it working.
Its amazing what saving parts will do for you!

Hmm Hello I have a IBM Thinkpad and found this site as i bought it second hand and as i expected i would need to upgrade and install bits and pieces. The Battery pack has those well known Lithium Ion CGR18650HM cells and i have spent a good 30mins scanning the notes above and notice no recent links to sources of these. The cost like the other manufacturers for new is quite expensive and as i am able to rework these pack (if only i could get the replacements, if anyone knows where i can obtain these please email me.
Thanks and good luck all.

I have the same problem with my Solo 2150CL 433MHZ. The Battery wont charge and I can only power it with AC. But if I disconnect the AC for some minutes and turn it on again the Date and Time goes back to 1998. What could be the problem? Is it the CMOS Battery? :-(
I bought the CMOS battery on ebay for usd$12 and I found also on ebay the battery for $80 pack specs are 10.8 volt, 3600mah.).

Does anyone knows hot to replace the CMOS battery? how do you open the case to see the motherboard? any links?

Thanks!

I worked for gateway in Austalia till they closed. It was a great company to work for and did make an effort to support customer. Any company they grows from 3 staff to 22,000 staff and a US$9 billion doller turnover in 15 years is sure to have some issue. (they are way down from these figures now) They did not have 50 years like IBM and HP to mature their business structure. Anyway Gateway does not really make laptops or computers. They just assemble or resell them. Must are made by companies like Samsung. Some models were even sold by others companies eg. The 3300, 3350 were also sold by Dell Badged as an LS. I have a 3300 and a 3350 which have had battery failure. I will be try some of the advice above. Thanks.

I guess I am to join, it seem, a large group of batteryless gateway 2150 laptop owners. I have had my laptop for a few years now and never used the battery didn't even put it in the laptop. Now I want to use it and thinking it should still be new I plugged it in. worked great for a week and all of a sudden it stopped charging at 74%. The windows power meter says it is charging but the battery is completely dead if I unplug I have not power. Any Ideas.

I just got a 2150 free because it will not power up with battery OR a/c cord. Anybody find a place where
they tell you how to open the case?
Ham

01/06/04
Opening the case
Mark To open the case:
1.) Remove the keyboard by prying it past the plastic tabs around edges, lift tabs on ribbon cable.
2.) Remove the battery and CD-Drive
3.) Remove hard-drive (right side, 1 screw on bottom, slides out
4.) Un-plug connector to LCD display
5.) Remove screws from case
6.) Open case
7.) Chech power switch

I too am a "last time" Gateway consumer. Solo 2150 w/battery woes, now will not start up. The power switch seems to work(the power lights go on/off) but the HD head seeks (clicking sounds)but does not spin up and the screen shows nothing. As if in hibernate mode. With or without the battery installed.I have opened the case but see no obvious damage. Please, is this bios, voltage problem or motherboard problem others have experienced? Thankyou.

EASY SOLUTION!

I've had the same problems you all have had with my 2150. Replaced batteries, out of warranty, not charging, etc.
I called gateway and told them about all of the posts online and mentioned the class action lawsuit, and within minutes they said they would fix it for free if I sent it in. Just had to pay for shipping. Within less than 10 minutes on the phone, my problems were solved. Just call them and tell them about the lawsuit. They will go out of their way to help!
Good Luck to all.

I also am having a battery issue. I did not use the laptop for about a week and went to turn it on and started to bootup and it then went dead. I ordered a battery from the gateway website and it took 2 weeks to arrive. I was very excited to receive it. I placed it in and still nothing happens. I cannot even boot with the AC adaptor. I have never had a problem with the computer until the battery drained. I have called gateway tech support 3 times to see if anything can be done. Out of warranty. Just to have them look at it is $299 according to badge #16447. And if I want to send my battery back in they want to charge me a 15% restocking fee. Has anyone found out how to fix the battery/AC adaptor problem? HELP

Ok so I have been having the same problems as anyone. My father recieved an email today from Palm about a lawsuit that is currently taking place. Apparently the motherboards experienced electrostatic discharge when the computers used hotsync with their palms. There are specific models of the palm and computers specified on this page www.pda-pc-esdsettlement.com . I hope this helps anyone here about the problem. I am not to familiar with what ESD means so if anyone wants to post something about it I would appreciate it.

I have a 2150 also. In the three years of warranty it was returned to base 5 times, has had 4 new chassis, 1 new screen, 2 new batteries and 1 new charger.
Why does the word lemon spring to mind?
Gateway please publish the schematic or tech details so we can at least fix these ourselves.

I'm having the same problem as everyone here and would like to ask a technical question (or maybe three related questions). There is a circuit board related to charging/overcharging in the battery, right? Is there charging circuitry in the AC adapter? How about in the laptop itself? Thanks in advance to anyone with the answers.
