Every time I try to install something onto my computer i.e. a game or program(I have a Windows XP)I get this message that I need to turn something called an "unInstallShield" off. Now I used the search dog thing on my XP to try to "fetch" this program so I can shut the darned thing off, but alas it couldn't find it. And the program is not on my desktop, so there you go. Does anyne know where I can access this unInstallShield? It's not letting me install anything onto my computer(hence the name)and it's really ticking me off! If you could please help, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Is the program listed in C:\programs?

Can you disable/remove it in Add/remove programs in Control Panel?

We also have WinXP.Had for about 6 months. It is the Pro one. No problems. Pretty good. mirse@aol.com

I cannot find the unInstallShield program in the Control Panel or C Drive in Programs. There is no folder/icon for it, though whenever I install something is it clearly there. Is the folder name/icon not called unInstallSield by any chance? Is it called something different? Thanks in advance.

John W.: Go to search and type in "shield" to see if you can find what you are looking for. mirse@aol.com

I couldn't, I tried that. Ok, I just need to know, how do you turn off the unInstall Shield program? Otherwise I can't install anything onto my computer and that's really annoying.

Do you have administrator privileges? Can you install programs from safe mode?

Can you connect to google? Type in something like "uninstall shield problem".

I just did, and there seems to be many messages, web and groups, that talk about similar problems like yours. mirse@aol.com

John W: What we are trying to say is this: The Uninstall Shield is an important program in Windows.

My point: I believe that your original problem may have nothing to do with Uninstall Shield. The source of your problem probably lies somewhere else.

Again, I would go to a search engine like google to see if you can get help with your original problem. mirse@aol.com

John W: The following information is and example of the type of messages I ran across at google when I checked on Uninstall Shield problems:

Q: I am trying to install CADVANCE 2000 (or LiTe 2000 or an add-on program) from the Install Menu. I am getting the message "Uninstall Shield is in use, Close Uninstall Shield". Why is this?

A: CADVANCE 2000 uses the program InstallShield for installation. This is an InstallShield message, and is probably occurring because you have clicked twice on the program icon to start the installation."

Again, there were a lot of messages at google concerning problems with Uninstall Shield. I would check them out if I were you. mrse@aol.com

John W: This is a suggestion I found at google that you might want to try:

"Here is my generic InstallShield fix list.
1- empty TEMP folder
2- delete >Program Files >Common Files >InstallShield
directory
3- retart computer
4- retry the Install

Often times the software developers are using different
versions of InstallShield. Sometimes their leftover files
conflict when another setup invokes it". mirse@aol.com

andrew:
1. Administrator privileges: Make sure that you and your mother have these privileges when you try to install a program.

2. I found the following message and suggestions at google when I typed in "cannot close InstallShield".
Maybe something here can help you. You can also go to google and see if messages, groups and web, can help you when you type in "cannot close InstallShield."
Let us know what happens. mirse@aol.com

"For computers running Windows NT, 2000 and XP

You have insufficient permissions with your current Windows logon. You must have administrative permissions to run an InstallShield setup program. Check with your network administrator or Help Desk if you need to change your permissions.

If another InstallShield setup just finished, the engine (IKERNEL.EXE) stays in memory for a few seconds at the end of an install. Wait a few seconds and try again.

Use Ctrl/Alt/Del, click Task Manager, then the Processes tab. Look for IKERNEL.EXE. If no setup program is currently running, highlight IKERNEL.EXE and click End Task. Try the setup again.

Use Windows Explorer, and remove all files from the C:\Temp, C:\windows\Temp or C:\WINNT\Temp folder.

Use Windows Explorer and open Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield. Remove the Engine folder and then rerun the setup.

Core Windows files may be missing or corrupted. Reinstall the latest Internet Explorer and the latest Service Paks.

Core Windows file STDOLE.TLB is missing. Copy this file from another computer running the same version of Windows."

andrew: I ran across this information about InstallShield while searching google.

It seems tha InstallShield has its own website. You may want to check it out. mirse@aol.com

andrew, I'm no expert on winXP. Have you tried google by typing something like "Forgot Administrator password in winxp."
Could you give us some more details, because I had trouble understanding your explanation above.
For instance, do you yourself have adminstrator privileges?

Are you saying that you went into safe mode and tried to change password of the Administrator in safe mode, but you forgot the password that is needed in safe mode? mirse@aol.com

I have the same problem.

But, now. I went to my windows folder, and I deleted IsUninst.exe.

It works now.

So, if you want to take the risk, delete your IsUninst.exe file in the c:/windows directory

also..i have a quick question

How come I cant install some programs , even though my account is that of an admin? I get an error saying that I cannot install the program without administrative privileges. But I'm the administrator! What gives?

isuninst stands for Install Sheild Uninstall. If a program is installed using install sheild isuninst is what is used to uninstall it again.

e.g. Uninstall Acrobat 5

ISUNINST.EXE -y -f"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\NT\Uninst.isu" -c"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\NT\Uninst.dll"

i.e. it may be related to the install sheild problem.. But hey, simple solution if you think deleting isuninstall is dangerous (and it is since install sheild will no longer be able to uninstall programs). Just try renaming it or moving it instead of the brutal choice of deleting it. Then see if your problem is solved.
Once again, you need to be admin.

As for changing a lost Admin password on your machine check out the Offline NT password editor at http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

This could be happening if IsUninst.exe is corrupted on a particular machine. IsUninst.exe is the InstallShield uninstallation file, and when it's corrupted it might appear to be in use even though it's not showing up as a process that is running in Task Manager.

Resolution: Delete all instances of IsUninst.exe from the Windows directory and try running your setup again. If IsUnist.exe can't be deleted because it's in use, please try to reboot the machine and run the setup again.
