When I use my computer, it restarts by itself suddenly after about a half hour of using it. What should I do to fix it?

This does not sound good. First thing that comes to mind is maybe (just maybe) your cpu fan is toasted.
When the CPU overheats it could be causing the reboot.
To check whether or not your cpu fan is running you could remove the side panels (or full panel depending on box design) so you can peek into your computer while it is running.
Turn your computer on with the sides off.
If you don't see the fan on your CPU running then you need a new one.
If you are a total newbie the above may be scary.
If so get a friend or local tech to help.
If the fan is not running you can either buy one and install yourself, or take it to a repair shop for a new one.
Not all fans are the same. So make sure you get the right type for your cpu.
Sorry but the world of computer innards were not designed to be simple for us normal folks.

If the cpu fan is running then the reboot is not caused by overheating.
But let's check the fan first.

I have the same problem with a system i just built only mine will run fine under normal operation when i put a load on it like running 3D Games (AVP2 Quake3 and Deadly Dozen) it seems to freeze up for a sec then restarts its self... I have built about 80+ comps and never had this problem before.

System Specs

Amd Athalon TB 1.0ghz
256mb Crucial DDR PC2100 ram
Geforce 2 MX 64mb
Win 98SE
MoBo ECS M810lmr DDR Board.

the CPU Fan is a Globalwin and have 1 extra Intake Fan
System Temp is 29degrees C
cpu temp is 38degrees C
thats the temps after it restarts itself.

that is pretty damn good for heat on that cpu since the normal heat range is around 50-52 C

Used Artic Silver Heat Grease

I have been trying to figurer this out but nothing i do seems to make any diff i have al the updated drivers for the Chipset and Vid and Sound.

Its runs smooth as hell for about 10 to 30 mins into the games then it restarts itself.

Any help would be nice

Thanks

Josh

My friends computer restarts by itself after a while.
I did check the cpu fan and it was running.
earlier the powersupply fan was malfunctioning, and running slow and making noise.
I bought a new atx case, and swapped the guts into it. Everything seemed to be ok, till it just restarted by itself.
My friend said it was not restarting by itself before we swapped the guts into the new case.
the only other odd thing I noticed was there were hardly anything in the start, programs, accessories folder. None of the usual things are there, no scandisk, defrag, etc. Only four items pertaining to communications are there.
I can go to start, find, and type in Scandisk, or defrag, and windows finds them and I can run them from there. any ideas on these two probems? thanks, Joe

Power supplies can also cause this. The newer system boards "self monitor" the voltage getting fed to them and may reboot if there is a voltage drop. 300 Watt power supplies are highly recommended for the newer P-4 and Athlon systems. Outside power can also contribute to this (power from the wall). You might invest in an UPS (Uninterupted Power Supply w/ battery back up) to plug your computer into.

I had this problem as well. turned out to be bad memory. My computer would work fine under normal operation. But when I would play Red Alert II, every time I would start to win the computer would freeze or reboot. I was getting quite frustrated. I reloaded windows 98, upgraded to ME, reformated the hard drive and switched to XP. What finally solved my problem was taking out the 256mb pc 133 dimm I installed two months earler.

I had problems before I installed the 256mb pc 133 dimm, but that was related to a motherboard/processer upgrade. Seems that an AMD K7 requires at least a 300 watt power supply (found out after my third case/power supply).

I have another computer that reboots all by itself whenever the keyboard drawer is pulled out too hard or if the desk gets a slight kick, but I have traced that to a crack on the motherboard (still useable as long as I am careful).

My computer also reboots after being on after a few minutes, sometimes it stays on for a couple of hours(random)but just ultimately ends up rebooting. I reformated the hard drive and re-installed Win 98 (also tried running Win 2000 Pro for a while but it had the same problem, it just re-booted itself also. I have replaced the video card fan, replaced the hard drive checked all the cables, disabled the CPU warning temperature in BIOS and after all that it still restarts itself whenever it wants. All the fans (CPU,video, power) seem to be working fine. What can I do to fix this problem?

