No hard drive?

Hey.

My brother has a huge problem with his computer and I've tried all I can think of. He said he'd just shut down his computer one night and the next time he turned it on, it was prompting for the start-up disk. Now, we tried the start-up disk (both CDROM and Floppy) and it says that his hard drive doesn't exist.

At first, I thought he probably had deleted it by mistake or something, but then my aunt's laptop won't turn on either. I haven't seen the message myself, but it apparently said something like 'WINNT/config/system' didn't exist. She has XP and my brother has 98. I thought it might be a virus, but my aunt says she hasn't ever gone online with her laptop. My uncle was the last one to use it, though. He installed a game, I believe.

Anyway, I don't know if these two incidents are related or coincidence. Do you guys know of any viruses that are deleting HDs?

Browser: IE
OS: Win98
