While trying to figure out my KRNL386.EXE SOL general protection fault that screwed up my solitaire I decided to run a check for viruses. Oh goody! More surprises.
I get the message, "The file SP.DLL was destroyed by a TR/WinReg.StartPage virus." What does SP.DLL stand for, and what does it do? What is a TR/WinReg.StartPage virus? What have I lost by the SP.DLL being destroyed? What did it do? (may it rest in Peace somewhere?)
Jeez all I wanted to do was play a game of solitaire. Not sit here in solitude waiting for the next shoe to drop.

Hi
With due respect.
Why have you started a new thread with the very important clue to your original question.
I am sorry, the advice that I have given you in Krnl386.exe thread is useless because the clue is here.
Good luck

sp.dll is spyware:
goto Start>Run>
type MSCONFIG
go to the STARTUP tab, look for this line:
sps regedit c:\windows\sp.dll
Uncheck that box and see if that fixes your problem.

to "help": thank you for answering question, very informative, helpful and not at all condescending. to 'massoud': you're an --, go put your head in a microwave oven and set it for defrost, 15 minutes should be sufficient.

Here's a very helpful FREE spybot program. It will search and destroy spyware on your computer. I was amazed how many I had on my computer, and now it's running much more smoothly.

Its a form of a worm virus. It changes your IE to spyware. You have to uncheck it in the msconfig/startup menu. Then u have to delete it in the regedit (start-run-regedit). Then you have to do start-find-sp.dll, and delete it there.

You don't want this sp.dll file on your computer at all. You can either use the msconfig method mentioned above, or directly edit your registry. To edit the registry, do start>run type "regedit" and hit enter. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-->SOFTWARE-->Microsoft-->Windows-->CurrentVersion-->Run
You'll see all of the things that are starting up on boot (this is where msconfig gets its list btw). Then you can just delete the line that you don't want (in this case the line with sp.dll).

I found that Western Digital's Data Lifeguard causes this error, stop it running and Solitaire works without giving the error.

Was having probs starting Word so virus checked and found sp.dll. So deleted it and unchecked in Start-up and yes Word worked again. But not for long - it's playing up again. I ran Spybot S&D which found a lot of spyware and fixed it, but still cannot start Word. All this since installing broadband last week! Can anyone help?
