When I try to defragment it works until 1% and then returns to zero. Doing it from safemode works but I would like to be able to do it in regular mode and defragment with the task scheduler. What, if anything, can I do ?
Microsoft Windows 98
GenuineIntel Pentium(r) II Processor
96MB RAM
60% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (2185MB free)
Available space on drive C: 2185MB of 4117MB (FAT32)

Defrag cannot do its job if another programme keep writing to HDD.
Screensavers, monitoring programmes etc require frequent disk access.
60% resources is an indication for programmes are running in the background.
If your Defrag does not hang-up the machine or give you a termination notice,
I do not see any problem. Do not worry about the % it is just a simplified info.

I like to download music and burn Cds so I was told one should defragment regularly. This is why I thought it was important to be able to defragment. Is there a way to stop programmes writing to my HDD so I can defragment ?

Zapata, I answered your original question which was “I would like to be able to do it in regular mode and defragment with the task scheduler”. And I particularly concentrated on the “1% and then returns to zero”.
There are lots of factures involved in CD burning, but they are mainly for achieving the highest Burning, which one of them is fragmented HDD where the temp file for CD writing is kept. However if you are Burning on the Fly, then hard disk does not come into the equation at all.
To find out the best way to Burn CDs, then you must refer to the CD writer’s manual.
To stop programmes keep writing to disk in the background. Exit them or remove them from the Systemtray.

Zapata - go here and get Mikes cpl, then uncheck all the rubbish youve probably got running at startup, including realplayer and the likes. its a nifty tool and might help u shut down a program u dont know is running

I to have the same problem with the defrag going to 1% and returning to 0. I have turned off the screensaver, all power mangment, and Norton,I also go into "close program box" and end tasks to all programs except for systm tray and explorer.
So if you could help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

start>programs>accessories>systemtools>systeminformation>toolsmenu>systemconfigurationutility>startupTAB and then unclick all the stuff that you don't need auto starting. before defragging, i like to cleanup temporary files first sometimes using a program called windowwasher, then use alt-cntrl-del and endtask unessential programs. unplug my modem and shutoff zonealarm firewall (it seemed to be writing a lot...perhaps all of them portscanners.bleh!) then I start defrag and go to sleep. I've heard of defrag programs that were faster and better than the windows version...but I havent bothered yet. i'm actually here trying to solve another problem...good luck on the defrags.

DON'T use the start up tab to disable programs from loading. Most programs that load on start up can have their settings changed thru their interface under 'prefferences' or 'otions' Others just place shortcuts in startup folder under c/windows/start/startup. Unchecking thing in startup tab can lead to very weird problems, it's for temperary changes when troublshooting.
Doing defrag in safemode is a prefferable way to perform the job as if there are any programs running on your taskbar they will slow the process ,virus scanner for sure. If you want to defrag, scan disc in reg mode close all programs beside the clock.