Yeah, I've been havin' the same problem, When ever I put a load on, like playing a game like GTA3 or Watching a DVD or even Making a flash Movie. It Would freeze for about 2 Seconds, and the the computer would restart. I recently about 2 weeks ago upgraded it from a Celeron 633 to a P3 800, Windows 98 SE to Windows 2000 Pro, and upgraded my BIOS. I have 320MB of Ram and that was upgraded about 5 months ago from 64 to 320, and I never had any problems until now. My CPU Fan is Fine, it's also brand new and keeps my CPU Temp at 47-50 C. I also have a Case Fan which keeps everything else cool. my Power supply is only about 5 Months old and is a 300 Watt. I am on a UPS (APC 350) and so and This problem is really annoying me if anyone can help it would be great.

Yes, I did have the same problem. I play Multi-Player games over the internet, specifically Commanche 4, but i was able to solve the problem by replacing the 256MB DDR RAM that came with my system. Apparently, it went bad on me after a month or so. This was after I did an extensive process of probable problem elimination that started with the operating system itself, the fan, the graphics card, CD ROM, motherboard, etc. and finally the RAM itself. My game would freeze intermittently and i could not even restart it using the control-alt-delete keyboard combination to reboot the system. Yes folks, the RAM can and will sometimes go south on you.

Hi GoPal
As you have recently upgraded some of your components, then the problem might be with a bad upgrade.
I am not clear reading your post, at what stage of upgrade your problem started or even if you had your problem before. So please re-post with some specific details.

In general, when a pc freezes, (apart from software hang-ups) it normally can be pointed towards CPU or RAM problems.

However when the pc restarts by itself (W2k OS will create a log and reboot after encountering a software fault, this is its default setting), it is normally, either a faulty PSU, mobo or a faulty power cable and in your case even a faulty UPS.

It is fair to say that hardware components go faulty or even give up ghost (die) at the beginning of their life cycle.

Good luck

Massoud

07/05/02
Hi again GoPal

I forgot to add. W2k has a very extensive hardware and software error logs. Those might give you a clue as well (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer)

Good luck

Not sure if this will help but, I had a simillar problem and found that the NIC was causing the rebooting. I fixed it by disconnecting the WOL (Wake On LAN) wire and that seamed to take care of it. Just one more possibilities if the other suggestions here do not work.

In this competitive world the quality of products has gone down. You may consider the man that went to the store and purchased a NEW pack of light bulbs, went home and replaced his light bulb with a new to find out his light still did not work.. of course he calls a repairman to come fix the light. The repairman flips the light switch and nothing happens, he then walks over to a lamp that has a bulb in it that he knows is a good working bulb, he removes the bulb and screws it into the light socket that he was called to repair, flips the switch and the light comes on .. The repairman collects his service fee and leaves..The point to this is : JUST BECAUSE IT IS NEW, DOES NOT MEAN IT IS IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION...Your parts may be 1 month old or 1 year old, or even new, but if the parts are not working correctly-- you get the picture !!

Purchase a good name brand power supply- the ones that come with most atx cases are not considered GOOD QUALITY... If your computer restarts itself it is most likely the power supply went dead { or overloaded } for a second to cause this malfunction, first make damned sure your connections are tight and you have a good ground.. A good quality power supply will cost near $100 by the time u have it shipped to your dwelling.. If $100 is a lot of money to you as it is to me, it is possible to hook up a tester to the power supply to monitor its output during use before purchasing a new one.
I have owned amd systems for 11 months and i have had to replace 2 of those generic 400 watt power supplies. The new power supply stopped my auto restarting on my shuttle board. The other power supply was hooked up to a chaintech motherboard, it just quit and had to be replaced. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Re: My computer is rebooting itself!!
I think my problem is that I am using a compaq presario 5240. At first, my computer would reboot itself for no reason at all. So I checked the fan only to find that its power supply came unplugged. After I plugged the fan back into the mother board, my comp worked just fine for about 3 months. Now all of the sudden it is rebooting itself again. I checked the fan and it is working perfectly. I think it may have something to do with the BIOS. I don't know how to access the BIOS on this stupid compaq.

I recently replaced my factory Cd-ROM with a cd writer. I also upgraded my soundcard to a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum card. I read something about compaqs are really not upgradeable BECAUSE of the BIOS. If anyone can possible identify my problem or can tell me how I can updgrade my BIOS (if that is my problem) then I would appreciate it. Thanks

Reboots can be caused by the following:

Bad Power Supply
Memory
Faulty Surge
Faulty UPS
Software faults/conflicts
CPU Fan
Overheating

I would say most issues are either a bad power supply or a bad memory stick. Since most people don't readily have access to extra parts its hard to test.

