in general ptsnoop is a Backdoor trojan... it tries to connect to certain sites and enables a user to control mousemovements and so on...
I don't think its the most probably case htat your husband isntalled it to spy on you but that could certainly be true, too.. i don't know your husband and if he is theman to spy his wife beause of jealousy or something...

In any case ptsnoopn could also be another thing... an executable belonging to your modems driver.

I'd say most probably a trojan you got by case, so don't worry, run Norton Antivirus or F-secure or another virusscan..

PS: if you really think your hjusband would spy on you at your pc... to my mind you have a problem or are a little bit paranoid.. (without wanting to be personal but..)

I find PTsnoop running when I try to close down my aol at the end of a session. It is one of the files that keeps running when I say to end task so I can close it just stays there and I have to shut the computer down to get rid of it and aol...I do have McAfee as my virus protection. I have read that this program may be necessary to run my moden? I just replaced my moden as it quick working after I saw this program on the aol close fly message. I am using windows 95

What do you think it is?

ptsnoop is not a virus or worm, but an Anti virus program will probably treat it as one. ptsnoop is a small .exe program that is used by HSP-style "software" modems (Host Signal Processor) to locate com port & make sure all related drivers are loaded. If you can get online with your modem and everything is working, ptsnoop is really not needed
Your win.ini file lists it as:

load=ptsnoop.exe
run=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cmmpu.exe.

If you just gotta get rid of it, edit it to read:

load=
run=
NullPort=None

heres some mor help:
Ptsnoop.exe is a program installed with some modems that monitors the COM ports for
the modem driver. It's not actually necessary for using your modem.

To stop the error message, you can open C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI with a text editor such
as Notepad or Word Pad. Locate and delete the reference to Ptsnoop in either the
LOAD= or RUN= lines at the top of the file, and save the file. (Leave the LOAD= and
RUN= references.)

Check the Windows Registry by selecting Start*Run, typing RegEdit, and pressing Enter.
Navigate to HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
If you see a reference to Ptsnoop in the right window, simply highlight that reference
and press Del, then close the Registry. Restart Windows and you're done.

Bottom line is it's not neccessary to run at startup.

My computer was a Compaq 5070 running Win98. It has an HSP 56 Micromodem. Recently upgraded to Win2k and updated the drivers for the modem. Now every time it boots in Windows I get two error messages:

Can not find the file 'Load =' [or one of its components] make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

I hit OK and then I get:

Can not find the file 'PTSNOOP.exe' [or one of its components]. Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

The modem works fine but something in the start menu seems to be looking for these files. Does anyone have ideas on how to eliminate the error messages?

If you have a modem, this maybe a file your modem requires. There is a virus out there that runs as PTSNOOP but there is also a particular type of Modem that also uses the same name for it's execution. Hope this helps.
