Arrrgh... I've been trying to re-create this, and I haven't found the right combo yet !!
If you can choose the colour, then simply choose "transparent" (or "clear", whatever...) and it may work..

Hey mike,
What you are describing is typical of XP desktop that has a wallpaper on it. XP's text and background colours by default are either dark or light, there is no inbetween when you add wallpapers like pictures etc. However there are freeware applications out there that have enhanced this basic setup. A good one is called 'Transparent Desktop' and you can get it from here..
http://home.flash.net/~qsystems/
there is a nice picture ont hat site that shows what it does. Have a look and see if that is what you are after..

* Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click Ok.

Looked into Mikey's app ; cool !! They do mention it is best to turn off "Active Desktop".. Does XP have Active Desktop ?
Either way, Mikey gets points and donuts.. and little brother gets a freebie : Ed's web page

Hey Mike. You can also look at where Ed pointed, and you'll probably see that the setting there was changed...

Hey Mike, thanks for clearing that up. Strange how this happened with a clean install though. AMD 64 huh... I wouldn't mind getting one of those myself !