If it happens constantly in a specific program, check the software makers knowledge base for conflicts. If nothing it may still be memory.

If you computer boots sometimes, restarts, then sometimes doesnt boot but the lights are on, it is most likely your power supply.

If your computer keeps rebooting after about the same amount of time, it is most likely overheating and you will need to replace the cpu fan.

A memory failure is like a software problem, it can happen basically anytime, and sometimes happens in certain programs constantly.

well anyways thats a real basic rundown, and there are more technicalities but my time is short.

check your fans. check your processor too, mine had a tiny crack on it on the back. your problem sounds like heat tho. goto start, then run and type "msconfig" goto the last tab at the end which says startup and untick any unnecessary programs. the things that should be ticked are: scanregistry, task monitor, system tray, loadqm, configuration loader, load power profile, scheduling agent and anything else that you need like mouse, sound of video card software. try it, worth a shot

I've just had the same problem with my XP1600 and KG7RAID. It had been working fine for ages then suddenly started blue screening or rebooting. Luckily I have a triple boot machine and found that Window2000 and Window98 were fine. Only XP was experiencing the problems. After lots of trial and error I found it to be the drivers of my SoundBlaster Audigy. I removed the XP drivers and installed the 2000 drivers and everything works 100%. As Travesty wrote earlier, the problems can come from anywhere. Just a matter of finding mates with spare hardware to test your assumptions otherwise it gets expensive :)

I just got a Compaq Presario 1700T and am having the same type of problems. My computer just decides that it doesn't want to run anymore and shuts down. HELP!!
System specs:
Intel P4 1.6 Ghz
654 Mb Ram
Chaintech Motherboard
Gforce2 Titanium 64Mb (before today Nvidia 128 32Mb)

My system seems to crash when opening a 3d animation program. It has been running for the last 2 hours but the moment I try to animate its shuts down. I have to admit I set my CPU clock speed from 100 to a higher level in the bios and first it wouldn't start up. I removed the battery and restarted my pc. After six times of resetting it started up again. I changed the settings to fail safe default settings (an option in my bios). I even bought a new videoadapter (Gforce2 titanium) but this doesn't solve the problem. I can access all other programs even monitor the CPU usage and all...and my fan is working (there is a big dust cloud on that iron part below the fan) and in the pc health section I get normal stats... but in windows my system randomly reboots when accessing this program. Also when using Pshp 6 or Premiere 6.1. Anybody have an idea?

3D animation programs and others such as Photoshop and Premier are all big fat memory-eating programs. They require lots of it to run, although it sounds like you've got quite a lot of it already. My computer has rebooted itself when I play a particular game that gobbles up memory the more I load and and save games. You've got 654MB of RAM, but make sure that's not being hogged by your program(s). You can view this in Task Manager. Perhaps there is a memory leak in the program? My game had one (Freedom Force) and I had to reboot after I was finished playing so my computer was useable again.

But it seems that there is an error that occurs in my dhcp or something...how do I fix that...This is always the last log file when going into a spontanious reboot. Zoe Blessing you were also right about the memory stress that occurs opening photoshop and premiere. But what strikes me is that both these programs dont have any connection with DHCP...

Any ways...help is appreciated!

I hope this helps some of you. I just recently upgraded to a GeForce 4 TI4200. I started having intermitent lock ups usually after half an hour or so. For me the fix was a larger power supply. Apparently Via chipsets, the kt266a imparticular have some power handling issues and can't evenly divy up power appropriately so your only choice is to over power your system so no divying has to take place to begin with. It's an unfortunate thing but it solved my problem. I noticed a few posts mentioning they are running Via chipsets so I hope this helps some of you.

Unless you are part of a LAN that uses a DHCP server, you don't need to have that enabled. It's possible that it could be causing problems by looking for a DHCP server when there is none. Right click on My Computer, select Manage, then Services and Applications and finally Services. Scroll down in the right window until you see DHCP Client and double click on it. Press the STOP button and then change Startup Type to Disabled., then OK. That turns off the DHCP client service so hopefully you won't encounter those messages again.

Ahhh! I have had my PC since August and 2 weeks ago it started this restarting madness. Only it doesn't just restart all the time, it shuts it self down for hours. Seriously, it won't come back on. All the leds stay lit, and the power supply runs, but nothing else. It also can restart, but 5 min later it will do the above.

