doc files corrupted

All of my documents are corrupted. Is there anyway to try to get them back? Running Windows 98 and documents are in Microsoft Word. At first they asked what program to use to open them and in ignorance I chose Notepad (since they have never asked that before--it was acting like they were zipped but they were not). If I need to buy a software to try, any ideas which one?

these files should be opened with microsoft word. Go to one of these docs and press the shift key at the same time as you right click it. "open wit' will now be an option choose it. scroll down the box and find word.exe or msword.exe whatever word calls itself check the box that sez always open with this and close. Now it should work. If it doesnt perhaps you chose the wrong exe so try again. perhaps word needs reinstallation.
