correct my problem with mmsystemdll
PCtech

07/14/03
Hey Bummer, your sound problem is probably because you need drivers=mmsystem.dll in the [Boot] section of your System.ini file.
Just click on Start/Run then type msconfig. Edit the Boot section of the System.ini file to add the line: drivers=mmsystem.dll then save, close, and reboot. That should get your sound working.
This didn't fix my problem with the Wowexec error however it is one of the suggestions in the Microsoft Knowledgebase. I think I'm going to try renaming the mmsystem.dll file then extracting a new copy next. I think that's what Joanna meant. If anyone has success, please post back on how you fixed it.

This worked. I replaced the mmsystem.dll file and the error stopped. In Win XP there are two copies of the file. One is in Windows\System and the other is in Windows\System32. They should both be 68KB. I renamed the original files to mmsystem.old then copied the file from another XP system. Reboot and it should work.

Sorry Tim, I know these weren't very good instructions. Bare with me if I point out stuff you already know.
The mmsystem.dll file controls the XP subsystem that lets you read old 16Bit DOS programs. This error is caused by trying to install or run an old program that overwrites one or both copies of this file.
Usually, one copy is still intact (68kb) and the other one is larger. You can use the correct copy to replace the bad one. (This will save having to find another XP system.) Just follow the instructions below.
Click on Start and choose Run. Type explorer and click OK. This opens Windows Explorer which basically shows a map of your drive. In the left window are the folders and the right window are your files.
Go down the left side and click on the arrow by the Windows folder. (This will expand it to show the subfolders under it.)
Find and Click on the 'System' folder then in the right window locate the 'mmsystem.dll' file. If it's the right size (68kb), right-click on it and choose copy. If not, right-click and choose delete.
Go back to the left side and click on the 'system32' folder. On the right side again find the mmsystem.dll file. If this is the larger one, right-click and delete if not, right-click and copy.
Now go back to the left window to whichever folder you deleted the file from (system or system32), right-click and choose paste.
If you find that both copies are the wrong size, you can follow the procedures above to open Windows explorer on another XP machine and copy the file to disk.
You can also extract the correct file from your XP CD if needed. You can find instructions on extracting files in Windows Help.
Sorry this is so drawn out. Post back to let me know if you get it. Good luck.

I just don't stop do I...
I wanted to mention, if you have to make a copy on disk, right-click on the file, go to SendTo, then choose '3 1/2 floppy (A)'.
Also, I realize I mentioned renaming in the beginning then changed to deleting. It's just a little cleaner this way.
OK, I'm done.

No Sound on XP
The sound on my laptop suddenly stopped working? Im running XP and one day it was working, the next it isnt. I thought it may be the sound card as i have run the std diagnostics but since i installed XP to my desktop, my external speakers dont work? Ive tried them on my laptop and desktop pc and they used to work on both?

Is this an XP fault? Do i need some sort of extra drivers? HELP!!

Getting windows general protection fault after loading symantec antivirus software (to run live) on my computer. In stepping through commands to achieve startup, I skipped loading the symevnt.386 driver and was able to launch windows. I want to have live antivirus protection, but cannot until I solve this problem. Any hints out there? Thanks Brian.