The RAM is the problem, I have a single stick of pc2100 DDR, 128mb. I had problems with it before, it would free up then go under a load again. I took it out threw in about 32mb of pc100, couldn't stand it and put the ddr in. No problem, until now...

Spontanous rebooting is caused by many things.
Dirty Power is a big one. It is possible your voltages are off either from the line, surge supress or the Power supply itself. If you have a meter check your voltages. If you have a spare Power supply try it and see if the problem goes away. My next thing would be to test the Memory chips. Remove additional chips -discharge static electricity first by touching your grounded power supply for 4 sec or so. Then remove the chips and try each of them in different slots. If the chips seem to check out then try reseating the video card. Check to see if it is seating properly in the AGP slot. I have come across AGP slots that are slightly looser then they should be and this can cause problems.
Try another Power Cord. If after determining that the PS is ok, The Memory is ok, The AGP slot is ok try removing all other cards but the video and all other devices but the Hard Drive and see if the problem goes away. If so reattach and reinsert your cards and devices like cdroms 1 at a time booting each time untill the offending device/card is discovered. If you are still having a problem there are only a few things left. The BIOS settings. Try Optimal default or safe load or whatever your board specifies. If the problem goes away you know its a setting in the Bios. The next thing to do is run diagnostic tests. If you have something like Norton Utilities run NDIAG or a similar software. Tuff Test pro is excellent- Windsor Software makes it and you might be able to use their demo. If at this point the Computer is still rebooting then you have narrowed it down to the Hard Drive, A Virus, Corruption of the Software, or a bad Motherboard. For the Hard Drive run the Diag from the company support site.
Check for a virus, then I would consider reformating the drive. Windows XP is set to automatically reboot istead of giving you a blue screen. Microsoft was just a bit sneaky in not making this clear. In other words instead of crashing XP will reboot the machine if it finds a problem running itself such as conflicting drivers. The last thing to check now is the Motherboard. Motherboards go bad. Sometimes they are bad right out of the box. I had an ECS Board that caused spontanous rebooting exactly as you are describing it but it is still better to folow the troubleshooting elimination process. If you try everything I have outlined here and it still reboots after a clean install of XP replace the Motherboard. The only other thing is that the Motherboard itself is shorting out on the case but that is not as prevelant as it used to be but check it anyway.

I have had this HP computer for one week. The second day it restarted for no apparent reason. I have called HP numerous times. Each time the tech gave me different things to do, and thought it was something different. I have had this message come up: "Problem casued by ltmdmnt.sys" I have a lucent modem. I connect to the internet thru this modem, (dial-up) I have updated my modem's drivers, not online, because I can't seem to find it online.) But thru Control Panel, Modems, Properties, etc...
I would really appreciate any help with this error message. I don't believe I am a complete idiot, but I don't thing I needed to reformat my hard drive, and all the other things that HP had me do.
PLEASE HELP my email is pipburrous@hotmail.com

Here is the deal guys, All of your Geforce cards are extremely unstable with the m810lm series bios on your motherboard. (Yes, the ones with SIS technology, at least all the ones i know are.)
I personally am using a GEFORCE4 card 420mx designed by chaintech with the m810lr-h SIS 730 chipset XP 2100. At first I tried a power supply from 300 watts (factory) to 400.. THIS DOES NOT HELP. I tried POWERSTRIP..Helped alot in the beginning. Evidently when I tuned the AGP from 2x to 1x I could get about an hour of gaming before it would crash again.
I upgraded my XP 2100 from 512 ram to a gig and it has rarely crashed on me. (running 24/7 it crashes every 3 days) which is acceptable at this point.
I have heard that nvidia's detonator drivers with the geforce card will improve stability. Relax tho, This freezing and unstable stuff isnt because of 1 faulty motherboard.. Everyone with the m810lm series is having it.
I also suggest looking in to a bios update. Some cards dont work at all until you flash your bios (PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS PROCEDURE AS YOU MAY HAVE TO GET ANOTHER BIOS CHIP IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING)

If you need any more help just send me mail

Hi Chris
Your problem could either be hardware or software.
If hardware is at fault then it would normally be a bad RAM or PSU(Power Supply Unit).
For software: Corrupted or incompatible drivers would cause it to fail.
If you need any more help then please answer the following.

What OS?
Was this OS an upgrade or was it shipped with the pc?
Have you added or removed any hardware?
What is the PC’s specification?
When did it start giving you the fault?
Do you use any Anti Virus programme?
Do you use any Firewall?
What test have you done to determine the fault?
When you reloaded the OS, did you test the system without any other programmes being loaded?
Do you have the latest hardware drivers for your system?
Does the system reboot when in Diagnostic mode?
Does it restart when in safe mode?
This all that I could think of, any more clues would help to pinpoint the problem.

Do the following and test before reposting:
Use a deferent wall socket and power lead/cord for your power.
Use a deferent PSU and test.

Massoud

Two years ago i bought a Gateway 1.2Ghz Athlon, about 1 month after haveing the computer it started to reset on its own, when playing 3D games. I think the CPU is overheating, im not 100% sure of this, could be something else overheating but when I take the side of the case off and place a househould fan in the side of the computer the reseting stops. I sent the computer back to Gateway and they told me nothing is wrong with the computer. (As long as you do not try to run any heavy CPU apps, the computer will run all day.) So they did not help me. (heh bought a computer called the gamers dream and i canot play games on it.)

If your computer shuts off by itself, like someone turned off the switch, replace your RAM. Yes it does go bad. I had the same problem and someone told me to re-seat my ram. Well that did'nt work. I had 2 128meg chips and removed the oldest one and now it doesn't shut off anymore. I put the ram back in and it shuts off. Oh well you get the point. Good luck

Are any of you running Kazaa on your system???
Kazaa has some major issues such as spyware and gator. If your computer is shutting down and you are running kazaa or kazaa lite uninstall it and remove these evil programs.
You may also have a virus!! Run virus scans regularly. Oh and John, If your system resets only when playing games, chances are theres a problem with your video card or drivers. Try to find the most current drivers for your video card. If your using a Gforce 2,3,or 4ti,
Then run them in 32 bit color, Never 16 bit. For some odd reason the Gforce cards don't run stable in 16 bit color. Also check your power-supply. A bad power supply can overheat and cause a restart. Also make sure your power-supply is big enough to handle your system. Avoid using your power-supply to run neon lights, strobes, or any other add-ons. A separate 12 volt 500MA plug in power-supply
will run alot of light effects without drawing power from your power-supply. And if your using a hacked copy of XP, then your probably screwed.

Hey,
My compaq labtop freezes whilst i'm watching dvd movies to be specific, not when i'm playing games or playing an audio cd, just dvd movies. And much unlike the rest of those mentioned,it doesn't have a certain time frame for running and it does not reboot itself. The picture just freezes so does the mouse and nothing works not even the old faithful ctrl+alt+del. Hence the problem leaves me with only one way of shutting it down and it ain't a nice way that's for sure. I did appreciate it if someone could give me a tip here on what the problem is and how to resolve it. Thanks

Hi. I've been building computers for years and I've never had this problem. My PC either freezes or shuts down (never reboots) after a random amount of time (though it happens faster if I play a game or put some load on the system).

I've tried everything. At first I suspected the PSU to be the problem, so I plugged out ALL my cards except for the screencard as well as my CD rom drives to give the system extra power. It still did it.

I changed hard disks, tried a different screencard, put an extra fan on the system and finally rebuilt the whole thing on the table outside of the box to check for HDD malfunction, faulty screencard, overheating and earth leakage problems respectively to no avail.

All I can think is that it must either be the memory (PC800 RIMMS), the CPU (P4 1.6ghz) or the MB (Intel MD850). It even happens in old games that shouldn't put any strain on the system at all.

I'm totally baffled. I've read all the posts above but couldn't really find anything helpful. I'm am defeated, any help would be kindly accepted.

Damn Windows XP it's bugged..
I have been using computers from the x386 days, I never had any problems of random resets until I moved to Windows XP. Don't get me wrong I have had crashes before but nothing like this, its completey random, and yes I have replaced every single component to check. It's not to do with overheating either, because sometimes it reboots when it is just switched on after being off for weeks. Temperture are very low. I have used many computers with Windows XP installed and most of them have random reboots.

CONCLUSTION IT'S WINDOWS XP, IT'S THE WORSE OPERATING SYSTEM EVER..

hi. my computer can run smooth for 20 hours (and probably more, but i've never tried). but everytime I turn it on (that is every morning), this happens: system crashes during starting of windows. i have to reset it. after two or three minutes, it reboot itself. and again and again. after 6 or 7 minutes, it starts to run smoothly, and everything is ok, until i turn it off a then on again.
Now, every time I turn on my computer, I go to bios. I wait for about 7 minutes, reboot computer and wait for system to boot. And everything is fine. But I can't work with it immidiately. I've already tried to change my RAM memory a graphic card, but problem remained. Any ideas?

Yeah, my computer froze on high 3d graphics too. So I took the side off and put a big fan on it after I noticed it would do it faster when It got hotter (not the cpu temp), then I can play the games just fine, only when the room gets really hot does it freeze up. Try it it worked for me and was cheap!

My computer also resets itself after about 20-30 minutes but I find if I reset it myself 3 times as soon as I turn it on it will run for hours.
I have tried it with different PSU, ram, CD drive, hard drive, all cards, operating system everything except a new motherboard and CPU.
According to bios and motherboard monitor the CPU tempreture doesnt go above 40.
I cant think what else I can do and am contemplating buying a new motherboard but this would feel like giving up and if the problem still continued I would be less than happy!!

Re: My computer crashes without warning
Help!! I just built my first pc over 3 months ago. It locks up continuously. I once clocked it locking up 20 times in two hours. And it is not a simple control+alt+delete fix. When it locks up then the only way to restart it is to press the reset button or press in the power button for 10 seconds. I've tried everything..diagnostic tests, taking out hardware to eliminate the problem, and reconfiguring my BIOS, but nothing seems to work.

Here are the specs of my computer:
P4 1.5 GHZ Motherboard
Geforce 4 graphics card
Floppy Disk Drive
CD-RW Drive
CD-ROM Drive
ATX 350 watt power supply
160 mb. memory
17 in. monitor
P4 processor
mouse
keyboard
56k modem
2 case cooling fans
1 processor cooling fan

I also checked the heat on the processor and found it often at 118 degrees. I checked all of my fans and they were all working so I am not sure if this is the problem or not.

Please respond as soon as possible. I would very much appreciate to have this thing fixed, so that I can enjoy it during the summer holidays.

I would be suspusious of the 160 mg ram.
That means you are probably using a 128meg stick along with a 32 meg stick.

The common superstition is when using more than one stick of ram to use the same size. Like two 128, etc. Mixing ram sizes can be a problem.

Is that THE problem? Don't know. But I would dump the 32 meg stick of ram and see if that helps.

Re: Re: My computer crashes without warning
Stephen,

If it doesn't turn out to be your memory, which it could. I would suspect that it is an overheating problem. 118 is 47C and that is about 10C too hot.

Are you overclocking? If so, go back to standard speed and see if that resolves your problem. May be time for some new fans.

My computer won't boot up any more!
I've just got a new desktop, with:

2600 AMD processor
Biostar M7VIP 333 Motherboard (the troublemaker!)
128mb Geforce FX 5200 3D Card
2X 512mb DDR RAM
etc...

The problem is probably entirely my own fault: having booted up the computer for the first time, I decided to go into BIOS setup to check that all the settings were to my liking. I decided that it would be best to leave everything on default, so I hit the "Restore Optimized Defaults" key and then "Save and Exit".

Despite the settings now being on default, the computer won't boot (the drives and fans start to whirr, but the hard drive doesn't seem to kick in and nothing at all comes up on the monitor or speakers). What have I done, and how can I fix it? Someone please help!

PS Would a manual BIOS reset work; if so, how do I do it?

Computer randomly restarts
The prob is not with any of my PCI cards (or graphics card). I know its either 1) My PSU 2) My RAM, or 3) My CPU Fan. I've had my PSU for 1.5 years, and I got it from a PC Case. I'm guessing it has packed in/become too dusty. If it is not this, then it is probably my RAM, I don't know why but I just suspect it. If not that, it is definately my CPU fan, even though my CPU is not overheating. But I'd say that there is a 70% chance that it's a PSU prob. I will buy a new one tomorrow and let you know how it goes...

Also i recomend downloading 3dmark 2001. Its the best thing to test your graphics, memory and processor stability. Leave it running for a while, then you can find out if it is game related or hardware related..

Hello all. I read through the forum and have had a similar problem with my system crashing. I bought a new Abit at7 max2 with a Amd 2500 Barton with 1 GB of 333 ddr. My new system ran like a champ but now it is crashing and I mean hard. No system event(Win 2k platform)no warning, nothing just BLAM its down. The auto reboot checkbox has been cleared. It started when I was using Office 2003 beta and I thought I had been bit by the beta bug so I uninstalled it. Crashed during uninstall. I pulled out one of the pieces of memory and did the uninstall. So far so good. Im hoping that maybe the memory is bad and I can get on with running this thing. This product, 3dmark 2001 will help diagnose this? Im going to try it and hopefully help me diagnose it. Anyone with ideas is free to email or post here to the board for it would be much appreciated!

A freind of mine had the same problems with pc crashing when playing games. The rest of the time PC was fine, the problem was cured when I put the specific drivers in for his motherboard from his motherboard disc.
The reason he hadn't done this was that he had recently installed windows xp & it had put its own drivers in to suit the motherboard.

I have built 3 PC's so far and never had a problem until P4, I have built my son a PC using P3 CPU and Motherboard with same XP operating system and his PC is ok, so I am putting the fault down to P4 cpu and motherboard, any input into this matter would be appreciated, Iam running a Gigabyte P4 titan series 8SQ800 Ultra motherboard with a Pentium celeron 1.8GHZ cpu with a 3d hercules prophet 7000 64mb agp graphics board = 120GB HD my psu is 450 watt and memory of 512 DDR

My computer shuts down fine. But after a few hours or so of being off, It will turn back on? Occasionally it will stay off, but majority of the time I will have to unplug it to avoid it turining on in the middle of the night. Any suggestions of a fix? 2yr old AMD, WIN ME OS

CHECK THE VOLTAGE both i/o voltage and vid voltage had a similar problem that anytime I would load or play a game and the computer would freeze or turn off. Spent days and days this is the only thing that made it work so the people who computers work with a fan pointed on it your voltage is to high and would overheat you sound and video cards causing it to freeze or turn off. This will fix it permanently if not your components are corrupted.

Hey ppl. Was wondering if someone might be able to help me with a problem i am having. Recently upgraded pc which all works fine, but i decided to set up old processor/motherboard just to have a spare on hand. It ran fine for the first 10 mins, and then the monitor went into stand-by mode, and wont work again until the power supply has been disconnected for a number of hours. Then it will operate for approx 10 mins again before monitor goes to stand-bye mode. The system is a pcchips m810lr v7.1 motherboard with on-board graphics card AND AGP slot and AMD Duron 950Mhz processor with 400W powersupply. The problem occurs with both the on-board and AGP.
I have tried another m810lr v7.1a motherboard, another processor(AMD Duron 900Mhz), 3 different power supplies, 3 different monitors, both the on-board graphics card and AGP slot on BOTH motherboards (and two different AGP cards) 5 different HDD, 4 different CD/DVD-rom drives, 10 different IDE cables etc etc, AND tried them in every possible combination in 3 different ATX cases.
It is like the pc is still running(i can see HDD led light flashing occassionaly), but the monitor has just gone into suspend or stand-by mode.
I'm ready to pour petrol all over the lot of it and drop a match to it..
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

I should clarify and say that it wont work again until the power supply to the PC has been disconnected for a few hours, not the power to monitor.

Has there been any conflicts/problems made known when pairing the new Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB Video Card with the Gigabyte 8SQ800 motherboard? Or perhaps a specific Bios setting or Vid Card setting or driver that would need to be installed/set prior to using?

I go into a game and after 20 minutes or so of play, the PC either shuts down automatically and reboots and asks to "send error" or it will make a horrible sound through my headphones and then from the PC itsself and lock up (I then have to manually power down). I know that the Gigabyte boards recomments PC3200 DDR RAM, but I currently have 1 GIG of PC3700. Would this be an issue? I run the Pentium 3.06 Processor w/ Hyperthreading and have a 500 WATT power supply. Any help/advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

What error message do you get when the computer restarts?

For those who may not know, in order to see the error message when the computer re-starts, try this:

"To be able to see the blue screen stop message; Control
Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery, I usually like to uncheck
"Automatically reboot" this way you get a chance to read the stop error." mirse@aol.com

Its called W32.Blaster.Worm or A other version of the Blater WORM, it will shut down your comp for no reson ( ReBOOT )
Apply the fix and keep windows updated
it does'nt affect win 95 and 98 just above sys.

OH yeh and viruis protection wont pick it up, but Stiner might?? You have to get the update to keep from getting it, maybe MSN put it out so you have to update and that would kill the cracked copies that you cant update? But the update is suposed to stop you from getting it.

Does anyone know if the MSI KT3-Ultra (NOT ARU)will accept a Athlon XP processor above the 2600+ ? According to MSI's website it won't; however, I tend to doubt this as a fact because of past experiences. So, if anyone has heard of someone successfully doing this, please let me know.

Thanks,

Alan

Often it's the most obvious thing thats the problem

Example: Pc kept rebooting or would not boot up at all

made sure the video board connections were clean and noticed that the Hard drive - I have two AND 2 CD ROMS (1 Re-Write) have wide cables almost like parcel tape - I thought could that be obstructing the airflow?

so I taped them up out of the way with common or garden electrical tape ;)

WOrks PERFECT!!! NOW - it was the cables droping down and obstructing the airflow! I did use a Camera Lens Brush to scrub the fan Blades though - seems fine now ;)

;) =) =O

Hey Mantos. It is always hairy to change graphics cards. Usually, you need to fully uninstall the older card before you install the new one. The Windows registry is filled with graphics related entries, so changing cards means the registry may need a good cleaning, which is never easy... Have you tried uninstalling all nVidia software (drivers) from Control Panel before installing the FX 5200 ?

Mantos,

Mark is right, there can be lots of conflicts wth registry when changing graphics cards, usually removing the card AFTER changing the adapter to VGA does the trick, as when you then add the next card you are really at stage 1 as you will already be at VGA mode and then you just add the drivers again.

I would say don't use that supplier again! usually as good will the supplier will replace or refund as long as you have the receipt, but as you have already tried to instal the g.card then he is in his rights to refuse. I would suggest going to a reputable dealer or a site like ebuyer.co.uk i bought a graphics card from them, which worked for 3 months then failed (the client i bought it for installed lots more internal components and over heated the g.card - blew the dam thing!) I removed it and contacted ebuyer, and they just replaced the card free of change. I only had to pay for postage! good customer service if you ask me! dam good price for UK g.cards as well.

Hey MickeyB, thanks for stopping by. I have limited experience in this field, and am not quite sure what the best way is to revert back to VGA ; the only time I saw "default Windows VGA" was when I uninstalled my vid card driver once. Is there a simpler way ? Should Mantos completely uninstall his MX 440 software before trying anything else ? I'm sure any info on this will help many others out there... Thanks in advance.

Mark.

Computer reboots after 2 mins
Man I bought a new mobo and cpu in january I've had a problem with it ever since. It would reboot after i try reinstalling windows xp, then i was like oh the manual says 333mhz ram so i got and buy 256 DDr 2700 ram. same damn problem. My cpu is a AMD XP 2600 but when I set it on 2600 it reboots when i set it a 266 (2000 xp it shows up) it works fine. I noticed that the other versions of my motherboard had bios problems and they have fixed for em but not my motherboard POS. I have no clue whats wrong. My newly built computer (P4 2.8 256 Win2k) starts itself after it's been shutdown for 30 minutes.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance!

Your problem might be over heating problems p4 2.8 thats fast it needs to be cooled a lot. check your fan on your heat sink and make sure your have thermal paste on it.

location location on a simpler note may some of you have the cpu in a contained or too closed in of an area where the air circulated is warm raise it up off the floor and have it in wide open, my wifes 98 machine never froze after I put it ontop of the desk.

Message for Mark above, sorry mate, been very busy .. teething baby! you know how it is..

VGA!! hmm.. the best way is before you remove the card, goto display adaptors in control paned, click on adapter and click on change, then click on standard graphics, and choose VGA, this will then unbind the graphics drivers from the PCI card. Then on reboot, you hould find yourself on VGA!! let it log back in - big fonts! then shutdown, remove the card and put in the new one, pc chould autodetect the new card and then ask for drivers, put in driver cd, or if the same model card but highter spec... say upgrading a Gforce2 64m to a Gforce4 titanium 128 then the detenator drivers are all bundled together on the same drivers CD (but will stll be installed on your PC from the previous card) choose whatever drivers you want to use and install them.

Basically, you have to unbind the drivers from the PCI card before removing it.. then reboot in VGA, then shutdown and remove old card.. insert new card and reboot!! easy as...

Regards

MikeyB
